[qubes-users] How to change TemplateVM update method from Whonix to just another appvm?

2018-08-06 Thread Sphere
So upon installation of Qubes I have set updating of TemplateVMs through Whonix
but now I'm actually stuck with it and I want to change it to updating through
just another AppVM.

Could anyone guide me to what commands I need to use in order to fix this? (I
actually wish this was an option in Qubes settings UI as well)

[qubes-users] Qubes 4.0 sluggish feel

2018-08-06 Thread Outback Dingo
I dont remeber qubes being so sluggish on a skylake laptop with 64Gb,
qubes is installed on a SSD, however it now seems to take an awful
long time to switch windows, change tabs in firefox and chhrome,
launch VMs

also note that screen rendering, i can actually watch web pages paint,
as though video is being quirly or something, it is an NVIDIA card

any suggestions, nothing is swapping, memory seems ok, ive even
allocated 8192 mb to 2 vms which i see it in, both fedora and debian,
and i am up to date update wise.

Hi,

I think you should be able to just set sys-whonix as updateVM and then
switch to the onion repos in each template. It works for me in 3.2.

There are instructions in the whonix docs:

Re: [qubes-users] qubes in doctors office as server for clients?

2018-08-06 Thread Stuart Perkins
The security model of Qubes may not be what you want for a "server" primarily
due to the relative inaccessibility of an appVM from "outside".

[qubes-users] qubes clipboard mangles text character (emdash)

2018-08-06 Thread Ryan Tate
When pasting text through the Qubes Clipboard, I noticed the emdash character
(—) is silently removed.

Reproduction:

Copy this text, paste it elsewhere in SAME AppVM (so no Qubes Clipboard
involvement): One — two three.

It should paste fine.

Copy the same text to the Qubes Clipboard (Control-C Control-Shift-C), paste
into same program in DIFFERENT AppVM with Control-Shift-V Control-V.

Expected: Text is same

Seen: Text is mangled, no more "—".

Now, Joanna of the Qubes team has written that Qubes only uses the passive X11
clipboard with no "rich text"
But this is still just plain text, albeit utf-8, it should work fine in passive
mode. From what I can tell googling around, X11 clipboard supports utf8/Unicode
so even if emdash is non ASCII shouldn't it still be supported? Is there some
security risk to pasting unicode text, or is this a bug?

Thanks for any insights.

Hello,

I am new to Qubes, and so far it's been... an experience.

When I perform a whonix check on any of the whonix VMs, I get an error window
that is quite confusing, because it doesn't actually state what it is
complaining about. The message says:
ERROR: systemd Clock Check Result:
Unexpected results by timedatectl
It then goes on to list the Local time, which is correct, and Universal time,
which is again correct, and both Local and Universal are the same. In other
words, there is no error, because both times are actually correct, and the
system is set to UTC.

So what is the error? Stating something is unexpected without actually listing
what that something is does not facilitate troubleshooting in any way.

BTW, I'd attach a screenshot, but the error window pops up in the Dom0 desktop
and there doesn't seem to be any way to share it with the anon-whonix VM where
I am composing this email. I tried qvm-copy in a Dom0 console but got a command
not found message. I searched the Qubes-OS site for instructions on how to
share a screenshot between Dom0 (or any file for that matter), but to no avail.
So if it is possible it is not very obvious as to how.

Thanks for any information regarding this apparent non-error, and/or how to
supply the screenshot.

Now the dom0 is being updated through sys-whonix-14 but all vm templates are

Is it possible to update everything over TOR (sys-whonix-14) ?
How best to do this - change the repositories into VM templates to TOR repo or
change rule for all templates on qubes.UpdatesProxy policy?

(for example, $type:TemplateVM $default allow,target=sys-whonix-14)

It's a known problem and there's an open issue for it.
The problem is that fedora have been updating the pulseaudio stable
version, and the Qubes updates to match are working their way in to
Qubes stable.
You may be able to resolve by using packages from the Qubes testing
repository. I don't use Fedora so cant vouch for this.
Have a look at
