[Quantum Owners] Re: Xtreme resale values

2011-03-25 Thread Doug
Thanks for the replies. That other Xtreme will certainly be a bargain
for someone. I just hope it doesn't set a precident for future Xtreme
values.

Corrado wise it would have to be low mileage late model (preferably
below 100k), and be in top condition with the leather interior, and
with few mods to the standard spec. I'm keeping my eyes peeled... but
I'd have to sell the Xtreme first! I'd consider a G60 or 2.0ltr 16v
as well, but the condition would have to be mint. The only other 4
seat alternative I'm looking at would be a Porsche 944 - S2s are
similar money to Corrados, and that has 4 seats too, plus cheap
classic car insurance!

If I do sell I'm worried in a few years I'll regret it. But if the
kids are interested in Kit Cars then we'll build one together.

Oh, but it does look so nice on my driveway, and it turns heads (and
ears) like nothing else. Such a shame it only gets a Stoneleigh run
and a bi-weekly evening run in the summer. Just can't decide. I
guess I'll advertise it at £7k and see if anyone is interested at
that. If not then I'll keep it. Probably

Re: [Quantum Owners] CVH Turbo died

2011-03-25 Thread Jim Hearne
Glad it's fixed.
I presume you are talking about the hard plastic pipes about 14mm dia on the
warm up valve, these should have a rubber insert in the ends to make them a
tight fit on the valve.
They don't normally have any hose clips.
If it's loose then probably the rubber insert is missing or perished.

Wahey the Quant lives again! Jim I owe you a beer!
The cold start unit was the culprit because the pipe going to it appeared to
be complete with no splits but the jubilee was old and useless and the pipe
slid on and off as it pleased.
The car now has a nice regular tickover as it should.
I am a fool for not finding this earlier.
However the cambelt was loose and I have renewed many hose clips etc so the
car is better for its fault.
Now I can get on with building my special, oh and getting an MOT on my MX 5
and putting the engine back in my Sprint, I think I must live in my garage.
  Cheers Jon

Hmm, thinking back to when my 2+2 had this engine.
Try unplugging the cold start injector, mine never liked running with it
connected and there could be a fault with the thermo time switch meaning it's
on all the time instead of just a few seconds at start up.
Do the plugs look wet / smell of fuel ?

You can take all the injectors out of the manifold and point them into some
little jars (4 baby food jars taped to a piece of wood works well.
Then crank the engine over.
If you get nothing then manually move the flap in the air flow meter and
see if you do then.

If you disconnect the fuel return pipe and crank the engine do you get any
fuel out of that ?

Oh dear I am no nearer finding this fault than a week and a half ago. I
have good spark and plenty of fuel at high pressure so either a weak spark
under load (but that would start but break down).
The cambelt is fine and timed up correctly as are plug leads and cap.
It must be the fuel distributer so my next step is to see if the
injectors are spraying some.
I will check all hoses yet again.
I will change the coil too just in case. ( I do have a big spark though)
When I try to start it it will just catch the once and no more.
  Any more ideas gents?

I'm assuming this is the Escort KE injection engine as you mention the
pink relay.
The fuel pump relay on this system does have a engine speed input but
it's only supposed to be so that the fuel pump stops if the engine stops running
When you crank the engine do you hear the fuel pump still running ?
If the relay had died completely you wouldn't have the engine running
at all.
If you look at a wiring diagram you can link out the relay to prove
it's not that.

Have you checked all the intake hoses, if one has come off then the air
wouldn't be going through the air flow meter and it would supply very little
fuel.

Another fault could be the centre contact on the distributor cap, this
can break off and then the spark only manages to jump the gap at higher engine
speeds.

It's when the engine is decelerating that the cam belt can break or
jump teeth (if it's too loose), my Mondeo failed under braking a few months ago
though on that it was the tensioner pulley that went.
Bent all the valves on the head :-(

It will not tick over or run below about 1500 rpm, much as if it had
an inlet air leak but I have sealed the servo etc to check.
I suspect the big pink fuel pump relay, any other ideas guys?
When you try to start it it runs a couple of revolutions and stops.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Xtreme resale values

2011-03-25 Thread Sean
2nd hand values are always difficult to judge. When i made a half
hearted effort in selling mine last year, I had 1 inquiry but no
follow up.

I do hope that the Xtreme on pistonheads sells quickly, so the value
of Xtremes isn't set by this. I think your expectations on value are
about right, however there are some good bargains of other marques out
there. I couldn't sell my Xtreme for the price of the one on
Pistonheads, it's worth more to me than that.

I may readvertise mine in the not too distant future and see what
happens. However, I would need something else to fuel my petrol head
pashion (or pay a chunk of the mortgage off, but that'd be far too
sensible ;-))

Good luck with the sale.

[Quantum Owners] Zetec inlet manifolds.

2011-03-25 Thread Jim Hearne
Found this interesting comparison of silver top zetec inlet manifolds.

http://fiestaguides.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6290sid=d66b19fe58b2a685acc7cc1220f7f899

Useful if you are putting a 2.0 Mondeo engine into a 2+2 or saloon.

Though i'm sure the manifold i took off a late Mk3 Fiesta 1.6 Zetec engine was
the larger size but maybe they had standardised the parts by then.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Xtreme resale values

2011-03-25 Thread Doug
Just got an insurance quote...

Through FJ on the Corrado VR6 it's not as bad as I thought... for a 38
year old with no points, convictions or claims in the last 5 years,
with Classic Car insurance and a 10% discount for being a Quantum Car
Club member (cheeky) it's £213 if garaged overnight (£242 if on the
driveway) and with a 1500mile limit. Not much worse than the Xtreme,
but likely to be much more expensive to run with servicing and parts.

Confused.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Footman James Insurance Increase

2011-03-25 Thread Dave English
Hi All

Phoned FJ today and the 'helpful' voice at the other end said that the
amount was correct, it had gone up over the year. I did mention that 3
weeks ago a club member had paid £185, so it must have gone up 13% in
3 weeks, but it didn't help.
She did offer to put me through to renewals if I had another quote and
they would 'see what they could do'.
Mentioning that it was supposed to be a fixed rate for QOC club
members had no effect (apart from another offer to put me through to
renewals if I had another quote) so I gave up.
I'll try sending an e-mail, that may get to someone who isn't reading
a script, but my next job is to phone around for some other quotes.

Andy Heaton, if you see this, it may be worth getting in touch with FJ
and finding out what the current prices are. If £202.46 is correct and
in among the lowest quotes, I'll stay with it.

Dave
