As per thread subject I have noticed the boot outer skin and inner shell are
separating in places on my saloon. It looks like some sort of black
sealant/mastic has been used on mine. Anyone know how they were joined
originally by factory and any recommendations on method to fix ?

Thanks
John

Re: [Quantum Owners] Saloon Ventilation

2021-03-22 Thread kynastonp .
When I built my saloon people were complaining about misting of the side and
rear windows , the factory suggested fitting the astramax vent in the rear of
the door opening . I also fitted vents under the rear window to allow air
through the parcel shelf and more vents from the sides of the boot into the
inner wing . Never had a problem after that . The vents some people have fitted
in the rear wings are from a Nissan bluebird from 1986 onwards.

Further to what Jim was saying about air pressure,
I was told that the venting assisted in making sufficient air movement in the
cabin to let the blower pull in air more easily whilst not causing a negative
differential to the outside which would have encouraged leaks..
I have the grey Slat type vents in my saloon door post.

The best fix for windscreen misting would be to put an electric heated screen
in , which are a straight fit :-)

I don’t remember having any real issues on my saloon but it does also have the
splash guards in front of the front wheel arches.

As you say, the only real exit from a unmodified saloon is via the door hinge
openings.
Although, remember when the door is shut 99% of that area is blocked off by the
other half of the hinge.

I believe there have been cases of the bonded in glass popping out when doors
are slammed due to the air pressure.

John

Am I correct in thinking that, like many Q saloon owners, you are troubled with
dampness in the cabin and the consequent high (in comparison with mass-produced
cars) tendency for windows to steam up and such?

Prompted by a drive in torrential rain last year which caused the windscreen to
instantly and heavily steam up, reducing vision to near zero, I investigated
and as a result modified my Q as follows, which has resulted in dramatic
improvement. The mod is simple. Block off the heater air intakes in the
underside of the front wings just behind the headlights (I used some nice
springy closed cell polyurethane 50mm sponge cut oversize to the roughly
triangular shape of the intakes). The heater now draws air only through the
door hinge holes, where the air is relatively dry. The front intakes,
effectively within the wheel arch, drew not only moist air but water droplets
when driving in even quite light rain. Other owners have fitted wing arch
panels to shield the intakes from heavy tyre spray but I believe that to be
ineffective in the more extreme wet conditions. You will be wondering whether
the area of the hinge openings is sufficient, as was I, but although I was
prepared to drill a couple of additional 30mm dia holes each side that has not
been necessary. The area of the hinge holes is approximately equal to the area
of the gap around the lower (below waistline) portion of the door and at 80cm2
each side appears to be sufficient.

B pillar vents - mine has them but I believe the only real benefit is on the
nearside, to prevent a build-up of petrol fume in the event of an imperfect
seal in any of the filler pipe joins.

If you would like a chat to discuss further, my contact details are below.

Oh dear,
Sorry to hear about your incident, at least nobody was hurt.

You might want to check the rear brake setup if it’s spun like that, it may be
overbraked on the rear, does it have rear disks ?

I am trying to find my list of where the glass comes from.
Windscreen is certainly standard Mk1 or Mk2 Fiesta (either will fit with the
matching rubber)
I think, and i might be wrong until i find my list, the quarterlights were
Passat and the door glass is Astra (not donor)
I know the early hard top glass is Mk4 Escort but i think the later hard top
(yes is was bonded in) was Golf

There is a steel tube that runs up the windscreen pillars , hopefully that
hasn’t bent.

You should be able to get a new hockey stick from Quantum

I will keep looking for my non donor car parts list, unless anybody else can
find a copy, used to be on the old smartgroups site before we moved to Google.

Strong little cars those 2+2's and did not intend to find out until under hard
braking on a dry road the back over took the front. Ended up visiting a ditch
and hedge. Still restored my faith in people, they stopped and towed me out,
drove home.

On assessment, one bent tie rod, and lot broken glass and some excess hawthorne
hedge.

