[SlimDevices: Radio] Some issues and suggestions

2009-10-13 Thread 0xdeadbeef

I got my Radio today and played around with it the last 1-2 hours. All
in all I think it meets (or will meet) my expectations, but I have some
issues and suggestions already.

1) While it is very easy to add the currently playing radio station (or
app) to one of the preset buttons, I found it impossible to add a
playing station/app to the list of favorites. This seems to be only
possible if you select a radio station via the menu. Therefore I
couldn't add Last.fm to the favorites, while I could set it to a preset
button. Most probably this is also the reason why I can't use Last.fm
for an alarm if I program the alarm via MySqueezebox.com. I can only use
it for an alarm if I connect to my Squeezebox Server, but I'd like to
use the Radio without the Server most of the time.

2) There is obviously no way (at least not via MySqueezebox.com) to
edit the menus as this is possible for the Squeezebox Classic. I'd like
to remove some of the entries I never use and add others just as with my
Squeezebox.

3) I didn't manage to get an alarm without the repeat/disable alarm
menu. I'd like a way to control this and e.g. select what is shown when
an alarm is raised (e.g. clock screen saver, currently playing and
repeat/disable menu).

4) I'd like more view options. E.g. a currently playing view with a
larger clock or a lock/date view with a a third of the screen used for
currently playing info. There should be also a way to switch with one
keypress between different views. Generally, customizing the views
(font size etc.) should be possible.

5) While the dimming works pretty well already, I'd appreciate an
automatic dimming between two manually selected min/max values. There
should be also a qay to quickly increase the brightness in dimmed mode.
E.g. when the Radio is looking at a dark wall, but beyond the radio is
a light source, the display is so dark that it's barely readable. Since
the knob is not used at all in the screensaver modes, why not use if for
brightness control (manual offset to the value determined by the
automatic dimming).

Lack of menu customization is a problem, but it is getting some
attention. If you're interested, see 'Bug 14004'
(https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14004), and even vote for
it. You may be glad to know that customization via MySB appears to be
central to these plans.

For now, if you use SbS you can control what items appear on the Home
Menu via Settings Home Menu on the SB Radio menus. It's not as
customizable as what's available for the IP3K devices (incl Classic),
and it's not available via MySB, but it's what exists now.

wish you could have much more control over the dimming. As
it stands, I find that it is too bright during the day and too dark at
night.
