Re: [Quantum Owners] Breaking 2+2 - update

2015-06-28 Thread Susan and Martin Scott
Eddie will surely know more, but as I understand it the coremat soaks up
resin and it's purpose is to add 'bulk' to the laminate, in as much that it
makes it stiffer by making it thicker. It has the other advantage of being
quicker to lay up, however although it gives stiffness to the laminate is
isn't as strong as an equivalent thickness laminate made using chopped
strand or woven mat or a combination of them.

Quantum used quite a lot of a something that i think was called core mat
in the 2+2
This is a sort of foam material, about 5mm thick and i don't think the
resin is intended to soak into it.
They lay down quite a few layers of matting, then the core mat and then
more layers of matting.
I believe the composite of the 2 separate layers of matting and the core
matt is stronger than the same amount of matting alone.
And the core matt is very light so it doesn't add significantly to the
weight.

Eddie will be able to confirm I'm sure.

While removing the rear suspension today (the car will be scrapped on
Monday) I discovered that the fibreglass was seriously internally
delaminated around the rear suspension pickup points. Where it should have
been a solid mass of fibreglass and resin, while the interior of the layup
and the gelcoat were both apparently fine, the interior layers - about
five

millimetres thickness - was dry and loose, as if it had never been exposed
to resin.

Not a good condition, and obviously if one part of the tub has that issue,
it's reasonable to expect that other parts of the tub would also suffer
from it. The strength of the tub is obviously badly affected by this -
though I'm not in a position to quantify this - and worst of all, there is
no immediately visible cue that this situation exists. I'm not even sure
how you would test for it - ultrasonic examination, perhaps?

It does convince me that scrapping this tub - number 359 - was the right
thing to to.

On a more cheerful note,Dean collected a quantity of parts today - thanks
Dean - and I'm happy that at least some of the car is going to get another
quantum on the road!

I have salvaged the windscreen and rubber - can anyone confirm that this
is

a Fiesta Mk2 part?

Hi Robert,
Most insurance companies, yes, but not General accident.
They won't even speak to you on the phone, all communication has to be
via email, though admittedly they did reply to those pretty quickly.
In the end i just transferred the policy onto the new car and sorned the
Fiesta.
Luckily the electrical fault it was sold with seems to have disappeared

Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 419 lives!

2015-06-28 Thread Mark
Good stuff on the restart Mark. Get it out this summer & enjoy the excellent
roads round your neck of the woods. I intend to do so, may take a ride out to
your spot from York. The major upgrade can start in the winter.

Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 419 lives!

2015-06-28 Thread 'Mark Miles' via Quantum Owners Group
The fact it started has put me i a bit of dilemma though. As i discussed with
Eddie,  I thought the car was gong to be a non runner so had put some quite
extreme powerplant plans in place for it. Now I think that I just want to get
it back on the road as soon as possible  instead hmm, more power or drive
it sooner.

Really sorry to read all of that Mark. However, moving on, its great to see
that the Car has started again for you and that Steve was able to play a great
part in returning the car to you. Lets hope that now, the enjoyment of the club
and some of those great roads up north are really good fun and that this
nightmare is finally put behind you.
Welcome back to you and your car.