So, does any one know what the glass is please? Specifically

Rear heated glass on the later hard top, bonded I believe.
Front quarter light n/s
Assume windscreen and passenger window are standard MK2 bits (believe based on
83 ish car)

the windscreen did intially survive, but the hedge got in on the way our, guess
it was being vindictive.

Other things are the fibre glass top (hockey stick) on top of quarter light is
broken and front corner to hard top and not sitting flush at moment. Hard top
should fibre glass ok and hockey stick may unless anyone has one lying around.

Passenger door jammed shut but got even gaps all round, so will look at on a
dry weeked.

On the saloon only the ARB itself and the rubber bushes are Mk2 Fiesta.
There are no mounting brackets like on the Fiesta, the clamps bolt directly to
the floor.
And the Clamps are top hat shaped clamps with 2 bolts rather than P shaped with
1 bolt on the Fiesta

Hi All

Are the saloon rear ARB brackets, P clamps etc. custom QSC or standard Fiesta
MK2? I do have a build manual but it does not seem to specify.

Currently running what looks like a standard XR2 ARB 14mm diameter but as I
will be rebuilding rear suspension soon thinking of upgrading it.

be painted as the gelcoat colours they used were not UV stable . Polishing
or cutting is only a temporary solution .

Re: [Quantum Owners] Quantum 2+2 Brakes advise please (and fan switch!)

2020-04-06 Thread kynastonp .
Jim is correct ,the early saloons did not fit the rear limiting valves and
quantum specified the smaller rear cylinders to balance out the brakes. Over
time some cars were fitted with the larger cylinders when maintenance was done
and this caused problems to owners. The factory sent out a warning notice to
owners about this . They then modified the cars to take the limiting valve
,marked the location on the body and included the instructions on how to modify
the valve bracket .

The rear brake cylinders are from Mk1 / Mk2 Fiesta

Possible sizes are:

Mk1 Fiesta:

15 mm
17.5 mm
19 mm

Mk2 Fiesta

15 mm
17.5 mm
20.6 mm

The bigger sizes are for the XR2
The actual size Quantum recommended changed and it was also different depending
on if you fitted the rear bias / inertia valves to limit the rear brake
pressure.
The problem is the rear of the 2+2 is a lot lighter than the rear of a Mk1 or
Mk2 Fiesta and the rear wheels can lock under heavy braking which isn’t a good
thing.
I seem to remember i was asked when i bought my kit what my car spec was and if
i was using the rear bias valves and Quantum supplied the correct size.

If you’ve had no problems with the rear brakes then i would refit whatever size
is on there.
If you take the drum off and pull the rubber back you should be able to measure
the bore dia with some calipers without having the remove anything else.

If you have a gas torch or hot air gun then get the engine hot, drain some of
the coolant off (carefully) and then heat the switch as much as you can.
This may free it off.
Otherwise, you will have to fit one in the top hose, you can buy adaptors from
the kit car parts suppliers, a tube with a boss in to take a switch.

If you manage to get the switch out or fit a different one then make sure you
replace the connector.
As soon as the connector or switch contacts overheat they damage the other
half, replacing the switch with a overheated connector will just result in the
connection overheating again and needing another new switch.
Ideally the fan should be switched via a relay.
Interestingly while sorting out a early Mk1 Fiesta loom for 003 i found there
was a factory fitted relay on the fan, something they must have dropped later
to save a few pennys.

Hiya folks

I am after some advise please? I am looking to change the rear brake cylinders
on Q2-002 as I have a very minor weep issue, I have read both the build
manuals, and both state that these are not standard Fiesta parts. The late
build manual says 'change the rear wheel cylinders to the correct size, new
ones are supplied in the kit', and the original build manual says '17.5mm for
Vented Front discs, and 15mm for solid front discs, this is not the same on any
other Fiesta'...

Does anyone know of the correct parts please, and also are Ferrodo still the
brake shoe brand of choice, or is there anything more suitable? Also I may
change the front discs / pads as I am not going anywhere fast (pun intended!),
is there anything to look out for on these in terms of brand etc?

Finally - the fan control switch has failed, I have a new one to fit, but no
amount of socket work will shift it, and I am heading for causing damage - any
recommendations for where and how to fit an new switch to the cooling system,
or should i just fit a manual switch on the dashboard?

