For most Macs, this is true.

True for desktop Macs.

This is necessary for the power-on key to work.

2002-07-27 Thread catalina_eddie

Hi Steven,

I just recently read in the Mac Bible that the power switch is never totally
OFF. There is a trickle charge that keeps the PRAM battery charged up. If
you don't keep power to the back of the mac it can let your battery run
down. Does anybody know anythinng about this?

Boy, this sounds familiar! :>

I got a Q900 last weekend. What position is the keylock in? If it is in
the off ("O") position, it will not power up. If you have a key for the
lock, change it to the on ("1" or "I") position. The only way it will power
up by keyboard alone is if the keylock is disconnected from the logic board.
I found this out because I don't have a key for mine.

3.68 volts is normal for a brand-new battery.

They will usually work until a little above 3 volts.

2.4 volts seems too low.

That's about 1.2V too low - dead, IOW - and should be replaced. But it's
probably not why your Mac won't work.

Try that. More than likely it's somewhat unseated.

2002-07-27 Thread steven l

hi quadlist, I've been subscribed for a fortnight or so, prior to this I
was once subscribed to an 8500list. Suprisingly enough the quadlist has
more activity then when i was reading the 8500.

Am an Australian macuser, and seek help with a q900,

i unplugged it, let it sit there unplugged for about 3weeks, moved it to
another room...an now no powerup.
I've tried many various power leads, 3 keyboards, tested the p/s fuse,
jiggled the leads for the keyswitch to board and the p/s to the board,
the batt reads 2.4ish volts (fine i think?)

i haven't tried to boot up with the ppc card removed yet. ??

I think that the machine should powerup from keyboard alone. ie. no hds,
monitor, periphs, or ram even. is this correct?

hope someone can help
thanks quadders, from steven.
