I added some photographs of my Rivendell Road Standard from 1996 to
the flickr photosharing website (Rivendell Group) and I thought I'd
post a message on the RBW discussion group. I requested the bicycle,
during its original build with Bruce Gordon style rack mounts on the
fork, pinstriping and a custom paint job which is one that was
available on the first generation Paramount Design Group Paramount
bikes from 1980. The color is called Light Saddle Metallic, and was
 originally an automotive finish.

This bike was originally equipped for fast sports riding, but I've
recently redone it for light touring (thankfully, I had the necessary
brazed attachments on the original build, sorry Maynard...). The bike
has very close clearances so the mounting of Honjos is somewhat
compromised and really only works with tires of 28mm width (or less).
Honjos aren't really too necessary in Tucson, but they look nice!

I mounted the Berthoud GB2886 handlebar bag with a Mark's rack and VO
Classic decaleur, it has worked quite well with this setup.

One way of looking at this: regardless of the fault (frame, tire,
wheel, rider) the severity of the failure (almost guaranteed crash)
will keep me well clear of carbon spokes.

I've got nothing against Mavic, I have their aluminum rims on three of
my Rivendells.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Road Standard from 1996

2009-06-17 Thread Jim Cloud

Hi Carl,

The frame size is 65 cm, and the stem length is 120mm. The Nitto
Campee rear rack works perfectly with the GB799 panniers. they're
designed to fit on a rack with tapering side supports (like the racks
that are sometimes built by custom frame builders which are mounted on
the fender). The rack, which I bought from Ben's Cycle Super Store on
eBay, is now also available from Velo-Orange (it's actually on sale
now at VO).

Looking at the photos on the VO website, however, it's not clear to me
that the rack has the appropriate mounts to accommodate seat stay rack
braze-on's (it appears to be intended for canti mounting). I'd
certainly want to clarify with Chris whether the rack will fit a bike
with seat stay rack mounts. Here are the photos from Ben's Cycle's
eBay listing (I don't, obviously have any relationship with the
Seller):

http://cgi.ebay.com/NITTO-CAMPEE-REAR-BICYCLE-RACK-Touring_W0QQitemZ370205537836QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCycling_Parts_Accessories?hash=item5631f8362c_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

Note that I don't use the lowrider rack mounts to fit the GB799
panniers, they're not really compatible with those accessory racks (I
think some of the larger Berthoud panniers, or those originally made
by Sologne would fit appropriately).

Good luck!

Jim

[RBW] Re: 650B -Grand Bois Cypres tire

2009-06-17 Thread Rick

I've had the fatty rumpkins on for a couple of weeks now and have been
enjoying them through some mixed trail/road business and my regular
commute. Had to remove the fenders, mine were cut to accomodate the
CdlVs, and were a smidgen too small for the fatty's. So for right
now, the bleriot is in its top-down summer mode, unless I do something
rash and snag some new fenders that would take fatty's/hetres.

On that front, I'm guessing my options include VO zeppelins and the
larger Honjos Jitensha carries?

I have asked them. The answer is that right now, no new Grand Bois
tires are planned. The molds for the existing tires need to be
amortized first. If something comes along, I suspect it'll be a 650B x

[RBW] SF Question

2009-06-17 Thread Robert Kirkpatrick

A question for the SF area RBWO-ers: Say you are coming into town via
the Amtrak (the Emeryville station seems to be the closest to the city
I believe) with one's bicycle and you wanted to see things such as Riv
World Headquarters, SFMOMA and other art galleries. So any
suggestions on where to stay area wise or actual hotel suggestions
would be much appreciated. I'm pretty cool with cycling or walking
around the city and definitely am cool with the BART and such. I
think I'd rather be closer to the gallery zone (which seems to be
within Misson/Market and 1st/4th) and BART/Bicycle out to other
activities but I also don't want to fork over my first born. Anyway
any and all advice is appreciated.

thanks,
Robert

[RBW] Sam Hillborne First Impressions

2009-06-17 Thread relistan

My 60cm Sam Hillborne partial build arrived on Friday and I spent the
weekend putting it together. This is truly a gorgeous bike. The
paint looks fantastic and the lugs are very nice. Mine has a bit
fancier down tube lug than the one photographed by Renaissance
Bicycles. I'll post photos once it's wearing its fenders (not at the
moment).

