No, Shimano uses a 2:1 ratio. The only way you can use it is if you use
something like Jtek's Shiftmate.

As the black sidewall Paselas become more available, are we at risk of

My wife and I own a DaVinci Joint Venture tandem that has DaVinci
cranks. The crank arms are beautifully made high-polished aluminum.
Everything DaVinci-designed on our tandem functions perfectly. Give

[RBW] Re: another plug for MUSA

2009-06-23 Thread Bruce
Depends on what underwear you wear. I find wool boxers to be great under MUSA
shorts and eschew chamois unless I'm on an as yet unbroken in leather saddle.
The thin merino shorts from RBW are excellent when you want something light. I
have a couple of pairs of these.

http://www.rivbike.com/products/list/clothing?a=1&page=4#product=22-606

And there are offerings from Ibex and other places to look at as well. I've had
great service from UK Army surplus boxers: Undyed wool, and I had to use a
safety pin to keep the fly closed while riding. YMMV

http://www.northdoorway.com/ProductInfo.aspx?id=3402373

In non wool, these Champion "Active Fit" briefs (got mine for less at Costco)
are surprisingly good.

http://www.boxerbriefs.com/eshop/10browse.asp?category=Champion

I agree on the Bag Balm or other friction reducer on rides over about 10 miles.

[RBW] Re: Broken Fender

2009-06-23 Thread JoelMatthews

I had a front Honjo bust where it bolts in under the fender. This
happened off road. I understand some people use an L bracket to avoid
this.

The Honjos on my city bike kept getting bent out of shape. Presumably
from knucklehead fellow bikers at bike stands.

I decided to go with Berthouds and SKS. Berthouds have a few dents,
but hold their form admirably.

[RBW] Broken Fender

2009-06-23 Thread MichaelH

I noticed some unusual rattling from my rear Honjo fender today, and a
close inspection revealed a crack at the seat stay bridge attachment.
This one threads directly into the bridge. The fender is about a year
old, and has between 3 & 4,000 miles on it. I put a small rubber
washer between the fender and the stay and a metal washer on the
inside.

I had another rear Honjo fender break on me with just about the same
amount of milage. That one was on a different bike, and broke at the
rear fender stay. I attributed that break to having installed it with
a single bolt at the rear fender. This one went on with two bolts and
remains quite tight at both the chain stay and fender stay.

I live a couple of niles down a dirt road and this fender probably
spent close to a third of its life on dirt roads. And the general
condition of paved roads here in northern Vt is abysmal. There are a
few sections on my daily commute that regularly rattle parts off the
bike if they are not attached tightly. But the incident leaves me
wondering if these Al. fenders - which I love for their good looks,
their light weight, full coverage, and firm stay in place manners -
are tough enough for the task. I don't expect a fender to last
forever but longer than this. What have others experienced? Should I
switch to steel, or revery to plastic and a big mud flap?

Just for a little inspiration, JPW has a nice little rascal rando and
a mini-me Masi on his flicker page. Why didn't my parents know about
such things?

Not an answer to your question, but while you are shopping, you should also

[RBW] DaVinci Cranks

2009-06-23 Thread MichaelH

Has anyone on this list used the DaVinci Cranks? I have been thinking
about swapping the double on my commuter for a triple. I really like
the Sugino Alpina compact double for all of my commuting and around
town riding, but hope to do some light touring before the summer is
out and will need something smaller than the 34 x27 low gear I now
have to negotiate mountains in Vt & NY. The DaVinci cranks look to be
quite well made, and offer something they call "single radius" which
will allow me to install them without buying a new BB. I haven't seen
them in person, but I understand their products are well regarded.

[RBW] Re: Childrens bikes

2009-06-23 Thread Jay Sinn

I had to do a double take and checked out the Surly site about
standover height on the 42 cm LHT. It claims 27.7 inches however I bet
that could be reduced an inch, possibly and inch and a half. I had'nt
even considered a Suly in matter of a child's bike so that was a
pleasant surprise.

