[SlimDevices: Radio] Simple EQ?

2012-06-30 Thread jannej

I am looking for a simple treble and bass EQ for adjusting. Is there any
plugin available? Is the CPU too weak for handling an eq?

Regards, Jan

Running local lms? If so on what OS/computer. More specifics would be
helpful.

Sorry, let me clarify myself:

I am using Squeezebox Radio streaming Internet radio via a Wifi-network
(which works great) like a "standalone" device. I am not using any
server set up. I read in older posts that an EQ was eventually/maybe
planed in a future update of the firmware.

All I would like is little less treble, on some channels voices tend to
sound a bit harsh.

Thanks for your prompt reply!

Too bad. A simple EQ would be a nice feature to implement, I know people
are looking for this. The device on it self sounds very balanced, but
some radio stations are not "balanced.

Agreed - a little extra bass and quite a bit of extra treble makes the
Boom sound perfect IMO (that's how I've always set up every audio device
- personal preference). The Radio doesn't match it I'm afraid. Does
anyone know if the Boom's tone controls are implemented through hardware
or software?

AFAIU, the Boom EQ-ing (and other sound processing) is done with a DSP
which is controlled via the firmware. I'm not aware of the Radio having
a DSP like that.

Yes I think there is some kind of dsp hardware chip in Boom italso does
the xover , radio is simpler would be able run that in fw .

They could have included dirt cheap good old analog tone controls on
radio ? that would have made most sense in that kind of device .

The clever Logitech DSP all seems to happen through alsa plugin(s), I
think. I could be wrong. Ideally we would be given another, dirt cheap,
EQ plugin to add into the chain. Could it be that simple ?

A couple of months ago I formed the conclusion that the hardware
codec/amplifier/thingummy could be induced to do some filtering. Just a
matter of figuring good DSP filter values to load up, and into which
chip registers to load them. Looks like it could be done from the
command line (amixer) as the registers appeared to have been exposed to
view (De-Emphasis Filters). It's a while since I looked, but I don't
think memory is playing tricks on me. Existing software seemed to be
leaving them untouched. Of course, it could ruin all the good work done
by Logitech's DSP !

My goal would be to add a simple bass unboost button to quell boomy
baritone announcers. But it's not going to happen for a while unless
someone else does it. There'd be some intricacies around switching to
and from headphones, etc., because the chip's input & output is mapped
differently from normal speakers.

So that's the programme... but no start date specified. :)

A server plugin is alway possible :)

The existing ones are inguz, wich does not seem to be maintained
anymoore and I'm unsure about it's support for other OS than win ? Not
user friendly ,complex .

Then some are using brutefir , which seems really geeky .

A simple eq plugin would be a real success .

That will only help those with a local server thou , afaiu the radio
itself does not have a built in DSP ( boom has ) and the CPU can simply
not run any high quality filters .

I got Inguz to work on my Win7 PC, but it was a bit of work.

And Inguz is brilliant when it works. So I believe that a user-friendly
install wizard and a front-end for Inguz would have been better than a
brand new EQ plugin, in many ways.

But I don't know how reliable it would be possible to make it.

But the codec chip does have some accessible filter controls that might
be employable in a simple way. I figured out (can't remember how) that
it is a Texas Instruments TLV320AIC3104. I don't know what variant.

As proof of concept I fired up ssh, figured out (yet again) how to use
'amixer', and dug out the datasheet.

To read the current state of the Audio Codec Digital Filter Control
Register:

Code:

amixer sget 'Audio Codec Digital Filter Control'

Output therefrom:

Code:

Simple mixer control 'Audio Codec Digital Filter Control',0
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 255
  Mono: 0 [0%]

As you see, mine returns value '0', i.e. all off. I assume that this the
standard, default, configuration of the Radio.

To turn on each DAC's Digital Effects Filter Control:

Code:

amixer sset 'Audio Codec Digital Filter Control' 10

To turn off - back to defaults:

Code:

amixer sset 'Audio Codec Digital Filter Control' 0

I can hear it act as the default filters are switched in and out.

So my programme now advances one step further:

a) Figure out values for the Digital Effects Filter that will give
useful adjustments.
b) Figure out how to engage/disengage them on demand.

(a) Requires a bit of education on how to calculate filter values.

(b) An installable applet. Perhaps suborn the volume control mute action
into doing a little more than just 'mute'.

I think something may be doable, provided it's kept simple and not
required to be perfect under all conditions.