I commute daily and this is now my daily rider (replacing massively
upgraded 1971 Peugeot UO-8). I'll give riding impressions here and
if you want to know how its set up then keep reading below.

The ride is very smooth. My first impression is man those handle
bars are really up there! This will come as no surprise to Riv
riders, I imagine, but it was surprising to me. At first I wasn't
sure about it, but now I find it very comfortable. The frame geometry
is in general very comfortable. I know this is Grant's shtick, but
he's not just talking, it's for real. At the moment the saddle feels
a bit far forward, but it's not on the right post yet.

I had never ridden bar-end shifters. The one thing I didn't like
about the Hillborne frame was the lack of provision for down tube
shifters (my preference). But I ordered it and took the leap of
faith. I got used to these things in two rides and now it's totally
natural. I like it. The Silver shifters are very close copies of the
SunTour Sprints that I run on my Peugeot. They work great in bar end
configuration, something I wouldn't have expected.

I was convinced by Keven at Riv on the phone to order the Schwalbe
Marathon Supremes instead of the Jack Browns. I wanted the look of
the tan sidewall but I thought, Heck these guys know what they're
doing and if he says get the Schwalbes, then do it. I still want to
try the Jack Browns for comparison at some point, but for now I'm very
happy. These ride like butter! Through the rougher parts of the road
it's like floating on air over the mess.

With 7 speeds in the rear and three in the front (haven't needed that
tiny front one yet), I feel like I have infinite gearing available.
The SRAM rear derailleur is fast and smooth and highly accurate.
Never ridden one before but I'm very happy with it.

I highly recommend this bike. It's comfortable, easy to ride, and
plenty light and quick, even decked out with gear that is not
amazingly light weight.

Here's how I have it set up at the moment. I should say here that I
weigh 230lbs (and live on top of a big hill and commute through an
industrial area) and that I have a history of doing damage to axles,
drive-side cups/cones, and cranksets. I ordered things to be rugged
because I don't want to deal with repairing stuff as much as possible.

 * 60 cm Sam Hillborne frame
 * Phil Rivy Hubs with Velocity Dyad Rims (Rich built)
 * IRD 7sp freewheel
 * Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 42mm tires
 * Sugino XD2 cranks (175mm) a la Riv
 * Campagnolo Mirage front derailleur
 * SRAM X-7 rear derailleur
 * Silver bar end shifters
 * Nitto Noodle bars
 * Cane Creek SCR-5 levers (tan)
 * Velo Orange Grenouille cantilevers
 * Velo Orange 110mm stem
 * Velo Orange stem adaptor
 * Velo Orange road pedals (chrome cages) with MKS tall clips and
Christophe straps
 * Velo Orange type 2 bottle holders
 * New Brooks B-17 honey saddle (borrowed from my Raleigh
Professional)
 * Campagnolo Nuovo Record seat post (borrowed from my Raleigh

I have a Velo Orange seat post and Cardiff Mercia saddle waiting at
home to go on the bike for tomorrow's riding. We'll see how that
changes things. This weekend I will be fitting Velo Orange 52mm alloy
fenders and will get photos on the first sunny day after that. :)

Cheers,
Karl

[RBW] Re: Thank goodness for steel spokes and Rich Lesnik

2009-06-17 Thread Chicken Sandwich
There are other carbon-fiber spoked wheels out there that have been
performing well for years. This particular Mavic rim is just a bad design
and prone to failures. But then again, so are the Ksyriums for that matter,
which are metal rims with metal spokes. I've seen enough of them taco'ed to
stay away.

I don't see people going around blowing up Zipp wheels on a regular basis,
or Hed or Spinnergy either.

I will admit that, I am not a fan of Mavic rims at all, no matter what
materials they are made of. They have given me lots of problems.