Hope you are all keeping safe, and best regards

Interesting. So the Logbook needs to read historic? I wondered if that had
changed as we don’t do tax discs anymore and the whole taxing process is more
automated online.

Showing my ignorance here but what donor is the 1978 car? That would be Fiesta
Mk1?

They certainly have changed the reg system over the years, then.

All three of my quantum only have a single date of registration.all are
correctly registered as the appropriate quantum type.
On one there is a note on front page in sect3 special notes: states 1.kit built
converted- assembled from parts all of which may not be new.

There are no other notes or comments.
My saloon is dated 85 , one 2-2 86 and one is 78.
I don't know about the other two but the 78 2-2 I built and kept its doner reg

They all only have simple rivet on plates that old q used to issue.

Good point. I have forgotten it was as late as 1998 SVA came in. Both kits I

has a single 1986 age. On the tax free issue, you get road tax online. And you
have to apply for it as usual but pay nothing. So I sort of assume that if the
reg date is 40 year or more ago you pay nothing with no human intervention?

Interestingly my chassis number is a long format one but I was allowed to rivet
a pre-stamped plate on the 2+2 frame and another on the fibreglass body. That
was Aberdeen in 2001. My Blackjack Avion number came moulded into the
fibreglass body tub. That was 2004.

I would say most Quantum’s are pre-SVA
My 2+2 is probably the closed pre-SVA, i took the paperwork down to the local
VRO office the evening of the very last day before the SVA came into force in
1998
My 2+2 is a B reg, not the donor reg but another allocated one. It has 2 dates
on the registration, 1985 (donor age) and 1998 (registration date).

The trouble was all the different VRO offices had different interpretations of
the rules.
Mine let me have the chassis number as Q2-099 but i know many other VRO said it
had to be a minimum length.
I was also allowed to have my chassis plate screwed on, other VRO insisted the
chassis number was stamped into the spaceframe.

A lot of older kit cars were still registered as the donor car, for quite a
while you could get it corrected by the DVLA without a problem but nowadays
it’s a lot of hassle.

Hi Daren,

Thanks for the info. That would seems to indicate it is the reg doc date.

My Q 2+2 which I built was SVA’ed and given a first registered 2001 as a
Quantum but age related plate due to donor parts qualifying as 1989. So which
age is zero tax reference?

Were the older Q’ss even pre SVA? I know there was some issue about a few kit
cars that were not registered correctly as the Kit type they became. But my
Coupe certainly is registered as a Quantum, but just 1986 still. My Son’s
Coupe is a Q plate, but registered to donor date. So many combinations. If
the reference is the plate a Q can never be tax free as there is not associated
age, but the 2+2 is only 9 years away from tax free. If it is the reg doc date
new ball game and Q’s can be tax exempt.

Front - 1367mm (53.9in)
Rear - 1321mm (52.0in)
XR2:
Front - 1385mm (54.6in)

Track is measured to the centre of the wheel so different wheel widths and

Re: [Quantum Owners] Nose Cone Wiring

2019-08-04 Thread kynastonp .
If you want a neat package and 1000 volts peak reverse volts try digi-key part
number gbpc3510-nd even has a hole for a mounting bolt. All the diodes do is
drive the relay to position the headlamp cover motors so only the coil current
of the relay is passed through the diode.

10A is certainly enough current handling capacity for a couple of indicators
and it may well be that the diodes are not subjected to significant back emf.

If it's working, they're probably fine. But if it fails, consider getting a
diode with a higher reverse voltage rating. Of course getting one that is
encapsulated is not going to be easy, but there are easy ways to solve that
problem.

Meanwhile, don't worry.

Eek, I didn't know there were different sizes..

When I rewired mine I got these from car builders solutions.

https://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/silicon-diode

They seem to work and they were the only diodes they sell.

Dear All,

In the Q manual the nose cone wiring has two diodes. The values required
are not mentioned. What was the Quantum spec?

I appreciate it is in a 12V system so 15 or 16 volt would cover, but does
anyone know the minimum wattage?

