Rather than using the Shoutcast directory on your SB, if you know the
direct URL to a station, you can use the SB web interface to enter that
URL directly. (if using MySB.com, you'll need to add a favorite and put
the URL there, then access it from your Favorites).

Thanks Andy. It doesn't sound like we will have ShoutCast in the near
future (if at all) but we appreciate you keeping the lines of
communication open with them.

For those that want to email ShoutCast as a listener that misses
ShoutCast on their SqueezeBox player go to http://www.shoutcast.com/,
then click Send Feedback.
Not sure this will do much, but it's worth 30 seconds to send them a
note as a SqueezeBox user.

Future alternatives Andy? Anything is better than nothing. :)
IceCast? IheartRadio? LiquidCompass? I am not familiar with any of
these so I do not know how they compare to ShoutCast.

What I really liked about ShoutCast on a SqueezeBox were four main
things:
1. Large selection of stations
2. Deep genre separation, they have over 300 genres
3. Most stations ere internet only, *NOT* rebroadcasts of terrestrial
AM/FM (we have RadioTime for those)
4. Bitrate Filter to filter out the lower kbps streams and duplicate
streams

Some of the time I get the backup alarm noise twice, the 2nd coming a

Some times I get no alarm at all (~5%)

So, it will wake me up about 95% of the time. My cheap travel alarm

the 5% failure rate. I often wonder why I keep using the radio alarm

that one day Logitech will fix it. If it were my product, it would
drive me crazy until it got fixed.

I run squeezebox server on a local PC that is always on, but from
reading the logs, I think that the sound clips are only on
MySqueezebox.com. I captured posted the logs in the slim bug system a
couple of times, but they appear to have been ignored.

Behavior seems to change with new sw releases, but never stabilizes. I
did have a run where it worked properly for a few weeks, but that ended
with one of the sw updates.

Does your statement quite reliably mean 100% reliable?

I had an issue using the built-in sound effects which are actually
served through MySB.com. I found a sound I like as an alarm, and have
as an MP3 on my local SBS, and have had basically 100% reliability
since using that sound as my alarm instead of the sound effects.

Sadly must agree with the consensus here - but the stupidity of it it
makes me weep.

The radio is so clearly marketed as a bedside radio/alarm and it could
have had mass market appeal - had it not failed so abysmally at this
one basic function. I know it's an awesome network music player, and
I'd love to recommend it to friends family - but for the the alarm's
failings.

WHY, LOGITECH, WHY ? How much effort could it really take ?

The irony is that the alarm is 99% reliable for me, thanks mainly to a
local SBS server (ReadyNas) and Erland's custom plugins. But I'm now
too terrified of updating the SBS software (currently 1.5.0) for fear
of de-stabalising the alarm.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Questions Regarding Alarm

2011-01-04 Thread virgiliomi

Actually, I bought a Radio so it can sit on my desk at work and play
music, rather than for an alarm clock. I didn't want the larger size of
the Boom, and I'm not playing it real loud, so Stereo isn't an issue.
Plus I like to see the album art as well, and the weather screensaver
(add-on applet) when not playing music is also nice.

I have a Boom at home in my bedroom, and it works great as an alarm
clock on my local SB Server. However, if it comforts anyone here, when
using MySB on my Boom, the alarm is definitely less reliable (I don't
think it's quite as bad as some here are having with the Radio, but
I've certainly had my issues with it).

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Questions Regarding Alarm

2011-01-04 Thread bluegaspode

I belong to those that - with the help of a local server - has 99,5%
reliable alarms.
I'm waking up every day for work to a radio stream I configured.
Only in 1% of cases I hear the fallback alarm.

As I'm one of those who has deep insights into the alarm code I also
trust it's fallback mechanism a lot.
I think not waking up to some sound is not an issue - it's rather
waking up to the wrong sound (i.e. the fallback alarm) that is annoying
people. The Radio is very strict in starting the fallback alarm - tiny
network glitches or problems with the alarm streams (this includes the
'inbuilt' sounds, that are streamed from MySB.com) cause the fallback
to sound.

Here are the most important things for a working reliable alarm:

- use a local server - it will trigger the alarm reliable at the
right time (except on days when daylight saving times change and your
  server is not configured correct).
Using MySB.com introduces unreliableness for the alarm trigger
- don't have your server do heavy stuff (like backups) at alarm
  time
- don't use 'inbuilt' sounds. These are streamed from MySB.com,
which might not be considered reliable for streaming the sounds (Just
think of how many people have their alarm scheduled at even hours -
and all those users start to stream the same file at the same time).
Download the file if needed and install it as local mp3.
- don't use BBC streams. In another thread we realized, that these
change their streaming URLs at certain times every day. This leads to
a dropout of audio for about two seconds = and the fallback alarm
will sound. If you alarm is around one of those times you will hear
  the fallback every day.
- always (!) configure your alarm via the Radio. Don't use the WebUI
or the iPhone or iPad-Apps. Only configuring the alarm directly on the
Radio ensures, that it has a proper connection to the server and knows
the alarm time to properly setup the fallback alarm.
If the alarm is only configured on the server, you will never know if
it was synchronized to the Radio at least once.

This seems like a long list - but all points are very easy to follow
(except setting up a local server - but the original poster wanted to
do that anyway).

There are even other workarounds available on this forum if things are
still not working (like installing your own fallback mp3 directly on
the Radio if you don't like the inbuilt sound or changing the volume of
the fallback alarm).

So while the alarm might not be easy to make reliable without the
background knowledge - people with a local server definitely should not
fear the alarm feature.
Also there are at lot of people willing to help in this forum.

Oh - and what did I have to read about iPhones? They didn't sound their
alarms from 1st to 3rd January for many users? How unreliable ... we
should start a class action against Apple ;)

Of course, if the iPhone was built by Logitech, they (and the fanboys)
