This is a known quirk with 605s and 7.5.5. For some
reason remnants of the installer tome are left on the
startup drive. They are invisible but . . .
OK, I'm kidding. What's virtual memory set at?

Another reason I like RAM Doubler better than Apple's VM, (warning: OT note
ahead) though performance-wise, they're a wash after OS 8.1.

That's quite possible, especially if it's a 160MB hard disk :)

Go through the System Folder and start trimming. Any PowerBook stuff can
go. Any control panels that, when opened, give the "This control panel
cannot be used with this Macintosh" error can go. A lot of the Apple
Extras stuff can go. Rebuilding your desktop will probably reclaim several
megs unless you reformatted right before the installation.

And last, you might want to run the entire pile of code through a PPC code
stripper to remove all the extraneous PPC code, which will save another
10-40% in many cases.

How much virtual memory are you using?

This uses disk space just like any other file... and is quite invisible...

System 7.5.5

2002-07-09 Thread catalina_eddie

Hi Group,

I've just completed a "clean install" of OS 7.5.5 on my Q 605 and my HD
window says there are 99.x megs on disk and 55.x mags remaining. Is this
possible or has MS "acquired" Apple? I can't find any individual files that
seem to be taking up much space. My trash is emptied. I threw away my old
system. Any ideas what is going on?

If this is for real, what files can I throw away safely? I only have a 160M
HD, (for the time being) and about 30 megs of apps yet to install.