Thanks

Derek

2019-08-03 Thread kynastonp .
The diodes supplied were 1N4005 , 5 amp diodes . all they are doing is
driving the coil of a relay when either the sidelights or the headlamp main
beam flash is used so 5 amp should be more than adequate. I used a bridge
rectifier on mine as it is easy to mount and comes with Lucas spade
connectors , needs a bit of care to get the right diodes ~~ to
sidelight/headlamp and- to relay coil .

This is modifiable. The two ends are plastic and clipped onto the metal rail.
It comes with a plug and wire tails so you can renew the plug. (and fit the
socket of the new motor, of course) It seems to need 20 mm shortening to fit
the Coupe door, so a 20mm spacer fitting.

As an aside, my Coupe ford regulator seems to have been cut down by 20mm by
being cut in the middle of the rail and welded back together and ground to
shape. This brings the mounting brackets closer together. Was this the usual
way when built?

I built my 2 + 2 new and it needs more shortening but basically you cut one end
shorter. Mounting brackets stay in the same position.

I built saloon 103 and the method used was to bend the bottom inch or so of
the rail towards the center of the car ,but this meant the cable rubbed on
the bottom of the rail and eventually wore through and jammed. On 2+2 q2129
the rivet holding the nylon part of the rail was removed the piece moved up
and bolted onto the rail ,a metal slotted spacer was then placed inline
with the cable outer. It is interesting that you found a fiesta MK2 window
mechanism as I worked for ford at the time of the MK2 and never saw one
with electric windows.

Grateful for the comments left, I forgot to say that the rims are 13" diameter
currently fitted with 165x70x13 tyres (not one of which is the same as the
others).

I've been looking at WheelBase for alternatives. Not sure what 5.5J and 6J
means but if I do replace the wheels I think it will be with 14" rims and
185x55x14 tyres, they should fit within the wheel arches and not foul
suspension struts or body.

Thanks for your help!

Hi

Looking to get advice as to folding down convertible hood as can't find any
info in the build manual for this. When I fold mine down on the 2+2 the part
that has the front lock fastenings just flaps around. How is this kept in place
when hood is down?

Many thanks

When i built my saloon i noticed several cars with the wheels offset so i built
the suspension without springs and got the wheels at the correct ride height
then drilled the panhard rod mount. Which panhard rod have you got, tubular or
u section ,i have seen many of them bent especially u section ones ,very often
the bend is from someone jacking the car on the rod

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Fatter tyres??

I'm hoping someone can shed some light
Giving the Q saloon a once-over prior to Stoneleigh, and I noticed the rear
offside tyre has scraped the plastic sleeve on the damper. I didn't have the
problem with the previous tyres which were the same size (185/55x14) The wheels
are as before (43.5 inset). I can only think the tyre shape
(Dunlop) is a bit different to the previous tyres (Firestone) - the new
ones do measure 185mm across. I've also tried switching wheels to different
corners just n case of some crazy offset difference in
manufacture.  Measuring the clearance to the rear trailing arms
is 5mm on the offside and 20mm on the nearside, so far from ideal. The only
ways I can see of changing this are 1) different tyres, but a lottery as to
result.  2) spacers (I have an aversion to them, as do insurance. 3) change
the wheels (maybe Peugeot for less inset?) or 4) Fit an adjustable panhard rod
to attempt to "even it up" which may give a problem on the nearside.  As
far as I can see it the close clearance in itself is an issue, not helped by
the
poor design (panhard rod) which moves the axle laterally when the
suspension compresses. With the car on level ground the panhard rod is
horizontal, so any movement (up or down) will have the effect of moving the
axle/RH wheel to the offside of the car, thus improving the current situation,
but clearly bush compliance/stack up of movement has caused the tyre to touch
the plastic shield.
Has anyone else got a clearance issue on rear tyres
on a saloon?  Edited to add...
OR INDEED A 2+2, since the rear axle is the
same

Re: [Quantum Owners] Quantum - Registration Details Question

2015-12-12 Thread kynastonp .
Ryan
If the car is registered as an XR2 then it is not correctly registered as a
quantum and changing this may involve an inspection by vosa called an iva.
This going to be difficult to pass as the quantum is an old design .You
need to check the registration document thoroughly and be sure.
Driving it wrongly registered is not a good idea.
Sorry to be negative but you could end up with a car you can not use.

