advance master if there's no bad breakage.
There is at least one issue left - the final commit fails on the DejaGNU
unit tests

I’ve started (yet again), going through all the commits one by one…
It will take some time. (Expect approx 1 commit per 15 min in best case)
Once the basic checks pass, then I can try to run a full test suite…
