The best place I know is retromac68k, a hotline server. You'll need a
hotline client, and they have the CD images available for
download(about 200MB total IIRC). The address is
retromac68k.dyndns.org

the main problem with a/ux is that it is no longer patched. when you run a unix
machine connected to a network you need to be current. you can maybemake it current
with pkgsrc. netbsd or debian or openbsd are the only alternatives. however openbsd
does not like to compile itself so that is out.

nix box is a reference to a Unix or linux computer. The way X-windows is set
up, you can run programs on one machine and have them display on another
computer's monitor. This can be done in a completely cross-platform manner,
so that as long as whatever machine you're displaying on can run some sort of
X-window environment you can display the output from whatever type of machine
you like. Exodus is one of those programs which will display X-windows on
macintosh OS. I haven't used it in probably 8 years but it was good then so
I'm sure it's great now.

hope this helps.
Helped me, thanks. :)
Apple are not the most open of companies so alot of what works under
nix is not always the best way to go about about things and has been
reached through trial and error. The way xfree works is an example, it
works but not as fast as the finder under the MacOS, add that to a
virtual memory mess with less than wonderful drive access, then start
opening programs. Easier if you dont place the strain on the 68k and
stick with cli.

Always better to try it yourself and I'm told netbsd has improved its
disc access and virtual memory, I havent tried it lately.

If you already have a nix box of some sort you could try a vnc client
on the mac or Exodus which is rather excellent, even better if you
know how to configure your firewall properly. :)
When configured you can run nix programs at good speed on your quadra
which is fun. Win4Lin runs well in a window, sometime I'll try
Sheepshaver, OS9 on a unaccellerated quad, in a window. :)

Need to parse this and make it intelligible for a wanderer in the wilderness
like me.
So, please define the terms you use, like nix box and so on.
Hi Dwight.
CLI is Command Line Interface or lots of dos like typing to do things
rather than a GUI or Graphical User Interface, like the MacOS.
The advantage here is speed, CLI is much faster on a 68k mac than a
nix GUI.

KDE is a bloated Desktop Manager, a desktop manager being the program
that provides the GUI, on a mac this would be the finder, on windows
it would be explorer (?).
I say KDE is bloated, under NIX you have the choice of many DM's all
are lighter than KDE and so provide less function, you can install
parts of KDE making the install much smaller.

NIX box is a computer running linux or unix or a mix of both, I try
not to favor either linux (debian) or unix (netbsd) on a mac list so
NIX is what I call both flavors.

You can install different servers on a nix box, by using a client
program on another machine you can view/use the desktop of the the nix
box with the monitor, keyboard and mouse on the client machine.

If you had a nix server that was much faster than the mac client you
could connect to the server and make use of the nix programs at good
speed without installing any more than the client program under the
MacOS. This is limited to the speed of the conection between the
server and client computers, the standard inbuilt 10T is slower than a
10/100 connection but much faster than loading nix on a q700.

A VNC client or Exodus provide a client on the MacOS which you use to
connect to the nix server.

Win4Lin is an excellent windows emulator for i386 flavors of linux in
the same way Mac on Linux (forgot the name, sorry) will only work on
ppc flavors of linux.

SheepShaver is a MacOS 7.5 - 9.0 emulator that you can compile for
most flavors of nix (but not win32 (windows) yet).

Both of these programs can be served from a linux server and can run
in a window on the quadra.

Clear as mud now? ;)
A q900 is not the best machine to make a nix desktop out of. If you
have a use for a server then a flavor of nix may do the job for you.
If you would like to use a desktop at good speed with good function,
stick to the MacOS. :)

LEM has a MaX list where you will find other folks who both use 68k
macs and can help you to get started if you really want to try nix on
a mac. Its a quiet list unless some asks a question.

A tip, find a second drive of say 2 gig or more to install nix onto,
the standard drives in 68k macs are slow. This will make life easier
than trying to partition the drive you have now.

Re: [q] translation needed

I guess to tie it all together I should mention for the uninitiated that it
takes a lot more processor and memory to run graphics quickly which is why
the machine is mentioned as being mostly only good for CLI. Of course if the
program is being executed remotely and only displayed locally, as is possible
with X-windows, less resources are being used locally and thus you would see
a speed increase if you are using the machine for display only and not
program execution.

Cheers,

Stephen
