you can try 'qvm-start-gui --all' first, to see if that helps; otherwise, your 
best bet is 'sudo xl console -t pv VMNAME'

Ok i can use xl to reach the console.

here are my findings.
if i attach to my "personal" domain using xl, log in as root and launch xterm 
from the console, i get the terminal window appearing on the desktop and 
everything works.

On the other end, if i do the same with whonix and try to run a graphical 
application, i get a "cannot open display" error, which suggests me that it 
cant connect to the x server? or the qubes services are not properly running in 
the VM?
