In Qubes the graphics card hardware acceleration is not exposed to the vms 
for security reasons 
(https://www.qubes-os.org/faq/#can-i-run-applications-like-games-which-require-hardware-acceleration).
So it is incorrect to blame Google for this.

Unfortunatelly when I turn off WebGL, everything starts to look pixelated 
and the image quality sucks. I wish Google allowed my graphics card to work 
instrad of my CPU. p.s. and yes, I also have 100% CPU load often. Same with 
YouTube. Google, come on, let graphics cards do the job!

Google Maps is like that everywhere else

I guess maybe it's just the fact that Qubes Manager allow you to see easily
how much they are ripping the memory and the processor that made you
realize this

I found a solution by disabling WebGL. There were errors in the console 
indicating that the operation executed by the page are slow.

It is possible to set webgl.disable to true in about:config.

Now it's acceptably slow :)

just tried. it was slower in the dvm, but cpu load was consistent. high when it 
was slow, low when it was fast or idle. 

i use chrome in other vms, and that was faster except for refreshes when 
firefox was faster. 

my laptop is a 2010 model maxed out at 8 gigs of ram with 12 vms running, so 
vim is the only app that runs fast on it.
