[qubes-users] Usability of Qubes Tools for Windows 10

2020-10-15 Thread Knut von Walter
Hi,
well I have read the documentation of installing Qubes Windows Tools
,link: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/windows-tools/ Especially the known
limitations of that software on, link:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3585 . Also I discovered
this video tutorial on you-tube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mGop1B-kqU . The author, Mr. Chris
Titus, of this video, which is from October 27th in 2019. Came to the
conclusion that it is at that moment not advisable to install Qubes
Tools for Windows.
Therefore I have this question: Do you think this issue changed in the
meantime? Or is it better to wait for some time until the team of Qubes
OS have programmed the necessary software. So that everything is running
smoothly.
Since I am not in a hurry to install Qubes Tools for Windows.
All advice is appreciated.
Thank you.
Best Knut von Walter

[qubes-users] Performance problems during video conference

2020-10-15 Thread John Dyne
I suffer performance problems, specially with the audio, during video
conferences (webex, zoom etc).

Since the default of audio_low_latency is true, what could be the problem?

First, thanks to Jarrah!
I inadvertantly booted my computer with my defucnt instalation plugged

regardless I was now able to use Jarrah's response to mount and copy
over most of the appvms (actually just mounted, tar'd up the entire
thing, and saved to trusted ext drive). Thanks Jarrah!

Nice work. Glad it worked out for you.

Caveat though, two actually, a few of the appvms gave errors, most of
them were not hugely important appvms but the second issue (kinda) is
about the possbility of copying the whole appvm, more specifically I
have some vpn proxy vms which (for me) wasnt easy to setup so I was
hoping to copy the whole appvm over to the new installation... I have
tar'd the entire contents/configs of each of those vpn proxy vms but
wasnt sure if that would be sufficient?

The /rw/config directory (just /config in the private image you copied)
should be enough, depending on how you configured it. You should be able
to make a new VM, overwrite its files with these and reboot. Your VPN
should "just come up".

Thanks, unfortunately though for teh VPNs its not working, in that i go
to something like ifconfig.co and it tells me i am ... well where I
actually am. Is there a way to diagnose this? Or maybe its time to use
the users contribution repo (or whatever it was called) as i noticed it
had a package to setup a vpn, though it was not clear to me if it was
taskett's version that had a kill swtich?

[qubes-users] qubes template centos-8 can not update: dependency-hell broken!

2020-10-15 Thread ludwig...@gmail.com
Hi the dependency hell of cubes-8 is broken because of special qubes tools
demanding
a package that was renamed, I guess.

but the python38-xcffib is needed by
qubes-gui-agent-4.0.30-1.centos8.x86_64!
So why cant it go with python3-xcffib!!?

Any Idea to solve this?

Cheers

[qubes-users] recording qubes-sessions e.g. videos

2020-10-15 Thread ludwig...@gmail.com
Hi all, I found a script to record cubes sessions, e.g. videos on
webbrowsers.
The problem is that it does not record the sound!
The media vm is based on debian10 template with a lot of stuff installed in
my case.

Any Idea to solve this? Here is the script that I collected from github.
The printf is for debugging.

user@media:~$ cat record_screen.sh
#!/bin/bash
#pass in alsa or pulse to record from sound device
IFS=$
#omit the top pixels to hide tabs and address bar
FIREFOX_Y_BUFFER=94
FIREFOX_X_BUFFER=2
if [[ ${1} =~ alsa ]] ; then
sound="-f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0"
printf "alsa sound"
fi
if [[ ${1} =~ pulse ]] ; then
sound="-f pulse -ac 2 -i default"
printf "pulse sound"
fi
echo $sound
output=`xwininfo`
width=`echo $output | grep Width: | awk '{print $2}'`
height=`echo $output | grep Height: | awk '{print $2}'`
topleftX=`echo $output | grep "Absolute upper-left X:" | awk '{print $4}'`
topleftY=`echo $output | grep "Absolute upper-left Y:" | awk '{print $4}'`
winid=`echo $output | grep "Window id:" | awk '{print $4}'`
window=`xprop -id $winid WM_CLASS`
window=${window##*WM_CLASS(STRING) = }
window=${window##*, }
window=${window//\"}
window=`echo $window | sed 's/:/_/g'`
if [[ ${window} =~ Firefox ]] || [[ ${window} =~ Icecat ]] ; then
topleftY=$(( ${topleftY} + ${FIREFOX_Y_BUFFER} ))
topleftX=$(( ${topleftX} + ${FIREFOX_X_BUFFER} ))
width=$(( ${width} - ${FIREFOX_X_BUFFER} ))
height=$(( ${height} - ${FIREFOX_Y_BUFFER} ))
fi
ffmpeg -video_size ${width}x${height} -framerate 25 -f x11grab -i
:0.0+${topleftX},${topleftY} ${sound} ${window}.mp4

[qubes-users] Re: Performance problems during video conference

2020-10-15 Thread 'b17b7bdb' via qubes-users
We had a similar problem that we were able to fix with ALSA. In the Dom0
terminal type "alsamixer" and check the Mic setting. Ours was originally set at
a level of zero (negative dB gain). Setting it to a level of 100 (dB gain of
12) fixed the problem for us.

[qubes-users] Re: Oryx Pro laptop (BOOTX64.cfg for Qubes 4.0.1)

2020-10-15 Thread load...@gmail.com
Hi,

I can open the .iso with "nano vim" but ultimately that doesn't get me to
> the config file /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.cfg that is described but not named in
> the following post.

If you trying to change .iso-file with via opening in 'vim' or any other
editor, then you don't need to search bootx64.cfg. You can just find those
lines which you need to edit via CTRL-F or other command for you editor to
find the lines which you need to change.

I'm also rather concerned why there are two "Original Installer ISO" files
> described here. Why doesn't he just list the filenames?

Actually I don't remember if there any 2 .iso-files. You could printscreen
this to clarify this moment.

I'm also having difficult saving files to the .iso
>

If you did the command:
'chmod u+w /path/to/file.iso'
and it didn't help you, then you can try to use any live-system of any
Linux system like Fedora/Ubuntu/Debian where it is worked always correctly
for me. For example at first time on Windows it did not worked for me, but
about month ago I tried the same Notepad++ on Windows and it worked. I
don't know what changed. I stopped looking for answers if something
concerns the Windows OS :)
