About as useless an answer as CBS. Either they don't get it, don't want
to get it or are making some attempt to wring money out of something
that they think they can wring money from. They won't and will lose
many listeners. So very stupid, clueless, foolish Which one or
all?

Have you guys tried 1130 am out of NYC? It's Bloomberg radio out of NYC
and is on tunein.

I think there is a way to extract the stream from the flash player on
the BBR site, hoping someone w/more skills will see this and might help
you out with this.

I don't think you can assign standby to one of the preset buttons. Pick
any of the black buttons, pick long or short press of that button.
AFAIK that is the closest you can get.

Can the same be done for sleep function?

Yes, I didn't think of doing the search as you did, for the blind. I
think for now dad prefers to read the foreign papers (online) himself,
will have to have him listen to the reader services and see if he feels
he can absorb the news as well or better.

He always had a very broad world when he was more active / able so I'm
glad to see that he is indeed taking to some of what I have been
tossing at him and in some ways opening things back up a bit for him.

He was a bit freaked out the first time I started changing the streams
on him (to see what he thought of the Sanskrit broadcast) from my house
using the computer remote application. I told him I could do it but it
still freaked him when I actually did it. He jokingly asked, since I
could monitor what he was listening to, if it had a camera so I could
watch him also.

Thanks mpower9.

I had not found either of the newspaper reading sites.

Did know about the NYT podcasts, reminds me of hearing my parents
listening to tomorrows front page stories from the NY Times on WQXR
when I was young, not sure WQXR does that anymore since they are no
linger the radio station of the NY Times and now are part of WNYC,
the NYC NPR affiliate.

I'll have to add the VT public radio classical stream.

Thanks for the suggestion re checking each newspaper site. I may have
to recruit another family member to check some of the foreign language
ones that I don't read / understand.

After buying a kill-a-watt meter I was amazed at the vampire draw in
my house when I added it all up (even the washer and dryer have idle
draw). Now when we will be away for more than the day I take 2 min. and
unplug stuff / turn off power strip switches / turn off wall switches /
turn off breakers. When I look at year to year comparison power use it
is actually noticeable. Our power company also send power use report
cards which mainly (anonymously) compares usage among similar houses
in the area and lets you know how your use compares to your neighbors
and there is a noticeable change there also.

Wow. Quite amazing, thank you for the suggestions and the link.

I have to let him explore what he has (that I set up) already bit by
bit and get used to it all.

Just tonight he commented that this idea of limitless choice is not
something that my generation is used to or always comfortable with
I'll explore it a bit and toss it at him at some point.

At this point he seems more interested in all the (classical) music
that it is possible to listen to, I thought he would be more interested
than he seems in the foreign news broadcasts but it seems he became used
to reading foreign news / newspapers on his computer as the SW news he
used to listen to disappeared. We'll see, and sadly there will come a
time when it won't be a preference but will be a question of which
diminishes more, sight or hearing, which will determine what may be
easier for him to do.

Are there pod-casts of daily papers being read? I probably should
search around myself but if there are one or two main go-to places for
them I would love to get that info.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Power on issue?

Yes, besides the fact that my dad didn't want to worry about maintaining
a roof mast antenna for FM fringe station reception and a long line SW
antenna anymore he complained that a lot of the overseas shortwave
frequencies/stations he liked had gone, replaced by religious or
left/right fringe ideologue broadcasts.

I got him exposed to some of what is out there re internet radio on his
computer and he seemed interested and amazed re the variety and
availability of some of what he used to listen to. He is fluent in 3 or
4 languages and passable/can follow broadcasts in 3 or 4 more and he
knows a few (ancient) languages that no one broadcasts in (there aren't
any Sanskrit broadcasts are there?). I'm really happy that this is
opening his world back up a bit.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Power on issue?

2011-06-27 Thread redrotors

Hi, I bought a squeezebox radio for my elderly dad. I set it up, set
presets and favorites, a short press button (more) to the favorites
etc. and generally familiarizing myself with it before giving it to
him. I then set it up at his place after gifting it to him and there is
an annoying change since I was using it at my place and I can't figure
out what I did or how to make it act like it did at first when I set it
up and used it at my place. It is and will be used solely for listening
to radio stations. When powering on it used to go to the last station
playing and start playing it. When I set it up at his place powering on
now goes to the home screen and then if you click now playing it goes
to the last station played but it is stopped (little square symbol on
screen) and you have to hit the play button to get the stream to
start.

So, how do I get the radio to just play the last stream/station it was
playing when powered off w/o having to hit any buttons when it powered
back on?

Not using SBS. As I mentioned this will be my elderly dad just using it
for internet radio listening. I am new to this so please correct me if
I am wrong but using SBS to do this as you suggest would involve
downloading it to a computer on his network and then running SBS all
the time, correct? That is just not going to happen. If I am wrong and
I can do this as a one time set it and forget it job then I would
give it a try.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Power on issue?

2011-06-27 Thread redrotors

Well thanks for giving me the possible options guys. Appreciate it. Dad
is the type that wants it off off (not standby) when he is not in the
room so he is not a fan of standby. He is willing to wait out the
boot-up every time, back to the future he said, like having one of his
old tube amps. all over again.

So you are saying that what I experienced at first (at power on playing
of last station resumed) was not normal behavior? Hm I swear
that is what it was doing. I thought I messed up a factory or default
setting somehow?

I was contemplating a complete reset to factory and then reprogramming
presets, favorites, shortcut button etc. but it sounds like that would
just be a waste of time?

When a complete reset of the radio is done does it wipe out the
stations in my favorites on mysqueezebox.com or are they preserved
there and then reloaded to the radio?

It would be nice to have the option of automatic resume of the last
playing upon power on w/o having to use SBS. I understand how mikael b
finds default useful but for my dad play auto resume would be better.

I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. He told me this eve. that
he is leaving it in standby (leaving the clock on) and says he is
getting used to having to hit play or a preset.

I was a bit worried because he seemed annoyed with the extra bother

behaving a bit differently.

Anyway, thanks for responding guys, appreciate it, it's tough watching
