Try:

File <- file.path("c:", "know", "try.xlsx"); File
res <- read.xlsx(File, 2)

or

setwd("c:/know")
res <- read.xlsx("try.xlsx", 2)

try library(RODBC) and odbcConnectExcel2007; it has worked for me.
