[qubes-users] Re: off topic - invite codes to 'riseup'

2019-06-03 Thread gorsrosdan
Dear qubes-users,

I'm an independent journalist in Quasar, Azerbaijan, and would urgently need
any kind of anonymous/untraceable email account (even not by the government or
any agencies such as Dövlət Təhlükəsizlik Xidməti and alike). I read a lot
about riseup.net and was wondering if there are two users with such accounts,
who kindly could help me with invites. As I understand, I would need two
invites.

Are there any better/safer alternatives that are also without charges?

Thank you much in advance.

As I've said in the other thread:

Mounting the same device two times in different VMs is a bad thing to do

One device should only be mounted inside a single VM unless it's some
special networking file system (e.g. nfs), but even then it's not meant
to be used with qvm-block, but over the network...

[qubes-users] vpn under whoni

2019-06-03 Thread Eva Star
It was all fine with "whonix <- vpn" for years. But now it now work. It's not
possible now to ping 1.1.1.1 when vpnVM connected to sys-whonix, but if I
reconnect it to firewall or other vpn then all works fine. Of course, the main
problem not with "ping", but vpnVM can not connect to vpn server.

Maybe something changed? Maybe some new more strict iptable rules at
sys-whonix?
Thanks

I'm sorry for the pain in doing this - you could always have booted the
openBSD qube with a USB attached, and transferred the files that way.
Like a sneakernet but smaller scale - a fingernet?

You dont say *from where* you are able to ping. Yes, this looks like a
DNS issue.

If you want to get this working from the BSD qube, then check
/etc/resolv.conf
This isn't necessary - in fact you may prefer NOT to allow outgoing
traffic originating from the openBSD firewall.

You say that rule you have is "in pf" - do you mean "in fw"?? It's just
not a pf thing.
So if it *is* in fw, and you are able to ping from fw, then this is looking
good.
Simplest way to proceed is to set /etc/resolv.conf in fw to use 9.9.9.9

Give just a little more detail on what's working and from where.

[qubes-users] Docker on Qubes OS 4.0.1

2019-06-03 Thread jerome moliere
Hi all,

if docker works one time  inside a domain, it seems that is's dropped
once the domain is halted...

find / -name "docker" returns nothing even if I installed the deb
package (following the official procedure)

I changed a few things following the Qubes 3.2 tutorial about docker :
http://jrruethe.github.io/blog/2016/04/15/running-docker-in-qubes/

I don'  understand why those binaries disappear , I can understand that
the systemd service is not run by default so that the daemon does not
listen but how the debian packages can be deleted ?

Do you have any valuable up to date documentation for docker ?

Kind regards

I'm now able to successfully ping 8.8.8.8 but not google.com. Indicating a
dns issue?

The dns setting in pf is iptables -t nat -I PR-QBS -p udp --dport 53 -j DNAT
--to 9.9.9.9

Yes, you're right I need to clarify some points.

1/ The pinging I referred to i.e. 8.8.8.8 & google.com was from openFW

2/ The rule I referred to in pf was a typo and as you guessed, should
read fwVM

3/ As suggested, I've input into /etc/resolv.conf "nameserver 9.9.9.9"

4/ Have tried to ping from fwVM 8.8.8.8 . It returned "network is
unreachable"

5/ Have tried to ping from fwVM google.com . It returned "temporary
failure in name resolution"

[qubes-users] Asus Touchpad - Mouse pointer movement weirdness

2019-06-03 Thread Adam Lewis
Hi all. I posted this HCL, which should help us to answer this particular
question as well;
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/qubes-users/HCL$20-$20ASUSTeK_COMPUTER_INC_-GL553VD$2020190519%7Csort:date/qubes-users/QDLjiYT6pEI/COi35_WxAwAJ

This machine came to me with Windows 10 on it, which had no issues with the
touchpad, suggesting that whatever is going on isn't hardware related. On
qubes, however, I've used xev to identify that the touchpad doesn't send
pointer movement events (generally speaking), unless I also hold a finger
over either the left or right touchpad mouse buttons. If I do place a
finger on either button, no matter how light or hard I press, the pointer
will move as I like. It will also operate as desired if I place a finger
somewhere else on the touchpad, but less reliably than on the buttons. Tap
to click (left and right), and multifinger scrolling work perfectly no
matter what.

