Thank you for offering help. In the end it turns out that my brain and fingers cannot unlearn years of i3/dmenu and I got increasingly frustrated. So I'll use KDE apps in i3 then. I must have messed my previous dom0 up before installing KDE. I had to fight all kinds of dependency issues. On a fresh R4.0.3 install everything works out of the box.
