Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] bass and treble adjustments?

2009-10-06 Thread andynormancx

If the Boom is a guide then lack of tone controls isn't likely to be an
issue on the Radio. With well designed speakers and clever DSP work it
doesn't feel the need to sound big and bassy. The tone controls on my
Boom stay centred.

Sure, I have it working that way already, no problems there. Just
wondering now is the baby should support local decoding of WMA Lossless
and WMA Pro or not?

Glad to hear it -- as it's unlikely I'd buy a Squeezebox radio without
some control over the tone.

I already own two small non-IP radios that deliver too much bass
(perhaps to produce a "big" sound) -- and don't like them for that
reason.

Glad I don't have to bring my laptop over. If he ever wants to hear
music from a local server, he'll probably ask me to help him set it up.
I will make sure that he won't use any SC version below 7.4.

Btw, I know that the Radio was recently released and is probably only
available online. We just walked into a couple Best Buys stores here in
NYC with my friend thinking that we would at least walk out with the
Boom, but no such luck. We took a long walk to B&H, but it was
closed Happy Succos!

Thanks everyone...

[SlimDevices: Radio] Options when Alarm Fires ?

2009-10-06 Thread eap

According to the wiki, you get 2 options when an alarm fires (snooze or
turn it off):

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay_7.4_Release_Notes#Alarm_Clock

Not sure I understand the 2nd option. Does turning off the alarm stop
the stream? What if you want the radio to continue to play whatever
stream or music the alarm was set for? In other words, does turning
off the alarm continue in, for lack of a better term, "normal" radio
mode, or does it go silent?

Just be aware that IF one does use a server afterwards that it needs to
have SBS 7.4 or higher on it. The Radio needs SBS 7.4 for local music.
And any Squeezebox that was on MySB would re-flash older firmware if
connected to less then SBS 7.4 after being on MySB.

The flash is probably good for over 1000 re-writes, but why fallback if
one doesn't have to.

Yes, you can use any of the Squeezeboxes without any server if you
like. If you use services like mp3tunes.com, you can even store your own
music there (for a fee, I think around US$40/year for 50GB) and access
that from you Squeezeboxes.

A few friends has Boom's since that launched and has never setup a SBS.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Is the Squeezebox server required for Setup?

2009-10-06 Thread tamanaco

A friend wants to get SQB Radio or maybe the Boom. Is the Squeezebox
Server required for the initial setup of either of these? He only has a
Nettop at home with very little storage space left in the SD card. So,
no room to install the Squeezebox server. I want to avoid having to
bring my laptop to his house to configure his Radio or Boom. Can the
initial configuration be done using just the Radio/Boom and a Web
browser to register it on SN? He just want to use the Squeezebox
Network for Pandora and a few foreign radio stations. He currently uses
the Nettop (which hangs at times) to listen streamed music using some
crappy external speakers.

Yeah, I was just comparing the wording difference - shipping soon
against not yet shipped.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox Radio sound quality from WMA Lossless

2009-10-06 Thread Terje

I got my first two Radio's delivered while at the office today. Just now
I got back home and connected the "baby" to SBS and powered it up.
However, I have serious sound quality issues. The Radio seems to have
big issues with playing a lot of my WMA Lossless based music connection.
I have the Boom sitting in the same spot and it plays everything just
fine, so does my SB3's. I've tried switching between to see if it could
be SBS related, but only the Radio struggle. I also checked the settings
to see if I had limited the rate for the Radio and was doing any
additional transcoding on SBS. No luck. The sound breaks up, crackles
and songs seems to run "slower" than they should. I've only tested a few
albums yet, but like 3 out of 4 shows the problem.

I ordered mine from logitech.no on September 29th and it arrived today.
Even on the 29th the site changed status all the time. Also on the Touch
and the battery/remote pack also appeared that day without any pictures.

No problem, just confused me because "surge" means too much of
something rather than too little :) Alarms will sound as long as it has
power from either the mains or the battery. I believe that network
outages are handled the same way as Boom, so that the next alarm will
still sound (but not subsequent ones) and it will use a buzzer if it
can't get to the configured file/stream.

Yes. Alarms are stored on the server (except the next scheduled one
which is also stored locally in case the network is lost).

All electronics can potentially be damaged by a power surge or
lightning strike. Use a surge protector. I don't know what a
"networksurge" is.

Yes. If you have the battery pack, you wouldn't even need power to be
on.

Not as good as the Boom IMHO, as the buttons aren't backlit. But
there's some light from the screen - certainly using the knob is no
problem.

Not sure. Some combo of standard options and custom button mappings can
probably do what you want.

I almost pulled the trigger on the red one last night in the logitech

[SlimDevices: Radio] Alarmclock on the move

2009-10-06 Thread Muele

So, I would like to get me a radio.
Primarily as a bedside alarmclock and nighttime music player.
But I will also be carrying it to the garage, outside etc. So that
brings up a bunch of questions. I will number then i order to ease
answering.

1. How does it handle being unplugged and replugged? I.E. does the
alarms I have set remain in place etc.
2. Similar to the above. How does it handle powersurges and
networksurges? Will it be able to wake me up in all cases (given
electricity is up at the time of awakening)?
3. How is it to control in pitch darkness?
4. How flexible are the preset-buttons? I would like to add A) a
sleep-timer-button since Logitech decided not to. B) All albums of a
given genre for my kindergarden kids to be able to put on kids-music
themselves (I don't think i can teach them to Browse genre - children,
roll to the buttom and select "all albums". Then they can choose by
looking at the familiar album art).
5. I know there is no snoozebutton, much to my regret. How is snoozing
and turning off the alarm done? How easy is it to do it wrong when half
asleep?
6. If I fall asleep, wearing headphones, will the alarm sound from the
speaker or just the headphones?

I probably have more questions but they escape me right now.