Although nothing conclusive has been determined regarding the actual
cause of this structural failure (spokes vs. rim vs. tire vs. frame

using it where it probably doesn't yet belong. We all realize the pressure
the industry has to race to the Next Big Thing, but riders (racers, in
particular) are being used as Guinea pigs. Advanced engineering requires
advanced, and extensive, testing. I trust Mavic to make metal rims. But
that's all. Until they quit treating their customers like crash test
dummies, I'll stick with their old school metal products which, thus far,
 have been reputable.

 Stick with what you know.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne First Impressions

2009-06-17 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Man! That's quite an upgrade, from a U08 to even a made in Taiwan Rivendell!
I decided some time ago that, because one of my Riv customs was hanging on
the wall while I rode (fixed gear) beaters to work, that I would have the
Riv converted to fixed and use it for commuting. I have had no regrets about
this since.

The best thing about the Rivs, IME and IMO, is their fit and handling.
Everything else -- lugs, colors, braze ons, what have you -- is gravy on the
mashed potatoes of fit and handling.

Patrick Moore, who just commuted 17+ miles rt today, and climbed the steep
hill behind Don Chalmers on 528 in the 69 gear (and dropped a sorry geary
rider!), without having to resort to the new, 18t/61 bailout gear -- but
who caught the bus halfway home because of the wind.

fancier down tube lug than the one photographed by Renaissance

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne First Impressions

2009-06-17 Thread relistan

Well for me this was a big stretch budget wise, but I'm glad that I
did it. I promised myself that if I stuck with commuting by bike that
I'd get an upgrade. Well it has been just over two years of 365 day a
year commuting and so my wife suggested it was time. We had visited
Rivendell when we were down in the Bay Area two years ago and she
liked them as much as I did. I was happy to take her up on it. Today
I was stopped twice by people admiring the bike! It was partly sunny
and there were lots of commuters out. A guy on a super clean and nice
Raleigh Super Course with Nervex lugs shouted to me as he rode down a
different path as it Y-ed. That was fun. :)

Just put the VO seat post, Cardiff saddle and VO chain stay protector
(elk hide) on the bike and it looks great!

For the record, that UO-8 has been a real champion commuter. It's a
long frame and I built a set of wheels for it (Pelissier hubs and
Super Champion rims) and it's very comfortable, lowly as the
construction might be. It will continue to do duty whenever I have to
lock a bike up outside. I still recommend that bike to anyone on a
budget. But I'm happy I got the Hillborne!

Cheers,
Karl

[RBW] Re: SF Question

2009-06-17 Thread Len Gilbert

I'd recommend downtown SF as a first choice, since you can BART out to
Walnut Creek (Riv HQ) with a bike during commute hours, but not IN to
SF. See http://511.org for schedules, routes and such. Hotels will all
be pricey. SF also gives you the option to ride out over the Golden
Gate bridge into Marin.

Emeryville has several hotels that would be cheaper than SF and very
conveniently located. My company puts up visitors from other offices
there. You do have to get to MacArthur BART, (which is quite close)
either on your bike or on the free Emery-go-Round bus. MacArthur also
has direct BART service later than the Rockridge line, so you don't
need to transfer to get home after a dinner. It is a bit sketchier
neighborhood than Rockridge BART. Rockridge is wonderful for
restaurants and tooling around, but has no accomodations. Rockridge
and MacArthur BART are both in Oakland. Walnut Creek also has a couple
of hotels, but you'll be in suburbia. Nice, upscale suburbia, but not
really in SF. The BART stop there is very close to Riv. I'd not
recommend Berkeley unless you want to be in Berkeley. It's only half
way between SF and WC if you ride over the top of the hills, not as
the train rolls.

Sounds like you are looking for the gallery/city/SF experience more
than the bike over the east bay hills and/or marin experience, so
you'll want to hunt for a discount rate somewhere in the city, with
Emeryville as a backup.

On Jun 17, 2:17 pm, Robert Kirkpatrick spiralc...@gmail.com wrote:
Anyway
any and all advice is appreciated.

 thanks,
 Robert
