Typical clocks? That is absolutely not true at all. Typical alarm
clocks have a battery backup, even the cheapest ones you can find at
Wallyworld. I have an old Sony Dream Machine radio from the mid-90's
that doesn't even have a battery. It charges up an internal capacitor
to store a charge and it works flawlessly with no power to it. Still
use it to this day.

I didn't have any alarms active so I don't know if that affects things.

Yes, this really is a shame (that and the fact I can't get a battery in
Canada!)

Maybe they would consider adding this functionality? It's only software
after all. Some sort of toggle setting which says to keep the radio
'alive' if the power goes out but there is some charge remaining in the
battery.

Good question. Does the software treat a radio with an alarm set to go

ALTHOUGH, I believe if you plug-in a radio which is turned OFF it will
turn ON- at least that's been my experience. So my expectation is
that if your Radio is plugged in and you lose power, that after 20
minutes it may turn OFF to conserve battery, but then if power is
restored it will turn back on.

In my experience, typical bedside alarm clocks (clock radios) are
plugged in. If the power is out for the house, no alarm goes off. The
SB radio is not really different in that way.

However, I've found SB radio to be better than my old clock radio,
which would revert to blinking 12:00 AM after power was restored (and
the alarm time would revert to 1:00 AM). So then I would manually have
to reset the time and the alarm time.

Now, if power goes off and then back on in the middle of the night, my
PC reboots automatically, squeezebox server starts when my PC boots, and
my SB radio then displays the correct time and the alarm fires as
previously set. Much better than before.

Adjusting Sound Effects Volume is universal, however you can select
which sound effects are active and which are not.

ex: you can turn OFF sound effects for Navigation (intro music and
menu *bleeps*), but turn ON sound effects for Charging etc...

Nope, my Bose has a 9v battery that is used for a wakeup 'beep' during
a power loss. Many inexpensive alarm clocks also have this.

Thanks, Chunkywizard. My problem was that I did not know which of the
choices actually turned the boot sound off. None of them sounded
particularly applicable. I ended up trying them all. Disabling the sound
for Charging turned out to do the job (who knew?). However, now that I
have ordered the battery pack, I hope that rebooting for power loss will
no longer be a problem, nor will all the other alarm unreliability
variables.

Problems with alarm you will have, when the network or server is
unreliable.

Say that your router didn't properly reboot after a power outage, or
the radio is faster booting than your router not getting a proper IP
...

You were just lucky I'd say that in your circumstances you didn't face

[SlimDevices: Radio] Power Outage and Alarm Reliability

2010-02-22 Thread mpower9

There has been much commentary about the unreliability of the alarm
function so I just thought I would report. Last night while I was asleep
the power went out at my house (I know because when I got up all the
electronic clocks in the house had to be reset.) Since my radio (FW
7.4.1) has no battery back up, it also lost power.

As soon as the power came back on, it booted up. (How do I know? It
gave a triumphant doddle-dee-do-dee-do that woke me up in the middle
of the night. That, I could have done without. In my befuddled state, I
did not realize the power had been out, I just thought it was the Radio
exhibiting of some of its famous bugginess.)

In the morning, you will be delighted to know, the alarm went off
exactly as expected. Three cheers for reliable radio.
