Thanks for your reply. Tried the latest 7.5 beta firmware, still no luck. 30cm (12 in) from the access point, 60% signal strength. Move away 1 meter, signal strength 30%. I will take this back for a replacement or a repair. Well, I would suggest trying 7.5 BETA firmware.. The only way to get that right now is to install 7.5 BETA onto a system, hard wire your Boom to the router, and attach it to that server. Once you get the 7.5 firmware on the boom, Factory Reset it and try wireless again. If you still have the same VERY short range, then it's a hardware issue.
