Perl was built from the ground up as a text-handling language and from what little experience I have with it (writing the serial number decoder for the early Macs for the FAQ), I'd say it's *perfect* for what you want to do. Perl is perfect for most things. After all, it is the Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister. :-) Jeff Walther -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I have never used it and would like to know some details about how it works. BIG SNIP -- You ask a lot of detailed questions and the short answer is Applescript may be able to do what you want. However, Applescript is a programming language, so that is like saying Basic may be able to do what you want. It depends on a couple of things. First, the scriptability of the application in which you are trying to accomplish the task. Mac applications have certain functions built in that may be accessible via Applescript. Some are very rudementary (open, close, print) and others are extensive, allowing you to do almost anything you are clever enough to develop. What you are asking for is essentially a text (or string) manipulation. Most text processors will have this capability via Applescript. I found that the best way to understand the basics of Applescript is to pick apart scripts built by others and figure out ways to change their behavior. The same way I learned the basics of Basic (?? redundant) with my first Apple ][. In short, if you can do some programming, you can probably do Applescript. It has some peculiar syntax, but what programming language doesn't? Learning keeps the grey matter from turning to stone! guide to AppleScript?
Something about Mac OS 7.6 that I haven't seen mentioned on the lists: there is a control panel (can't remember the name) whereby you can set times for your Mac to boot itself up and switch itself off (either one-off or recurring). I don't know how modern the Mac needs to be for it to work... It doesn't seem to be installed by default, at least it wasn't on my Performa 630 (and I'm pretty sure I did a 'full' install of 7.6). Nevertheless, once installed, you can set the Performa to boot itself up, and later switch itself off, at predetermined times... cool! I found this CP buried away in the 7.6 install disk images, while browsing them with TomeViewer (I was hunting for the Infra Red control panels/extensions /whatever, which also weren't installed by default on the Performa 630, even though they appear to be necessary for this particular machine to use IR). I no longer have the Performa (now my parents main puter -- several 100 miles away), so apologies that I can't remember what the control panel's called. But no doubt other people on the list can help there. Which comes to my problem. If I could master AppleScript, I could schedule my parents' Mac to do a great many boring things in the middle of the night (rebuild desktops, defragment hard disk partitions, virus-check partitions, download email, make backups of all disks, etc.)... But is there a downloadable guide to writing Applescript somewhere, on the Apple website or elsewhere? Where is there some documentation on it, for the average user?
