Yeah, you are missing all kinds of UI info like description of each plugin, dependencies to other plugins, author and contact links, etc.. I am experiencing the same problem Previous week i reinstalled Squeezeboxserver, and got an update for my radio. Since then the alarm kicks in at full (alarm) volume. kloach, my problem started about six weeks ago after I lost my connection with squeezebox.com. Just like you, I muse that something in the settings caused the radio not to show artwork after it rebooted. I tried restoring the radio to factory settings, it didn't work. I tried the restore too, but no luck. I lost mine around new year's day.
