[Quantum Owners] Re: Electrics Failure

2019-08-08 Thread Dave English
Hi Phil

Sounds connected with all your 'ignition on' electrics going at once. It's
always worth checking Earths, but may also be worth looking at your fusebox
around Fuse number 8.
I've had corrosion / overheating damage create an intermittent connection
to a fuse before.
If this is the case, after a little wiring diagram studying, the feed to
the fusebox from your ignition switch could be disconnecting from the fuse
and the take off for the ignition relay. This would knock out all your
'ignition on' electrics except for the engine ignition and maybe the wipers
which are both fed directly from the ignition switch.
You may need to drop the fusebox out to look at the back of it.
Hope this is of use

Regards
Dave English

Re: [Quantum Owners] Electrics Failure

2019-08-08 Thread chris.quant via Quantum Owners Group
On the saloon there is a mass (lots of wires) earth connection on the A pillar
next to the fuse box. If that gets loose it could explain your problems.

Also check the earth wires at the battery.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Electrics Failure

Hi,

I have a 2+2 and on Monday after driving for 50-60 miles I noticed that the
indicators had suddenly stopped working.

I had actually just joined the A1(M) so over the next few miles a check
revealed that the only thing still working was the engine. No indicators,
radio, heater fan, electric windows, fuel gauge - the list goes on. I left the
A1(M) and pulled into a layby.

I pulled the bonnet release, got out of the car, went to the nearside to open
the bonnet and my wife then said that the radio had started working.
(Unfortunately I didn't have time to check the lights)

A further check revealed that everything else was back on line.

I did wonder whether the action of opening the door or using the boot release
may have re-disturbed the wiring to make everything work again but when I got
home and tried to move the wiring, where possible, everything kept on working.

I am now assuming that with everything failing that this is not a relay/fuse
issue and it is a (major) intermittent earthing fault.

However before starting a major hunt which will probably involve removing the
dashboard I was looking for any suggestions, recommendations, advice as to
whether my diagnosis is correct or whether it could be some simple fix!

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Thanks

Phil Holden

Re: [Quantum Owners] Electrics Failure

2019-08-08 Thread Jim Hearne
There is a relay that switches the ignition power for almost everything
ignition powered, except for the engine.

The engine is feed directly from the ignition switch.
This relay quite often overheats it's terminals in the fusebox.

I forget exactly which one it is but if you pull them out one at time
you should see the discoloured pins and possibly melted plastic.

P.S , I did send this several days ago but just to Bernie by mistake.

A quick check will confirm that it's a disconnected earth - connect a wire from
battery -ve (at the battery itself) to the earthy side of any non-working item.
If the problem is a bad earth the item will spring into life.

Best regards

[Quantum Owners] Xtreme Vs other 7 type cars.

2019-08-08 Thread Mark Olsen
Evening all
I bought my Xtreme earlier this year as I like the looks and also the
monocoque design. So far I've got no real complaints with the car other
than a few issues with the Pinto engine I'm slowly sorting, although I'm
planning to replace it for something more modern anyway (probably an st170
engine).

However I've got a friend who's a complete Caterham fan boy (but doesn't
own one) who keeps going on at me that my car is a pile of scrap and is
basically a Robin Hood and I need to sell it. I know I should just ignore
him, but it's really starting to annoy me now and I would like to shut him
up, with some technical comparisons, or with a magazine review, but there
doesn't seem to be much online about the Xtreme. The best I've found so
far is a bit of a review of the prototype car by Richard Hammond on Kits
and Crusing from back in the day.

I'm sure the view here might a little bit biassed but what is the general
view of how the Xtreme stacks up against other 7 style cars e.g.
Westfield's, Caterhams, Tigers, GBS etc? Or has anyone got some copies of
old reviews they could share with me where a comparison has been made?

Cheers
Mark

Hi mark
Well it is fairly obvious your mate knows absolutely nothing if he is
comparing the xtreme monocoque with a robin hood some torsional stiffnes
figures for the chassis here for you.
Westfield/ tiger etc around 12/1300 nm per degree
Caterham 400r 2800nm per degree
Quantum xtreme over 4000nm per degree. Added to the fact that after ten
years plus the xtreme chassis still looks like new.
Just ignore him and enjoy your car!!

I don't have it now, but I bought the v8 xtreme off Chris F, I converted
it to motorbike throttle bodies and megasquirt. everyone was amazed as to
how little monocoque roll there was, even with the v8 trying to twist it
over.

I also built a new series 3 robin hood, which was also a monocoque, but my
gosh it was in comparison a pile of rubbish! You couldn't firm up the
suspension for fear of the car cracking up! I managed to loose it trying
to avoid a big pot hole coming off a round about and wrote it off.. But in
realty I was glad as a picked up an Xtreme next!.( a pinto one )

Great plus points for me, slightly bigger car so my legs could fit! has a
boot, can use it all year round and with the hood on, (I'd use mine come
rains, shine, snow) - stainless - no rust to worry about. A friend has a
tiger Avon - have to keep an eye on the chassis as well as just the
suspension bits. There may be an argument that some of the others are
lighter and more nimble, but all in unless you are on a track who cares.

Enjoy your car, your mate is just jealous!
Remember that the exhaust changes side from a pinto to zetec.. you might
want to go to a duratec (not sure what there cost is like these days) i
believe the manuals are up on the club website.

Have fun with it.

may be an argument that some of the others are lighter and more nimble, but all
in unless you are on a track who cares.
Enjoy your car, your mate is just jealous! Remember that the exhaust changes
side from a pinto to zetec.. you might want to go to a duratec (not sure what
there cost is like these days)  i believe the manuals are up on the club
website.
Have fun with it.

Hi markWell it is fairly obvious your mate knows absolutely nothing if he is

per degreeCaterham 400r 2800nm per degreeQuantum xtreme over 4000nm per degree.
Added to the fact that after ten years plus the xtreme chassis still looks like
new. Just ignore him and enjoy your car!!

Evening allI bought my Xtreme earlier this year as I like the looks and also
the monocoque design. So far I've got no real complaints with the car other
than a few issues with the Pinto engine I'm slowly sorting, although I'm
planning to replace it for something more modern anyway (probably an st170
engine).
However I've got a friend who's a complete Caterham fan boy (but doesn't own
one) who keeps going on at me that my car is a pile of scrap and is basically a
Robin Hood and I need to sell it.  I know I should just ignore him, but it's
really starting to annoy me now and I would like to shut him up, with some
technical comparisons, or with a magazine review,  but there doesn't seem to be
much online about the Xtreme.  The best I've found so far is a bit of a review
of the prototype car by Richard Hammond on Kits and Crusing from back in the
day.
I'm sure the view here might a little bit biassed but what is the general view
of how the Xtreme stacks up against other 7 style cars e.g. Westfield's,
Caterhams, Tigers, GBS etc?  Or has anyone got some copies of old reviews they
could share with me where a comparison has been made?
CheersMark
