I am guessing that the buffer is a feature of sort.

It helps to smooth out network flows do that there are no gaps
especially when playing live radio. The size of the buffer is under
your control - see the Mysb.com Player / Network/ Radio station buffer
size.

If the buffer is not full then to fill the buffer will depend on the
station bit rate and whether it is a live station or not. If a user is
playing a podcast or a Listen Again program this buffer will be filled
within secs but for a slow live station, the network activity will
continue for a few minutes.

Also consider once buffer is full there will be network activity
keeping the link alive as some data will be unacknowledged. So most of
the last few minutes of activity will just be small TCP packets.

Power off with Squeezboxes is not like an FM radio - it just changes
the screensaver. The current network behaviour probably stems from the
fact that players mainly played local media and network traffic was no
an issue as well as in N. America mostly there were no volume charges
for data.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Internet Traffic After SB OFF

2010-09-23 Thread Ron Stordahl

I think what you are suggesting is that pause is working as expected,
however when taping the power button the connection should be
terminated.

My prior response was to give an explanation for what you were
observing.

Continuing to buffer when pausing but immediately terminating the
connection when powering down seems sensible to me. I was surprised to
discover it didn't work that way.

You do have to maintain the connection to mySB (or SBS) for control,
but that is modest compared to the streaming traffic.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Internet Traffic After SB OFF

2010-09-22 Thread TJ_

Where's the problem? It wastes bandwidth, both at my end and at the
radio station. But more importantly, if I turn off the Radio, go
downstairs and turn my Roku SoundBridge on to the same station, I don't
want to be pulling two streams at the same time from di.fm. The station
detects that and shuts you down.

On and Off used to be such simple concepts...

Then there's Pause and Mute. If both make the audio stop but both keep
streaming data which goes into the bit bucket, what's the difference?
(BTW I did remap Mute to Stop, thanks to a forum member's helpful
suggestion using a beta feature.)

When I un-pause my Roku, it takes a moment to re-connect to the station
because Pause truly stopped the stream. I have absolutely no problem
waiting a second for that.

What happens now ?

Does it still buffer the stream , it might still use bandwith for it's

I just don't see the issue here...what's the big deal if you get a few
mins of internet traffic...do you pay by the kilobyte? I wish I had the
time to go down to my router and modem and analyze the traffic going
through it when I turn things on and off.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Internet Traffic After SB OFF

2010-09-22 Thread Ron Stordahl

I am running dd-wrt firmware in a wrt54gl which has a page displaying
graphically the wireless traffic. From this it is clear that the
SBRadio continues buffering the station you were listening to after
tapping the power button to turn off. The same occurs when you pause
the radio. The buffer is apparently quite large as this goes on for a
long time. When you resume the audio picks up exactly where you paused
or 'powered down'. Eventually however the buffer apparently fills and
the tcp connection is closed. The buffer is then dumped...as it should
be.

The approach the designers have taken seems sensible to me.

No, it's not just a housekeeping connection. It's full-on streaming of
audio content (those router lights are in full blink mode) for a few
extra minutes after hitting the theoretical Power button.

The workaround (and the Radio is all about workarounds) is to Stop the
stream before tapping Power. You can do this by holding down Pause for
a second or two.

(Some day I will get around to asking why there are two Pause buttons -
one called Mute but appearing to function identically to Pause - but no
Stop button. But there are bigger mysteries about the Radio...)

Mute is to mute volume, Pause do pause a stream. What is the difference
between a stopped and a paused digital audio stream? On your local
library is no difference and remote streams like radio will stop after
a while.
