[Quantum Owners] Re: new saloon owner asking for advice

2010-08-14 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
I agree with not using the gunge in a can.

i have a 15" steel focus space saver(T125/80 tyre size) wheel as a
spare in the coupe and it fits in the original space behind the back
seat.for the 2+2 i have a focus rs space saver alloy (16") with a
T115/70 tyre from a lancia hf turbo fitted , although i have larger
than std wheels/tyres(205/40/16 ) on the 2+2.

i have checked with the seller , he confirms that it is 1.4 and the

is this a blacktop or is it one of the alloy yam engines (they did the

anyone shed any light or thoughts on this?

Yeh the 105 made me think 105ps or maybe 105k mileage!

i suspected that it was a bit of a boo but thought i would check with
you guys ,i don't suppose that the capacity is marked clearly on the
block or head somewhere easily accessable is it to verify further?

Still is that not too bad a value for a 1.8blacktop? he wants 100 for
the autobox on top if thats required too which again isn't that bad
either.

just a last thought ,ford didn't ever make mention of any prototype
1.4 in the blacktop did they ? i know that the silvertops nearly had a
1.4 version in the very beginning i am sure ford must have made some
protos of them?

If the club got it's hands on the brand then maybe it could let
approved persons/companies create new or variantions of the cars and
STILL call them a quantum without charging an armand a leg for the
privilage !!!

When i do get to build/get built my new coupe version i WANT to call
it a quantum cos it will look like one of the family but i can't do
that without permission/license of/from the company.I am sure Eddie
would have a much easier life too if he didn't have too make his
changes so different, or maybe Eddie would give us a new car too add
to the range?

When old Q was for sale i started work on looking into buying with a
friend but when he pulled out i couldn't raise the money so had to
drop it , in different circumstances i would still seriously consider
buying it ... oh it's so cruel!!!

[Quantum Owners] Re: Quantum Kit Cars is born.

2010-12-14 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
Just like to add my congrats to eddie :-)

Re: engines , i thought the 1.25 and 1.4engines from the Ka and later
fiestas had bearing issues at relatively low mileages, even without
failure they do seem to get very "kent" style tappy quite early in
their lives.
what about rover engines? the headgasket issues that plagued the early
k series seems to have gone quiet and both std type auto and flappy
paddle cvt gearboxes are available depending on model(see
gearboxproblems below)

Re:gearboxes , sorry tony, you and i would be left wanting as the Ka
has no auto variant(if they did i would have had to get the missus a
convertible version for her a long time ago). the late fiestas had the
odd semi auto option (a manual but well toleranced gearbox with some
servos and a electrical/hydraulic operated clutch system added
on)which due to changes in weight and aerodynamics could cause some
ecu issues , but also had the CVT that the earlier models had(almost
exaclty the same as the one i have in the coupe),but i have only ever
seen them on the 1.25 although it was apparently made in 1.4 as well.
the only other option if space permitted would be the boxes from the
late focus , a proper auto but quite a bit bigger.

Re: other thoughts.
a while back i did some research together with jim to find an
alternative rear axle for coupe and 2+2 models. i measured a few
fiesta mk3,4 and Ka axles.therewere many track variants but all were
quite a bit wider than what we had.i will have to look the data up but
i seem to remember it being about 70mm!! oversize.
i dontknow what thoughts have been made of windscreen but if the
whole body was being split centre front to rear to widen for the
windscreen/dash then axle and engine bay width problems would also be
resolved anyway.

Oh yes .. i DO like my CVT in the coupe but really glad i found one
attached to a 1.4 CVH and not the mr tappy crossflow that most are .
CVT takes a bit of getting used to but i have to agree with an article
that i read some time ago ,the best thing was to think of the throttle
as you would in a boat, open the throttle and watch the speed rise
then when you get to the desired speed(or get on the plane in a
boat)then back off too just enough to keep it there... :-)

[Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Zetec conversion

2011-05-27 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
regarding my 2+2 4x4 most of the key work has been completed , only
plumbing and wiring is
left to do.The rear driveshafts are mere stubs between the cv's the
distance is so small ,means
std bodywork though :-)
But due to my ongoing issues with my lower back and legs things are
on
hold for the mo.
But i did manage to source an interesting anomaly in place of the
mt75.. A sierra 4x4 AUTOMATIC gearbox! now it would seem ford has
never admitted to building one of these but the person i got it from
said it was removed from a 2.9v6 G plate sierra 4x4!. I have sourced
a
suitable 4 pot bellhousing which a local company has said they can
mod
to fit.
If i can just get my friend to stop tinkering with his renault 5 turbo
2
replica i might get it finally finished.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Turbos

2011-05-31 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
from my reading on the subject , it's not just the cooling on diesel
turbos that differ but the actual materials they are made from , ie
they don't need to withstand such high gas temps.this is the reason
why you don't see many variable vane petrol turbos much as the
mechanism can't cope .

