Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
Hello Michael, >Or in other words: if the clock is not set, screensavers are disabled. This I understand now, but I have to admit that it took some time for me to realise this. An average non-techy user will not be able to find out why the screensavers don't show, and in that case a simple message on the screen might be helpful. But then of course, an average user will not use beta firmwares. The reason I got a different server version vs. firmware version on the Radio was because I disabled automatic checking of available updates in the server software. Now I know that I should not do that any more. >The above behaviour is by design. But if the clock doesn't get set, then there's something wrong (connectivity?). Yes, that I fear also. The radio is however playing songs from the server, so it is connected to it. Could I verify if the clock gets set one way or the other? I could e.g. force a clock offset through the commandline. Would that be a good test? When should the internal time of the radio be correct again? Is it synced hourly/daily/...? >It should. What version are you using? Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
Hello, connecting to mySB.com solved the problem of the internal clock not being set. This means that the screensavers are now displayed again as expected. Conclusion: if the screensavers refuse to show, possibly the internal clock of the radio is not set. This happened for me after the Radio was not connected to mains for 4 days in combination with the fact that it was configured to connect to a local SB server. It is not clear to me if this is a bug or not. A suggestion to the developers: show a message on the screen of the Radio that the clock is not set instead of just not showing the screensavers. What remains unclear: now the Radio is again connected to my local SB server, but will the internal clock be synced or not? I'll keep an eye on it the next weeks to see if it drifts or not. -- hollie hollie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30753 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74603 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
the radio has the rdate command so if you ssh into the radio you can run, e.g. rdate -s rdate.cpanel.net -- albright albright's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35256 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74603 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
Hello Felix, with 'time is still off' I mean 'not set at all'. I'll give it a try by connecting to mysb.com tonight (when I have access to the Radio) and if this fails I'll do a factory reset and retry. I'll let you know what the result is. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
Hi Lieven When you say 'time is still off' do you mean just by some hours (like a timezone issue) or not set at all (i.e. somewhere at 01/01/1970)? I don't think there is a message in /var/log/messages regarding getting time from the server. At least I don't see one in my log. Does the time get set when you connect to mysb.com? I just factory reset my SB Radio and after setting it up again the time gets set ok from mysb.com. And yes, you could use 'date' to set date and time by hand over ssh. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
Hello Felix, thank you for the clarification. I have installed SB server version 7.4.2 (latest version from yesterday) and firmware 7.4.2-r8401 on the Radio. The problem is not fixed, however. Time/date are still off. Could you give me a clue on how I can verify that the Radio tries to get the time from the server? What message should I be able to find the /var/log/messages? Is this the correct place to look? To set the time/date by hand: you mean by executing 'date' over an SSH connection? Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
Hi there Unfortunately we had to change the protocol about how SB Radio gets the time and date from the server for 7.5. An SB Radio running 7.5.x cannot get the time from a server running 7.4.x or the other way round. You either need to make sure SB Radio and the server use compatible versions or you could set the time and date by hand. Also screensavers displaying the time will not start when the time isn't set at all to prevent them from displaying a completely wrong date and time. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
I had this problem a few days ago. I was using MSB.com, and my screensavers stopped appearing. When playing Slacker stations, the now playing screen stayed up; when I turned the radio off, the screen was blank--no clock. A reboot did nothing. I was using 7.5. I tried updating to the latest nightly build and started toggling back and forth between MSB.com and SBS. At some point during all this the screensavers came back--I have no idea what did the trick. I haven't had the problem again (I just have the daily or every-other-day problem of the spinning wheel that requires a reboot). -- boolittlek boolittlek's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23650 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74603 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio refuses to display screensavers
And yet another update: upgrading to firmware 7.4.2-r8401 doesn't solve the problem either. It seems like the internal RTC of the Radio lost its state (probably during the no-power period of last week) and it cannot be restored to the current time. I suspect this because the Radio kept time through the firmware upgrades (although it still thinks we're 1970 right now...)
