Some 25 MHz CPUs work OK at 40 MHz, but a lot don't. Even a few 33 MHz CPUs
won't overclock to 40 MHz well. You can try it, and if it doesn't work, you
know that you need to track down a faster CPU.

Thanks. I can understand that. I wonder if the number XC68040RC25B states
that it is supposed to run at 25Mhz or if the 25 in the number on the CPU is
just a coinsidence?

It does mean it's rated at 25mhz.

The way I understand processor fabbing to go, a chip maker makes up a batch
of chips, then runs them through various tests. The ones that work at lower
speeds get rated lower, the ones that stay in spec at higher speeds get
marked higher. This means that a chip marked for a lower speed might well
run fine for general use at higher speeds, and is the basis for the entire
overclocking bit.

That said, if you're going to run a 25mhz part at 40, you definitely want
at least a heat sync, and maybe even a fan.

Thanx alot!

I have a heath sink from the donor machine a Quadra 700 i believe. But no
extra fan. So what happens if it gets to warm? Does it hang the machine or
what are the signs? It runs now at 33Mhz and there is no problems as far as
I can see.

The heatsink from a Q700 will be quite sufficient; CPUs overclocked to speeds
shipped by Apple (i.e., anything from 40 MHz on down) shouldn't need anything
more than the heatsink unless airflow around the CPU is very tight.

Re: Overclocking

2003-03-08 Thread Dirk Kautz
OK, I have 3 '040 machines that I'm considering upgrading to full '040
instead of LC processors. First off I have an LC630 with a 33MHz chip
in, and I've tracked down a full 33MHz processor to drop in as a
straight replacement.

I've also got a couple of Performa 475s, and unfortunately I have only
seen other 33MHz chips (none purchased yet). Would I be right in
assuming that if I drop in one of these, I'd have to go through the
overclocking procedure for the motherboard.

Seems to make logical sense to me, but just in case I thought I'd ask
:-) I'm not to sure about over clocking the 475 really, but that's yet
to be decided.

No, the 33 MHz chips will work fine at the original 25 MHz of the '475.

Overclocking the 475 isn't too difficult though.
See http://homepage.mac.com/schrier/q605.html for a description.

Cheers,

Dirk

You don't *have* to - the chips will run fine at the slower speed - but to take
full advantage of them, you'll probably want to.

No. That's a bit of marketing bullshxt that Apple's ad agency came up with.

Nevertheless, where can I find instructions on how to overclock this model
specifically? I've found some information on slower Quadras, but can't find
anything on the Quadra 800.

And pickle, I have already read your very informative page on this topic.

It's there. Have a read through it again :)