that said i found a turbo from a 2.4l diesel was of similar exhaust
housing sizing to a 2l petrol , i also selected a turbo as used on the
1.4 tdci fiesta, peugeot, citroen engine to use on my 1.4 cvh , BUT the
cvt box means the engine revs and hence generates gas flow similar to
its diesel cousin!

really count.there was pictures on here of both mods but i think they

2011-07-30 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
check out fleebay you will find lots of empty alarm cases most with an
integral key(which could be deleted if necessary)most come from hong
kong for very little.
or do what i had done on our disco and remove the original system and
replace with something else? i picked up a non thatcham (but that
means nout with our cars anyway) for under £30 .it was a near straight
swap electrically.remember most alarms and remote central locking
units all operate the same lines anyway(a replacement single button
land rover remote would set you back £40 plus)

[Quantum Owners] Re: New engine for a saloon

2012-04-04 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
I have cougar v6 discs with xr4x4 calipers on the front of my coupe
but they do need 15" rims to clear.i have a mk5 escort master cyl ,
the details of that were on the club site at one time.

the power steering was from an mgtf(or mgf same thing)
i used the column as was along with the mg switchgear, ignition and
column plastics.

The bottom of the column has two uj's with a small shaft between .this
section does remove from the column so could easily be modded to fit
the std fiesta rack pinion. i have a one off rack made using a fiesta
body and rack bar but fitted with a mk3/4 escort pinion. the pitch of
teeth ,helix angle etc all match ok and it just screws in place of the
fiesta one. this mod allows the lower uj to fit straight on with no
mods !
you will need to fab up a suitable bracket to position the column ,
some have adjustable tilt which is nice.

The ecu to run the column is a fairly small item to hide.it needs a
hefty 60a constant supply! you will also need to provide it and
ignition live, tacho feed and speed input.the speed sensor screws into
the ford box as is .the sensor is used in many rovers as their
speedo .i have a electronic speedo(from y2k fiesta) using the ford
inline transducer on the coupe and the rover sensor piggys onto
that .i suppose you could get someone to make up a module to generate
this signal instead.

the switch gear electrics could be blended into the original loom
quite easily as most functions transpose ok,the coupe had a total
custom loom made to accomodate the dash and several other leccy
upgrades.

the important and most oddly expense item was the loom from the ecu to
the actual column. I got an mg breakers to strip the steering bit from
a damaged loom which cost bout 50 or so.if you wanted to solder to the
ecu rather than plug in you could save there.

pheewoo!

hope some of that makes sense , there should be pictures on here or
the club site of the end result in the coupe , sorry been a LONG time
since it was done so some of the finer bits are a bit fuzzy :-)

[Quantum Owners] Re: Converting a 2+2 into rear wheel drive

2012-06-11 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
having made some pretty serious cuts into the body of my 2+2 in the
process of fitting the 4x4 i can only agree with eddie on
caution.during the cutting processi had the whole body mounted on a
surface plate to keep it true!
I went with a seperate backbone chassis for my conversion with the
body attaching only where there was original mounting points(eg the
rear trailing arm brackets at the end of the sill tubes) or direct
into the steel side tubes.
Width is the biggest problem ,the 2+2 is REALLY narrow compared to
pretty much anything more modern.
if i ever manage to get my rwd coupe project under way then i plan to
widen the shell(straight down the middle)! and use bmw 3 series
running gear .they too use nice compact subframes,as well as the
choice of some fab engines(M3 powered coupe anyone?).This time i would
go fully composite ,only adding steel to reinforce just as the
existing cars are.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: Insurance time

2012-06-13 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
due to an insurance quirk i have to use the club scheme .
the problem stems from when my employment status changed from "not working
due to disability but employed" to "not working due to disability and
unemployed".
i had been the former for some 6 plus years , but then when i closed my
company down and became the latter all bar the club insurance scheme and
the coop(who insure our other car) chose to add a minimum of £300 to any
premium quoted as the employed status!!
pity the coop dont insure non std vehicles :-(

i agree with jim on the breakdown cover.I tried to get the cover extended
to proper breakdown cover for our other car but fj said the included cover
in the club policy couldn't do that!

[Quantum Owners] Re: Insurance time

2012-06-13 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk

if anyone is looking to insure a provisional driver alongside a full
license , give the coop a try.
they don't load up the policy and its excess for provisional drivers.when i
asked why they said it was due to the fact that the main driver was always
going to be with the prov at all times anyway!
when the driver passes their test for two years their personal excess
increases by 150 as a new driver , then reverts to the normal policy excess.
my wife has a provisional license for nigh on 20 years(she has never
bothered to take a test in case you wondered) and having stopped lessons 10
years ago ,likes to drive me around ,bonus!
a lot of insurance companies see this as she must be a horrific driver to
have not passed a test but that really isn't the case .

I have the mk3 dash in my coupe. I fitted the electeic mgtf steering column. I
also kept the mgf switch gear . The column need no mods to fit and only need
power and a speedo pickup. I changed the pinion in the fiesta rack to that from
an escort mk3 rack. The splines are then exactly the same as the uj from the
mgf.

