[rails-oceania] Software Freedom Day - September 17, 2011

2011-08-30 Thread Lev Lafayette
Hello Ruby people (you little gems),

Apologies for what is a bit of a form letter!

Software Freedom Day is a public education effort with the aim of
increasing awareness of Free Software and its virtues, and encouraging
its use.

This year, Melbourne's event will be held at The Hub, 80 Harbour
Esplanade, Docklands starting at noon on Saturday 17th of September.

Write this date in your diary!

We would like a presence from Ruby users in Melbourne at this event
and would encourage such people to bring some friends along.

This year we're using the day to build The Freedom Network - a
community of free software advocates, programmers, systems operators,
database administrators, hardware specialists, and application users -
dedicated to the principle that free software is necessary and
effective.

We will plan, network, workshop and share ideas on what we're going to
do in the coming year to promote Software Freedom in the coming year.
Planned workshops include advocating free software in developing
countries, building free software communities in Victoria, free
software for beginners, and code sharing.

If any of you are interested in in running a workshop, please let us
know.

Best wishes,

Lev Lafayette

Re: [rails-oceania] Blog software recommendations?

2011-08-30 Thread Daryl Manning
Actually, I don't think there is *anything* wrong with that (other than the
fact you havne't updated it and are not blogging... =] ). I've got a
semi-finished, heroku deployable, markdown friendly, padrino and
MongoDB-backed wordpress killer sitting around in my dev folder somewhere as
well that's in a state of "almost ready"... =]

Hell, I also just liked the approach of Serious as well. Liking Jekyll,
still not convinced it's not going to trip me up blog-wise (I really do like
using tools like MarsEdit to post, so like the xml-rpc api).

Daryl.

Like a truly wasteful old skool fool, I write my own.

It's fun and I learn from it.

Although my velocity is glacial.

(as evidenced by the fact I broke something in my deploy, haven't had time
to fix it, and thus haven't blogged in 12 months.

[rails-oceania] [JOB] Permanent and Contract roles

2011-08-30 Thread Adam
We are looking for a permanent mid - snr Ruby dev as well as a
contractor for a 2 month contract on a side project related to our
core business. The contract role could be off-site after some initial
period of working together to make sure we are all on the same page.
The permanent role will be in our office in Collingwood (Melbourne).
Details of us and the permanent role are below, the skill set for the
contract role is similar but can be simply around development, the ops
component is less relavent for that role.

I am happy to hear from anyone interested directly:
adam.b...@gmail.com

Cheers,

Adam

Who we are:
A leading e-commerce Company based in Collingwood with large volume
sales on an existing Ruby on Rails platform. We have been focused on
the Australian market but are now expanding into the US. With our
small team we are necessarily a genuine devops outfit. We love
development and the problems that come with managing cloud based
infrastructure. We are focused on quality for our new work but we have
some legacy code that got us to where we are but needs to be retired
on the road to our expansion.

Who you are:
We are looking for someone with skills in Ruby as well as
configuration, deployment and server management. Someone who is
comfortable with pair programming, and robust discussion around design
and approach. Ideally that person will be uncomfortable with writing
code that doesn’t satisfy a failing test, will be relaxed, and love
what they do.

The Role:
The role will involve both supporting our existing application; a
Rails 2.3.8 application and the complicated infrastructure around it,
and helping build our new platform; a Rails 3.1 application with
vastly simplified deployment topology.

The support component requires you to be able to react to issues
occurring in production as well as be pro-active and plan to ensure
little or no downtime.

The development component entails a quality-focused approach, using
TDD and pair programming. You will be working in a small development
team and need to be a full stack developer, willing to learn about
technologies that you might not yet be familiar with.

Key skills:
Ruby/Rails
TDD
HTML/CSS/SASS
JavaScript (JQuery)
Linux (Ubuntu)
Apache or Nginx
Passenger or Unicorn
Chef or Puppet
Git

[rails-oceania] Please create a hyperlink to help save lives

2011-08-30 Thread Mike Bailey
How would you like to help save some dogs just by symlinking from your
blog/website? You can help expose the truth though the joy of PageRank.

Dog owners in Victoria will soon face the threat of their innocent pet being
seized and killed by Council officers.

The government has opened a $100,000 'dob in a dangerous dog' hotline and is
rushing through new laws that will allow Councils to kill residents pets if
they look like they have some 'pit bull' in them.

Leading calls for the culling of family pets is a dog pound contracting
company called The Lost Dogs' Home. They've sunk to a new low this time:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-08-25/rspca-rejects-pitbull-crossbreed-sale-claim/2856002

Googling for 'lost dogs home' brings up two sites exposing them for what
they really are. Each have a different tone and leave it up to you which one
you want to link to.

* currently at position 4 * Lost Dogs Home - Saving Cash by Killing Pets -
http://lostdogshome.com/
* currently at position 10 * Lost Dogs Home is Bad News for Pets -
http://goodfordogs.org/blog/2011/03/18/lost-dogs-home/

Elevating these pages in Google search results might make them rethink their
approach. Link away!

thanks!

[rails-oceania] [JOB] Rails Developers in Brisbane

2011-08-30 Thread Adrian
Hi. We're Ennova and we like to think we build great software. We're a
software consultancy and startup product shop up north in Brisbane.
Our primary focus is building Envision, a web-based construction
project management tool aimed at on-site personnel, like supervisors
and project managers. Our product takes all the information that is
normally shared in whispers and puts it in a web app, where it can be
used to save money, save time and increase efficiency.

That's our product. In addition to creating a wonderful product, we
offer a bespoke consultancy service, providing software development
services to our outstanding clients. We're involved in everything from
finance to real estate to cloud-based hosting.

We're a close-knit team. We eat lunch together, walk to the office
together, go for ridiculous amounts of coffee breaks together and
we're honest with each other. We work on each other's personal
projects and we pair on company projects. We're pragmatic about the
application of Agile - we have to be, we're a startup.

Over all, we're in this to develop our product. We understand that
helping construction sites save money and time by properly planning
and talking about their projects isn't sexy, but we love it anyway
because it's useful (and beautiful) and people are starting to love
our product as much as we do. Because of this, we're scaling up.

If you like all the things we like and you like solving highly complex
problems, come and work with us. We want you - whether you are a
graduate or have had a lifetime of experience.

For those who like a checklist, we'd like you to have:
- Experience developing complex web applications
- Experience designing systems based around OO architecture
- Experience working in an Agile and TDD environment
- A willingness to work with a distributed team
- The ability to understand and be understood well by others

It would be great if you also had:
- A level of comfort working with our business guys to identify and
develop product features
- Experience delivering working software iteratively (we release every
week or so)
- Experience in writing front-end code (Javascript chops would
definitely be a plus)
- Experience with Rails (we care more about your thinking skills
rather than your language-specific skills)
- Experience with git

Anyone interested should send us the following:
- An email telling us who you are and what you've done.
- Links to some hackities or open-source contributions you've done.
- (If you're so inclined) A resume and a list of people who will sing
your praises.

We're in Brisbane, but if you're not, that's not a dealbreaker. Come
up to the sunny north if you're looking for a change! We'll pay you
what we both agree to, so contact us at i...@ennova.com.au. No
recruiters, please.
