Yes, there are several positions we're looking to fill right now:

https://www.qubes-os.org/join/

As kulinacs mentioned, we also tag issues on GitHub with the "help wanted"
label, which signifies that the core developers do not plan to tackle the
issue themselves. Those issues are likely to be resolved only if someone from
the community (such as yourself!) submits a patch, so browsing that list is a
great way to find a way to contribute.

Finally, I also track community-developed features here:

https://www.qubes-os.org/qubes-issues/

As you can see, the status term "Partial" refers to a feature that is
partially complete but no longer under active development. (In some cases,
this basically means "abandoned.") Finishing the work that has already been
started in any of those cases would be very welcome.

It's certainly possible that a bug was introduced, but hardware compatibility
has always been the biggest stumbling block for Qubes, so another possibility
is that your hardware is compatible with earlier versions of Qubes but not
with these later versions. Unfortunately, this is very hard to diagnose.

I don't have exact dates, but I infer from the release date of R3.1 that it's
probably been approximately five months.

AFAIK, there is currently no "install to disk" option. This is a feature we
plan to add in the future:

You can see the main new features in R3.2 (since R3.1) here:

We need more information before we can tell what the problem is. It's possible
that we already have an issue open for it (depending on what it is). If not,
we can open one, once we have some actionable information. Marek (CCed) will
be able to provide better guidance on how you can try to gather the required
information.

Hi Nick,

Once you understand the basics, then it should be easy to configure the VMs
you want.

I strongly recommend first watching the Tour video linked in my previous
message. Then, read the Getting Started page:

https://www.qubes-os.org/getting-started/

After that, you should refer to the documentation for any topics about which
you need more information:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/

Now, on to your specific use cases:

> -I want a banking VM that are allowed only https (or even better only some
> domains).

This one is easy. Just create the VM in Qubes Manager, then edit the firewall
rules tab to allow only HTTPS connections (and, optionally, on your bank's
domains, but it will be harder to get this to work well).

> - open attachments in thunderbird to a untrusted vm but let save them on my
> personal vm

This one is also easy. By default, Thunderbird should include the "Qubes
Attachments" extension. You can check the box in the options to open all
attachments in DispVMs (assuming this fits your need to open every attachment
in an untrusted VM). There will also be buttons to save the attachment
directly (in the VM where Thunderbird is running) or to send all attachments
to a different target VM.

> - uses spyderoak to synchronize and backup data on some external USB

The basic procedure here is to install SpiderOak (either in a TemplateVM or in
a StandaloneVM), then connect the external USB drive to the VM in which
SpiderOak is running. You'll probably want to have a USB qube, then use the
"Attach/detach block devices" option in Qubes Manager. You can read all about
using and managing USB devices here:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/usb/

> - uses crashplan to backup NAS

Same basic idea here. Install CrashPlan (I prefer to use a StandaloneVM due to
the way the CrashPlan installer works), then connect your NAS to the VM in
which CrashPlan is running (how to do this depends on your NAS and your
preferences).

> - uses Windows to use Office and lightroom and photoshop

You can read all about Windows VMs here:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/windows-appvms/

[qubes-users] Routing network traffic in sys-usb using multiple devices

2016-08-11 Thread Adrian Rocha
Hi,

I have two network devices and one only USB controller, so both devices are in
the same VM (sys-usb). I want to route some app-VMs by one network and the rest
by the other network, for that I have created two firewall VMs but both are
connected to the same network VMs because, as I commented, I can not divide the
network devices in different VMs.
By default all the traffic is going by only one network device. This is the
configuration in my sys-usb:

[user@sys-usb ~]$ ip route list
default via 172.20.1.1 dev enp0s0u2 proto static metric 100
default via 192.168.8.1 dev enp0s0u3 proto static metric 101
10.137.4.8 dev vif2.0 scope link metric 32750
10.137.4.29 dev vif9.0 scope link metric 32743
172.20.0.0/21 dev enp0s0u2 proto kernel scope link src 172.20.2.255 metric
100
192.168.8.0/24 dev enp0s0u3 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.8.100
metric 100

The firewall IPs are 10.137.4.8 and 10.137.4.29

I know how to route a traffic to an specific IP using "ip route add" to a
determined device network, but How can I route the complete traffic from one
firewall VM by one device network and the traffic from other firewall VM by the
other device network?

Regards

I try to install the driver into my debian template vm but I always get the
same error with many different installation options:

Installation

Ensure you have the necessary prerequisites:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms

Clone this repository:

git clone https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes.git

Set it up as a DKMS module:

sudo dkms add ./rtl8192cu-fixes

Build and install it (this version number may change, it is .10 as of
october 19 2015

sudo dkms install 8192cu/1.10

Refresh the module list:

sudo depmod -a

Ensure the native (and broken) kernel driver is blacklisted:

sudo cp ./rtl8192cu-fixes/blacklist-native-rtl8192.conf /etc/modprobe.d/

And reboot. You're done.

this command always gives me an error: (dkms)
 sudo dkms install 8192cu/1.10

Error! Your kernel headers for kernel 4.1.13-9.pvops.qubes.x86_64 cannot be

In practice dom0 memory is dynamically allocated, up to the 4GB (4GiB?)
limit. So there is no much need to adjusting this limit manually. But
there are some benefits of having it smaller - kernel needs to allocate
some metadata for every memory page (up to the limit), so you can save
few MBs by lowering the limit. Not a big deal.
On the other hand, having the limit too small will mean dom0 will use
swap, which will make the whole system a lot slower.

TL;DR if you have 8GB in total, don't bother. For smaller total memory,
it may help setting the limit to 2GB.

tl;dr i should be sleeping not setting up this laptop. But I do have an
intelligent question:

dom0 seems to only use about half a gig of RAM; is there any reason it's

Re: [qubes-users] Re: Thinkpad T410 installation issues

2016-08-11 Thread Jessica Litwin
Hi,

Just a quick update, I was able to get qubes installed with the help of
some different media (my original media was faulty) and I am up and
running. I do have one question though:

With vt-d off, my system works fine, however I would like to enable vt-d.
So, I do the steps outlined [https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/thinkpad_x201/]
thus for iommu=no-gfx but when I enable vt-d the display is still garbled.

While I am still going to try and troubleshoot this issue on my own if
anyone has any insight it would be appreciated.

P.S.: Is there an easy way to set my capslock as control in all my VM's?
It's driving me a bit nuts :)

There are (at least) three different ways you can attempt to use a USB 3.0
drive:

1. qvm-usb (usbip)
2. qvm-block (same as "Attach/detach block devices" in Qubes Manager)
3. Directly connected to a USB qube.

Marek is saying that method 1 doesn't yet support USB 3.0. Methods 2 and 3
should still support it.