By the way ,what size are the actual bushes? Looking at a number of

Well ,if anyone has any idea where I can get them I would be relieved

Re: [Quantum Owners] Quantum 2+2 being broken :(

2015-06-18 Thread kynastonp .
The split driveshafts were fitted to mk2 fiestas 1.1 and 1.4 but were a
small diameter so may not be suitable for large power output.

   Niel,

The thorque problem can be solved by using the Fiesta 3 piece drive shaft

Fiesta MK1 sprint if I am correct.
The long drivesaft that causes the torque problems is divided in 2
shafts!! so that the left and right driveshafts are the same length – with
a support bearing in the middle that is bolted to the CVH
In order to fit it to your Fiat engine you need to make a bracket . . of
 some kind.

Hard to find but they are available ( I have only one)

*Subject:* [Quantum Owners] Quantum 2+2 being broken :(

And you have no idea how much that hurts...

Some of you will know my Fiat Coupe five cylinder turbo powered 2+2.
Unfortunately, even after four years or so of development, it has not been
possible to cure a vicious but unpredictable torque effect which, at high
power, has a tendency to launch the car at the ditch. The time has come to
draw a line under it and concentrate on the rolling (and expensive!)
restoration of my Fiat Coupe instead. Because of the potentially lethal
handling effect, I am not selling the car complete.

Instead, I'm removing the Fiat engine and gearbox and offering either a
rolling chassis, or, if there's no interest in that, then the various
parts. All suspension and moving parts have under six thousand miles on
 them.

 So here's the list:

Rolling chassis, sans engine, gearbox, driveshafts, ECU, and suchlike

4 x Team Dynamic Monza wheels with Toyo T1-R tyres: two new (fitted a
fortnight ago) and two with better than 5mm tread: 185/60R15 (from memory)
 - the wheels are quite a low offset so will stick out a tiny bit on a
 Quantum
1 x Ford Pepperpot allow 13 with frankly rubbish tyre (the spare)
 2 x front XR2 shock absorbers
 2 x rear XR2 shock absorbers
1 x rear axle, swing arms, etc
 2 x brake calipers: V6 Mondeo (need a 15 wheel to clear)
2 x doors with drop glass and powered winders
2 x leather seats, I believe from Audi TT
1 x steel fuel tank with internal swirl pot and external high pressure
 pump and filter
1 x Fiat Coupe hydraulic powered steering rack with Fiesta track rods
1 x hard top and rear glass
1 x soft top, really only good for a pattern, but with the irons
1 x stainless steel exhaust, will need the front changing to mate with
 Ford engines
1 x boot with lock and gas ram lifters
1 x bonnet, modified to fit around a larger radiator but usable as is.

No doubt some other sundry parts... note that the engine frame has been
*severely* modified to accommodate the Fiat engine and the suspension
points have been moved. Ideally you'd want to rebuild this, or drop a new
one on. The front bulkhead has had a small (2 by 6) hole cut to fit the
Fiat pedal box and brake servo; easily fixed with a plate.

As it stands, the car is road legal with an MOT from a fortnight ago. I'll
be dropping the engine and gearbox out next weekend (27th). The car is at
FCSS in Upton upon Severn (just off the M5 near Tewkesbury) so will need
 collecting from there.

If anyone's interested in anything, make me an offer. If not, the wheels
will go on eBay and the rest will go to the scrappy.

 Neil

 Hi guys,

I am after some help with parts. My Xtreme failed MOT yesterday due to
perished anti Roll bar drop links on the rear. I have no idea what vehicle
these are from. Would anyone be able to help.

I have also just found an issue during acceleration. When accelerating
heavily the ignition fuse blows (cutting fuel pump) I cant find any obvious
 rason for this.

Also, getting in contact with anyone from Quantum appears to be
impossible. Does anyone have a contact number for them that works?

 Thanks for any support