Its a filter that is built into the audio codec chip.
http://www.ti.com/product/tlv320aic3104

Logitech(?) thoughtfully provided access to the chip's control functions
through its Linux driver. Or, at least, some of them.

I have no great knowledge of these things, but they typically offer
themselves as 'solutions' for low power audio devices, and have a number
of built-in processing paths for inputs and outputs, volume control,
equalization & sound effects, etc.

The Radio seems to use one channel of the chip to drive the bigger
speaker and the other channel to drive the smaller speaker. Use of
headphones would, I think, switch back to a 'regular' stereo
configuration.

Hey Soulkeeper, how did you get Inguz EQ to work?? I have been playing
around with the InquzDSP.exe and the EQ installation and I cannot seem
to get it to work on my win7 at all. I can access the EQ controls but
they just don't impact the sound and i know inquzDSP.exe is not running
as a process. It doesn't seem to want to start up...?

Quite frankly, I will have to return my squeezebox if I cannot get it to
work with EQ. My goal is to have it hooked up directly to a hi-quality
wireless headphones set from Sennheiser (RS 220). When comparing it to
my Asus Audio Essence ST card with build in DSP the squeezebox sounds
just so flat and not worth the money. I am really stressing out about
this because I am trying to set this up for my dad retirement gift, and
now I guess the best I can do is give him the headphones hooked up
directly to the PC and hope the range is good enough to transmit the
signal two floors :/

ANY help is greatly appreciated...

I shall certainly vote. I would certainly like to see some kind of bass
cut capability, and the OP looks for treble cut, too.

In the meantime I shall quietly tinker with a few digital filters and
see if the chip based solution is likely to be viable. It would be
somewhat ad hoc.

He he the OP is me for that bug , I was just amazed that they omitted
tone controls when the Squeezebox BOOM had it, that and a real snooze
button and backlit buttons ? they know how to do such a device and then
they don't ?

Hopefully they eventually do brain surgery on the boom design and design
a similar device but with squeezeos/squeezeplay capable cpu and color
display

I've never seen a Boom. I do think the Radio sound quality is very good,
without tone controls, and I am very content with it. It's really only a
few programme sources that I think could be improved. And an anti 'I've

Yeah, I've been scratching my head over that too. The Radio is a good
device in my experience & opinion, but cutting out those three
functions..? I understand that all of them would increase the price, but
as it is, the Radio is neither fish nor fowl.

Resurrecting an old thread here, but I've got a somewhat similar
situation. I've re-purposed an old Squeezebox 2 to our sunporch and
have a pair of small advent indoor/outdoor speakers driven by a T-Amp.
It drives two pairs - one pair in the sunporch, and another pair out on
the deck. The sound is decent for our own material, but often times the
source material from internet radio is stripped of any bass content.
I'd love to be able to boost up the warmth a bit. This is just
background music, so I'm not concerned about any audiophile concerns.
;-)

Any ideas at all? I guess it would be easiest to switch out the T amp
with one that has bass and treble controls. Pyle has some mini-amps
that have these via PartsExpress.

One way of filtering would be to invoke an extra SoX command in
custom-convert.conf, with the appropriate filter parameters. Then you'd
first have to experiment a bit to find suitable filter parameters, so it
won't work if you need to be able to change it on the fly.

If you're on Linux you could use the plugin BrutefirDRC, or just
BruteFIR raw. Same amount of experimentation needed.

But yeah, replacing the amp would be easy. And it enables instantaneous
change.

2014-06-17 Thread Apesbrain

I'm not an expert on usage of SoX but I think the contents of the
custom-convert.conf file would look something like this and the file
goes in the same folder on your server as your convert.conf file.

Code:

  mp3 flc * *
  [sox] -t mp3 $FILE$ -t flac - bass +6 250

  wma flc * *
  [sox] -t wma $FILE$ -t flac - bass +6 250

Set up this way it only affects MP3/WMA (e.g. radio streams). Play with
the boost (set at 6 in example above) and center frequency (set at
250Hz). If you want to have this change be specific only to that
player, switch out the second * with the MAC address of that unit.

My 0.02$ simple Eq makes sense in self contained systems like boom or
radio .

but not in other source components ? No one argues that a CD player
should have EQ , th rigth place is in the speakers or amp .

Corner case one source systems like secondary squeezbox systems with not
so good speakers or acoustics .

Then it would be very welcome if someone designed an easy to use plugin
for this , the hard part would be sync of players the eq processing
would probably cause delays .