Holding the left/right mouse buttons of my external usb device doesn't
influence whether it works or not, so perhaps the button press isn't as
important as having a larger surface area to complete an electrical
circuit? I've also tried using the synaptics driver, but it actually seems
less functional than the libinput default.

The only exception to the rule is that, rarely, the pointer will catch a
movement request and jump before immediately reverting to being
nonresponsive. This doesn't seem entirely dependent on "sweet spots" as I
originally though, but I still think there is some correlation between it
deciding to work and where I try from on the touchpad.

All help is appreciated, and if I can provide more information, please just
let me know.

Much thanks,
Adam

There is simple correlation as you describe, it's just that fw needs to

Re: [qubes-users] Domain [*] has failed to start: Cannot execute qubesdb-daemon

2019-06-03 Thread Steve Coleman

On 5/31/19 3:48 PM, Steve Coleman wrote:
After doing a reinstall and restore from backup of my Qubes 4.0 system,
I have a number of AppVM's that do not want to start for some unknown
reason. The frustrating thing is there are no AppVM or dom0 logs that
give me any clue as to where to start chasing down the problem. I have
grep'ed all logs for "qubesdb-daemon" in dom0, and all I can find is
qubes.log is saying it could not start the daemon. Not very helpful.

All log files in /var/log/qubes/qubesdb.VMNAME.log are zero bytes for
all AppVM's that do not run.

Putting the broken AppVM in debugging mode does not help, nor does using
the -p and -v flags on the qvm-[run,start] command lines. Why it won't
start is a total enigma since I can not see any error logs on either
side. Some AppVM's work just fine, while others simply do not. They all
use the exact same fedora-29 template and the same settings that they
had before the backup.

From dom0 qubesvm.py starting at line 1537 I see what appears to be the
relevant code giving my pop-up error message:

try:
 yield from self.start_daemon(
     qubes.config.system_path['qubesdb_daemon_path'],
     str(self.xid),
     self.name)
 except subprocess.CalledProcessError:
     raise qubes.exc.QubesException(
     'Cannot execute qubesdb-daemon)

Is this code unable to create a system_path using the xid and appvm
name? Or just read one? A subprocess fork error, or an error deeper
inside some nameless forked process?

Most VM's start normally, so it should not be the "path" to the daemon
executable on either side, as that path and executable is in common with
other VM's that work just fine with the exact same template.

I only thing I see different between these is qvm-prefs is returning xid
== -1 for those that seem not to work, and positive integer values for
those that do work. If the above code is building a path using the -1
xid then this might be a problem?

Could this somehow also be evidence of some kind of lvm pool or qubes
database corruption from the restore process?  I don't recall seeing any
error messages during the restore processing, but as it happens, the
ones that do not work were actually VM's restored later in that overall
process. Since they were deemed less important I happened to do them
last. Not sure if that could be relevant here or not, as I have the
exact same system disk space as before. It just sounds suspicious that
the later ones to be restored are the ones that seem to be not running.

Anyone have a clue where else to look for a real error messages? Perhaps
some esoteric dmesg or xl command looking for a xen system error by
another name? Or do I just need to --set a unique xid to each AppVM to
make them start properly?

thanks,

Steve

Ok, I did some more testing on this, and it makes no sense...

If I clone the broken AppVM, then the clone made from it will run just
fine. But wait... there is more.

If I then delete the original AppVM and rename the new clone back to the
original name, that working AppVM fails with the same "can't start
qubesdb-daemon" error.

If I clone the working clone, and give that new clone the original name,
again it fails to run.

Directly renaming a broken AppVM to any other VM name appears to fix the
problem, but copying it back to the original name breaks it again.

If I delete the broken AppVM and create an brand new AppVM with the same
broken VM name then that brand new VM will not run, giving the same error.

A clone of a clone of a clone works just fine, as long as you don't give
it the original VM name.

So, it appears that just having that specific VM name will somehow
prevent it from ever running. When the AppVM has any other name then it
seems to work just fine. I just can't name any VM with the same original
VM name.

