Re: Can a Performa 475 drive an AppleColor Monitor?

2002-10-25 Thread doctor
The answer is yes a 475 can drive an AppleColor Monitor, but you might not
like the result.

The IIgs has an RGB port which is similar to the 15 pin mac port. I think
it might even be as far as pin compatible, but I'm not completely sure
about that.

The IIgs monitor used RGB with a refresh rate of about 15.75khz. This is
the same rate that standard NTSC televisions use.

To mate that monitor to your 475 you would have to build or aquire the
cable to get the pins matching up, then you would need to short certain
pins together on the 475 monitor port so that the 475 would output in NTSC
mode. This is a valid output mode on the 475.

The resulting video would likely be 512x384 interlaced with a refresh of
15.75khz.

Here's some info for further study:

Here's the pinouts for the monitor:

Re: Can a Performa 475 drive an AppleColor Monitor?

2002-10-24 Thread Scott Holder
It is a DB-15. "Db-15" is the name of the physical connector itself. It
doesn't say anything about what's going through it. I could wire up some
DB-15s to my car's spark plugs and it would probably work - But I'm not
going to be able to control my car from a PC Joystick just because it
fits.

It's one of those annoying things of the computer world :) Trying to
figure out whether a term refers to the hardware, the software, or the
protocol :)

As I was forcefully informed, it's not a DB-15. ;-)

The IIgs provides both composite video through an RCA socket and some
sort of RGB monitor support through the DB-15 (sic) socket.

As my original post said, I was trying to find out if the AppleColor RGB
Monitor from a IIgs could be driven from an LC475/P475/Q605 mobo.

It's definitely a DB-15. It just isn't a DB-15 that carries Mac video signals.
DB-15 is the name of the connector. The signals can be anything you want ;)

Re: Can a Performa 475 drive an AppleColor Monitor?

2002-10-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
>From the www.apple2.org FAQ:

"4.8 Can I use my GS Monitor on a Mac or PC?

A: As stated above in using other monitors on the GS, the GS monitor
expects a 15Khz horizontal refresh signal. In addition, the monitor
itself has an 0.37" dot pitch, which as far as modern monitors go,
that is atrocious. It'd be best to get a monitor designed for other
systems on them.

If trying to connect to a Macintosh, only the original Mac Nubus 8-bit
(256-color) video card is known to work with the GS's monitor. Once
connected, you'll be able to do 640x480 in interlaced mode.
[Interlaced mode is flickery to many people, and a very subpar video
mode]"

I've used AppleColor Monitors from the schools old Apple IIgs collection
with both Apple IIgs-es as well as the odd Performa, LC, and even a couple
of old power macs. Don't have the model numbers handy, but they worked.

But about half of them are busted 'cuz they're so old.

Re: Can a Performa 475 drive an AppleColor Monitor?

2002-10-20 Thread Spiritus ex Machina
Thanks, pickle. I was afraid that was the case. I picked up an Apple IIgs
with monitor, keyboard, mouse, 3,5 and 5.25 external drives, and 3 ft**3 of
game software on floppies at a yard sale. Also salvaged a Performa 475
eleswhere. I sort of like the look of the IIgs, so I thought I'd try a hack
to put the 475 mobo in the IIgs case - plenty of room, IIgs power supply is
beefier than P475, and P475 case can provide back-panel insert. Of course
the AppleColor monitor is need to maintain the "look". Oh well ...

Anyone out there interested in a LOT of really low-density 3.5 & 5.25
floppies? :-(
