Ah yes. Kids have both discovered that endless source of amusement. In
fact if I was competent to write a plugin, it would be one which allowed
you to restrict which players can control which streams.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Is it right for kids?

2012-02-14 Thread Hobgoblin

I've got a 9 11 year old. I bought a Radio for them to share about a
year ago. It was getting so much use (and causing the odd argument
about who's turn it is and so on) that I bought a second one.

I already had a Duet, so they were familiar with the menu system etc.
But it hadn't take them long to pick that up anyway. As others have
said, our musical tastes diverge, so they use Spotify and IP radio more
than my music collection. The Radio supports the official Logitech
Spotify plugin; I much prefer Triode's for usability, but the official
one has the benefit that they can each listen to a different stream
simultaneously.

I restructured my library slightly - all my artists / albums / tracks
were under a single 'music' folder. I've now just got three redirects
from a top level folder to individual folders for me and each child.
Then I export each of our folders as separate Samba shares - so if they
buy music from Amazon it downloads to their own folder.

As others suggest I've created a favorites folder each.

Just finished doing a factory reset on my daughter's radio - that's the
most maintenance it's needed so it's all been fairly painless. Apart
from what they actually listen to... damn, I just turned into my own
parents...

Radio arrived today. Straightforward set up, plugged in, gave it the
wifi password, it patched itself a couple of times, and that was it.

I'd say the sound is impressive for the size of box, certainly adequate
for casual listening in a bedroom.

Daughter is delighted, now son wants one too.

wow - that was quick.

Thanks for all replies. Not one dissenting voice - so Radio it is then.
Only £101 on Amazon, so might just sort that out today.

Only downside I can see is that I'll get even less access to my Spotify
stream than I do today. :-(

4?? Kudos - I'd be well on the way to divorce if I bought 4.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Radio or other?

2011-03-17 Thread Hobgoblin

Hi - I'm running a couple of receivers and a controller off an Ubuntu
hosted SBS. My daughter (10) loves it, especially access to Spotify,
and is now angling after her own squeezebox player for her room.

Possible solutions would be an SB Radio; a Boom; or I could buy a Touch
for myself and let her have one of the Receivers with some powered
speakers.

At the moment, my favourite is the Radio, although I've no idea what
the sound is like - seems very small and it's only mono. But it has the
familiar UI, and for a bedroom I think the sound should be adequate. Her
room is about 10 feet from the router, so signal should be good.

Anything I ought to think of which I haven't? And what's the sound
like?

Thanks for any advice.