I know the american units are not a complete kit but are substantialy cheaper

my 2+2 due to the large tunnel for the 4x44x4 box i only havr room for a heater
the size of a cornflake pack, they do one just about that size too!
For the other parts i plan on using 2nd hand compressor and evap rad from an
escort mk5 i stripped. I will need a new drier when the system i recharged so
the air con people tell me as the system has been open too long.

The thickness of the steel used on the 2+2 is much thicker (i cant remember
exaclty but it is much thicker when i measured it when i made the floor pan
mods to mine for the 4x4)than on the saloons. The box is also capped off and
fully laminated over at both ends unlike the saloons after kicking up over the
wheel arches

Re: [Quantum Owners] Automatic Gearbox needed. HELP!

2017-01-02 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
Be careful with mk5 type escorts as they are cvt boxes and the 1.6 zetecs
put a bit too much strain on them.
Best option really would be a focus box (4sp proper auto)and zetec but i
dont think that will go in a coupe engine bay, with a cvh and a cvt box you
have about a biro pens gap either side only! There is much more in a 2+2

[Quantum Owners] Heated coupe or 2+2 windscreens update!

2009-01-22 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk

Yes i know we have been here before but things have changed somewhat!

first up i have spoken to the supplier he will do the screens for
£130+vat each and £40+vat fully insured delivery , so that's just shy
of £200 all in delivered to YOUR door.

Now the situation still remains that we would need ten to get a batch
of fully tinted ones made up as due to the current climate etc etc he
cannot afford to keep too many in excess stock :-(

BUT. He has approx 7 CLEAR screens due in stock ready for delivery
from end of Feb.

Now the best bit we don't have to buy all of them :-)

He has said you could always get an suitable(read legal) all over
tint applied or just a top tint applied of some kind.

So if anyone is seriously interested please add your names to the list
below and i WILL forward them to the supplier to reserve you/me a
screen from the batch. Please show if you will take a clear one or only
are interested in a full tint. If you could also mail me off list a
direct contact email address and a contact phone number so
arrangements can be made.

Payment will be made direct to the supplier(details to be arranged).

1.Darren Siepka
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

Yes i know clear isn't to everyones taste but it's an option that
stands the best chance of getting a screen anytime soon. But if we were
to get 10 people together over the next couple of weeks then all the
better.

Lets get this sorted once and for all :-)

[Quantum Owners] possible coupe top mounts!

2009-03-05 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk

a long shot i know but does anyone have or have access to a MK1 VW
golf,jetta,scirocco or caddy?

i have been trying to source a replacement for the two bolt mk1 fiesta
style top front suspension mounts and these look damn near similar in
the picture.

what i need is to know the bolt spacing centres and a rough idea of
the size of the rubber bit visible through the metal plate.if they
seem close enough i will buy a pair and see but don't really want to
waste money on something totally unsuitable if at all possible. If
they do turn out to be suitable then we have a reasonably cheap
substitute for the discontinued fiesta ones.

It is a late type cylinder.

To remove the front subframe on a 2+2 that was factory glued on, to save the

[Quantum Owners] New large disc conversion

2020-05-13 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
I have worked out a large disc conversion for 2+2 and saloon using recent model
parts.you need 15" or larger wheels to fit the 280mm discs!!

The conversion is very simple, needing only two modifications!.

Parts needed.
Discs
Adc1280/dsk3118 or ndb1906.
These are ford ecosport 1.5d 2013 on.

Or you can use nbd207,
these are ford sierra/escort cosworth 4x4, note must be 4x4 as they only
fitted these to that model.

Calipers
I used
2007 volvo s40 300mm.
But these calipers are also fitted to volvo v70, s80, s60 and c70, also ford
focus mk3(11-), some mk2(05-11) and cmax.

BUT they must be from the 300mm disc models!!!
Do NOT get 278mm calipers as they won't work. The caliper mounting has 300 cast
into it for identification.

How to fit.
All that is needed is to drill out the holes in the hub to 12.2mm to clear the
caliper bolts which are 12mm(the old fiesta are 10mm)
Thats it!hose fits as normal, discs go straight on and with the hole opened so
do the calipers.
Note, if you use the cosworth disc you need a 5-6mm spacer between the caliper
and hub lug to correct the disc offset.

As usual, use of this information comes with no warranties or liability.
Please check your wheels and other clearance beforehand.
Magazine editor add this to the magazine if you please.

Enjoy and stay safe

[Quantum Owners] Bonnet hinge upgrade

2020-05-15 Thread dar...@siepka.me.uk
Just wanted to share a modification i made to the bonnet hinges on the 2+2.
Mine were damaged and coming away from the main moulding, the holes had
enlarged too.
I made a grp block using two layers of 450gsm then 6 layers of 2mm core mat,
then two further layers of 450gsm, i a shape i had made a card template of.
I did this on a bit of lightly waxed melamine with a plasticine ring around it
to keep the resin contained.
Once set i machined for a 10mm ball race(26mm od x 8mm wide).a stainless steel
double seal version was used.
This block was the glassed in place back onto the bonnet.
Now with the bolts tight it pivots smoothly on the bearing! No more grinding!
