[RBW] Re: Princetontec EOS
Like others who have responded, I use the EOS as a helmet-mounted light, mostly on the medium setting to light up street signs and notify drivers who are about to turn in front of me.On the high setting, it helps on fast downhills. I have done some all-night riding with two EOS--one on the bars and one on the helmet. They don't throw as much light as a Dinotte or a nice dynamo-driven light, but it's workable. Battery life for me on the medium setting is 6-8 hours. At PBP, I changed the batteries before each night's riding. Here's a photo of me with the EOS, ready to set out: http://campyonly.com/images/ride_photos/2007/8-2007/pbp/mini-S7304105.JPG --Eric campyonly...@me.com www.campyonly.com www.wheelsnorth.org On Dec 12, 2008, at 8:47 AM, EricP wrote: > > Since this was brought up in another thread, wanted to ask about this > light. [RBW] Re: Princetontec EOS
Somebody will (or maybe already has) give you a more thorough, scientistical answer than mine, because I'm not picky, nor am I very knowledgeable about the particulars of lights. But I do own a couple of EOS's and I like them. (for the most part). I've commuted happily with them in both town and country. I've used them on night-time road rides quite happily, and I've used them in my dark garage, at campsites, and to double check that I've got all nail and no flesh when I cut my wee daughter's wee toenails. Happy happy happy with it all. Where I'm not happy has been with 3 things: Fast technical singletrack. With one EOS on the bar, and one on me noggin it's almost, but not quite enough light to ride like it's day time. Close enough to be frustrating that it's not just a little more. Next, one of my two has switch issues. You're supposed to be able to click the switch to sequence through the different light levels and the blinky option. This one doesn't go through them in order any more. It's like a slot machine of lighting levels. And finally, I've broken the clip off the back of 2 of the 3 of them that I've owned (Princeton Tec personnel replaced my first broken one at 24 hrs of Big Bear). Both times it was broken when the light was on the handlebar mount and I hit a (relatively small) bump in the road. The way the mount works, the light's weight (even though it doesn't way much) lets it put a lot of leverage on the clip. Now the replacement one i was given was made a little differently than the first, suggesting to me that Princeton Tec is working on improving this issue. But that one broke, too. So as of 2006, they hadn't perfected it yet. I haven't examined a newer one to see if they've changed the design yet again. Bottom line: If you're not looking toward singletrack use, they're good (but not perfect) lights. If I lost both of mine right now, I'd consider buying another. Anyway, I hope all that had something helpful in it. mac --- On Fri, 12/12/08, EricP wrote: > From: EricP > Subject: [RBW] Princetontec EOS > To: "RBW Owners Bunch" > Date: Friday, December 12, 2008, 11:47 AM > Since this was brought up in another thread, wanted to ask > about this > light. [RBW] Re: Phil "Rivy" Freewheel Hubs
The difference is in the cutouts. As regards price, Rich makes excellent wheels and I am very impressed the quality of his work. You'd be hard pressed to save a meaningful amount of money elsewhere, and would likely sacrifice quality. I also believe he'll lace a wheel with a normal phil hub if you want to save some money (he did for me, but that was more due to my wanting a 40h rear). [RBW] Re: Princetontec EOS
I have owned my EOS for about a year and use it mounted on my helmet.? It is a nice supplement to my Dinotte, does a nice job illuminating 5-10' ahead, although it is not great at lighting further down the?road on its own.? Using it on my helmet allows me to get attention of drivers and helps when I need light that is not straight ahead, like going into a turn.? For what it is its a great light and I do not like to ride without it at night.? It is solidly built and has been of great help for night-time flats.? Having 3 AAAs can be awkward as chargers and non-rechargable usually come in multiples of 2.? I get about 2 hours on high with my rechargables.? In the past I had trouble with the mount between the light and the handlebar attachment which was glued and separated after a few weeks.? However on the current version it appears to be attached better, although, I don't use it the handlebar mount so I can't vouch for it. -Original Message- From: EricP To: RBW Owners Bunch Sent: Fri, 12 Dec 2008 8:47 am Subject: [RBW] Princetontec EOS Since this was brought up in another thread, wanted to ask about this light. [RBW] Re: Princetontec EOS
I used the older model (apparently a new model has just come out) for a couple of seasons. On High, I got a consistent 2 hours. The beam is rather narrow; two mounted on either side of the stem made a sufficiently bright beam. I don't know if you followed the talk about new LED flashlights on the Boblist, but if not: this year I've substituted a Fenix L2D 2 AA flashlight for the two EOSes. The Fenix has too many modes to bother about, but the ones pertinent to my cycling, High and "Turbo", both put out more light, with a much broader beam, than the two EOSes I used last year. In particular, on Turbo, the one little LED emitter is bright enough for all my night riding, and I have bad night vision. They claim 80 lumens on High (about 2 1/2 hours with regular NMH batteries, closer to 3 with Dura Cell 2700 mah AAs). Turbo only gets about 70 minutes with regular NMH AAs but 90 with the Dura Cells. A Two Fish lockblock mounts it neatly under the bar. And I hear that the very newest emitters are even better. I'm not going to spend a lot of money on lights any time soon; so fast are they improving that in a couple of years we'll have hugely bright rechargeables with long run times for low prices. [RBW] FS: 1978 Trek TX500 56 cm
I have a 1978 Trek TX500 sport-touring bike. (Catalog here: http://www.vintage-trek.com/images/trek/TrekMidwest/TrekMidwest.pdf) Seat tube is 56 cm, as is the top tube. Follow the catalog link for the rest of the geometry. It has braze-ons for two bottles, rear brake cables, fenders, seat-stay rack, and downtube shifters. It has above- BB cable guides for the derailleurs. Dropouts are horizontal Suntour. The bike has a headbadge, but no decals. Paint is dark blue and the lugs are outlined in white. I'd say the paint is in decent condition. The bike was built for 27" wheels so it has very nice clearance with 700c (I ran 35mm studded Nokians with fenders). It has Mafac Racer centerpulls now, but you could use any number of long-reach calipers if you wanted. Here's the spec: Handlebars: 46 cm Nitto Noodles Stem: 12 cm Nitto Technomic. Tape: Red cotton with Velox plugs Brake Levers: Tektro R200 (these are basically new). Headset: Vintage Campagnolo Brakes: Mafac Racer (with Mafac seatpost binder-mounted rear stop) Shifters: Campagnolo friction downtube. I also have a set of Suntour Power Ratchet barcons, if you'd prefer to install those. Seatpost: Generic silver alloy one-bolt. [RBW] FS - Downtube Shifter T-shirts
Well, my surfing screenprinter showed up with the last batch of shirts this afternoon, so now you can wear it loud and say it proud (or is that the other way around?) "I Have Downtube Shifters... ...And I Know How To Use Them" now available in a short sleeved T-shirt. (And we're working on a "Barend Shifter" version, but that won't be until January, I reckon...) There's also a Cyclocross - "More Cowbell" design which is a long sleeve (and we immediately blew right through all the Mediums - more will be in early next week.) Of course, for you single gear afficianados, there's still the much coveted "One Cog - Zero Excuses" in a long sleeve. All this stuff can be found on the "Stuff" page - http://www.cyclofiend.com/stuff with pictures, and more info. -- Jim "Whew!
