I'm just entering the Squeezebox-world. At first i would like to have a
mobile unit and the radio is a little bit cheaper. I think i will get
more units later! For the beginning (and testing) the headphone-out will
work.

Thanks

I got lucky... I got a brand new Squeezebox Classic on eBay for UNDER
$200 after shipping! Typically even the slightly used ones had been
going for a bit over $210 so I got a great deal. Can't wait to give it
to her for christmas :-)

Hello and Welcome to the Forum. This isn't exactly answering your
question, but if you need a line level out, I say get a line level out
by using a Receiver, Classic, or wait for the Touch. And if using a line
out or line in, I say go with the Boom. It is a better stand alone unit
and more versatile in my opinion then the SB Radio.

Airport express with iPod touch remote app would be good, if all that
is needed is to play itunes music and a few internet radio streams,
although I don't think it covers everything the OP wants, specifically
Pandora. The other big drawback to Airport express IMO, is that you
can't use multiple airport expresses to play independent streams in
different locations from the same library. I know this wasn't a
requirement that the original poster mentioned, but it's important to
note.

I don't believe that the headphone output from the SB radio can be
switched to line-out, like the boom can. Although that would be nice, it
isn't strictly necessary, and sound quality would be quite good, if
plugged into an aux/in on a receiver, or pair of powered speakers, so
long as the volume level at the radio is set at an appropriate level and
left there.

You can use the Squeezebox Radio to connect to a stereo, you just need
the right cable to get you RCA out from the headphone jack. The sound
quality will be fine.

It is the cheapest option at the moment at < $180, so unless you could
find a receiver or classic on ebay it seems like a good way to go.

The SB Radio only has a headphone output, so if won't do what you
want.
Here's the product list:

No... the house is pretty huge and the iMac is downstairs. I need a
wireless streaming device to output to the speakers as well as play
pandora, hence my using iPeng to control her squeezebox receiver. The
receiver can't be bought individually right now so i'm considering using
an SB Radio with audio-out to power the household speakers. My question
was about audio quality, not system capabilities.

Then I think that all you need to do is install Squeezebox Server
v7.4.1 on the iMac and stream wirelessly to the SB Radio.

Unless there are new features I haven't found yet, iPeng doesn't "Play"
Music, it controls Squeezebox Players. It sounds like she needs a
Receiver, SB3, or Touch to send the music to a stereo. If no stereo and
needs a unit that can actually produce sound, then a Squeezebox Boom or
SB Radio.

Why would anybody buy an SB Radio to run the headphone out into a
stereo when it can play music on its own? Might as well run the the iMac
audio out to a stereo and use iTunes.

Her music - will be served by the iMac in the house on the network. No
need for the touch. She can use iPeng. Needs to be an xmas gift too.

Are you trying to play her music, or just internet radio? If her music
files, you might like the Squeezebox Touch, but it won't be released
until late Jan `10

[SlimDevices: Radio] Using the SB Radio as a replacement for the SB Receiver

2009-12-09 Thread hungarianhc

Hi there,

I was going to set my parents up with a Squeezebox Receiver for
christmas, as my mom is getting an iPod Touch, and I was going to set
her up with iPeng to play all of her music across the house (I have it
and love that solution). However, it seems as though the receiver can no
longer be found online. So I'm considering just getting a SB Radio. Only
thing is that the connection will have to be a 3.5mm to red/white
converter cable for the sound, and I want to make sure that will sound
okay - doesn't need to be audiophile quality, but I still want it to be
good. I appreciate the feedback. Thanks!