Driver issue? If the touchpad is PS/2, might be able to confirm by
booting Fedora 25 on your hardware, or by figuring out which driver
needs to be updated in dom0. If USB, try booting the same distribution

After renaming/deleting the broken VM's there are no references left in
the qubes.xml file.

However, after renaming the VM's to another name and deleting the log
files in:

/var/log/qubes/*.VMNAME*.log
/var/log/xen/console/*VMNAM*.log
/var/log/libvirt/libxl/VMNAME.log

then moving the VM name back, everything ran correctly. My guess is that
there was a file permission or ownership that got messed up and therefor
qubesdb-daemon was unable to open that resource so it bailed out with no
error message.

The ownership of the qrexec.VMNAME.log and qubesdb.VMNAME.log are now
username.qubes where they had previously been root.qubes. Apparently
when you delete or rename a VM the logfiles are persistent so the
permissions would prevent any new VM from writing to that same file as
well.

In furthur testing I found that simply removing the file
/var/log/qubes/qubesdb.VMNAME.log would allow that VM to start correctly
even without renaming anything. It's clearly a file
ownership/permissions problem.

The one mystery left is how did the logfile permissions get messed up
during the restore process in the first place. Perhaps from running the
qvm-backup-restore as root? I don't remember doing that but its possible.

Don't need the log. This is one of those buggy Realteks. Assign your
card reader (04_00.0) to sys-net as well, and the ethernet controller
should work then.

[qubes-users] halfway to a certified hardware list

2019-06-03 Thread Philip Torrance
I notice that several models on the HCL
are no longer sold by the maker;
it might be more encouraging to new users
if the first column of the HCL spreadsheet
https://www.qubes-os.org/hcl/
was telling us about availability
(green: currently sold;
yellow: no longer made but available;
red: hard to find
). encourage people who test equipment
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/hcl/
to tell us where they got the machine if it tested well;
and then in the HCL's remarks columns
the more.link taking us to the report
will make it easy to find the retailer link.

Any suggestions about how we could keep this up-to-date? I imagine
that the first column would be almost uniformly green ("currently
sold") based on when the HCL report was first submitted, and I doubt
that anyone else would submit a PR to update the availability
of anyone else's report. Perhaps a handful of people would update
their own reports. (Likely the same handful who have updated their own
reports so far.)

This could certainly be done, but I'm puzzled why the retailer matters
if you already know the precise model of the machine. Surely that's
sufficient to find search for it online?

Its much more challenging to update the compatibility/problems status of
machines as time and users' experiences evolve. And I'd say that info is
more important.

I believe most viewers of the HCL can already glean a model's currency
by looking at the CPU generation. But if its desirable to make it easier
to discern, I think adding a simple Manufacture Date column would be
just as clear and far easier to administer.

The column could allow entering a date as either -MM or just .
The latter allows a list maintainer to estimate a model year if the
submitter hasn't supplied a date. The ordering (year first) allows
sorting without having to parse the input as an actual date.

[qubes-users] CentOS as Qubes v3.2 template moving forward?

2019-06-03 Thread siroccoride
Long term user of Qubes v3.2 as my daily driver (configured and customised with
i3 and happily so). Unable as yet to make the leap to v4 (because reasons).

With the EOL of Fedora 28 I got to thinking about v3.2 moving forward. Which
means (ignoring dom0 versions for now) what templates to continue using? I have
managed to upgrade a debian-9 template to 10 and all seems to be working (even
the update from Qubes-manager) so that will be part of my migration strategy. I
did see Chris' post on here about Qubes-tunnel VPN not functioning in 10 so
will eagerly wait for his updates (many thanks Chris).

I've just installed the CentOS 7 community template and am looking at that for
future use since it appears to be a LTS release. I attempted a "yum update"
which updated a huge chunk of the template but had to disable the Qubes repo
referenced as it was failing. Anyone else out there still on Qubes v3.2 and
maintaining a CentOS template? Can you let me know how you set the right repo
for the latest Qubes-specific updates? I did search this list but was unable to
find anything helpful. Other thoughts?

Cheers guys
