Clean up the mobo first; something might have been shorting out a power line
and overloading the PSU.

If that doesn't stop the fuse-blowing, there's probably a short in the PSU
somewhere, and quite honestly, the best fix would be to replace the PSU.

Popking aound I note the psu is rated at 1.5a not 3 (on 200-240v), I'd
usually assume this means i should use a 1.5a fuse for protection but these
are not common, all computer stuff uses 3a or 5a fuses.

Any idea what could case this and what i should do.

Probably a failure in the primary side of the power supply, also known as the
converter section.

The most frequent cause of this type is failure of the bridge rectifier (if
self-contained) or one of the four diodes (if not self-contained).

This causes a short circuit, which blows the fuse in order to protect the
power supply from additional failures.

As most individuals don't have the specialized equipment, knowledge or skills
to perform component-level repairs on power supplies (these contain lethal
voltages, BTW), it is probably best to buy a replacement power supply and to
discard the failed one.

C650 Blows fuse!

2002-08-13 Thread Kyle Kinsey

Hi all,

Just been fiddling with my macs again and I was booting them to check they still
worked,
came accross one of my c650's and it just turned off and further investigation notes
that
it blew the 3A fuse in the power cable! also the psu smells of burn a bit!
Popking aound I note the psu is rated at 1.5a not 3 (on 200-240v), I'd usually assume
this means i should use a 1.5a fuse for protection but these are not common, all
computer stuff uses 3a or 5a fuses.

Any idea what could case this and what i should do.
I'll admit that this c650 really has a mucky motherboard, sort of gunk and nasty stuff,
though I can't see any reason this would cause this!

Hope this makes sense and does not babble to much ;-)

Kyle.