The Giant barely fits my son at exactly 25 inchs (mid frame), though I
would like to
get him a chomoly frame, I settled for this. Also since I had the
upgade of Albatross bars in mind the suspension forks provide enough
weight to counteract
the touchy lack of control feeling you get with 'em. My son is also a
hair lacking
in the motor skill department as well.

I'm considering a Brooks for the young man but that might be a stretch
too soon because of saddle care issues. He feels that a bicycle is
also a human powered submersable, so the deeper the mud puddle the
great the water sport.

[RBW] Re: A slight change in style

2009-06-23 Thread Gino Zahnd

For the Ram, I never could like the way any tire larger than 28 rides.
For me, putting large tires on the Ram takes out the lively feel, the
crisp cornering at 45mph, and it feels too squishy when climbing.

I've been running Conti 25's or 28's on the Ram for a long time now,
and that seems to be the sweet spot for that bike if speed is a
concern. And, fenders fit when winter rolls 'round in California.

On the other hand, the squishy-n-fast 42mm Hetres on the Saluki are
where my fat road tire love lies. I rode a century on that bike this
weekend, and it was my fastest time on this particular course, ever.
By quite a margin.

Gino '25's and Dura Ace STI on my Ram' Z.

I've put JBs on my Rambouillet and Panaracer T-Serves (black Paselas)
35s on my AHH. Both bikes seem a little better for it. Still, I'll
probably go back to Pasela 32s on the Rambouillet at some point.

Here's the Rambouillet:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335...@n00/3653004212/

And the Hilsen:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335...@n00/3604579217/in/set-72157613195465589/

I've since put fenders back on the Hilsen and will eventually put the
T-serves on my commuter and the commuter's Paselas on the Hilsen.

I agree with James about liking tan sidewalls even if my get so
covered with crude from the rain they no longer look tan.

[RBW] Re: Childrens bikes

2009-06-23 Thread David Estes
Right now I'm thinking of converting the "jump
bmx"
to a geared bike, then I have a old 600A
framethat barely
fits a 650c Nexus
wheel.

I'm on the lookout for old 24" and 650c "traditional" road bikes all the
time. The vast majority of 650c bikes are tri-bikes, but older steel road
bikes pop up on ebay now and then.

Kona's 24" Jake cross
bike is pretty cool, too.

I wouldn't mind finding a 24" mtn. bike tbut they're all so heavy and with
suspension. Would like to find a lighter/rigid 24" one some day, but don't
know if they exist.

[RBW] Big Tire Ram Rom (was A slight change in style)

2009-06-23 Thread James Warren

Esteban,
That's outstanding. I too have Hilsenized my Ram, or maybe I should say
JackBrownized. There seems to be no going back, those tires are so good.

It's not hard but it's a tiny bit of a project to make it work: you either need
brake levers with extra QR or the new Tektro big mouth brake to make it work.
If you go with normal Shimano brakes and levers with the extra QR, you still
have to set up the brakes with the barrel adjuster most of the way up. Taking
off the wheel then requires turning the barrel all the way CW and releasing
both QR's, but I've got no problem with all of that. It's all totally worth it
if you don't need fender space.

[RBW] Re: Childrens bikes

2009-06-23 Thread Frank

My almost-9 year old rides a 42cm Surly LHT with GripKing pedals and
(added) interruptor cross levers. The bike should fit him for several
years, and he quickly learned the nuances of bar-end shifting and
braking. He's been on it since his 8th birthday, and it's really
enhanced our family riding and expanded our radius to "all safe
routes". It's been an excellent solution, and though it's not priced
like other kids bikes, it has been well worth the investment.

[RBW] Re: A slight change in style

2009-06-23 Thread James Warren

What stands out for me regarding Bruce's bike is the fact that that Ram blue
always seemed kind of weird to me, but now with the right black accessories, it
really pops.

It's interesting: the AHH blue looks really good when the trim is honey but not
as much for the Ram blue. The AHH blue would probably also look good set up
like Bruce's bike though.

[RBW] Re: Childrens bikes

2009-06-23 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Catie turned 8 on June 8th. I had promised her a new bike if she finally
learned to ride her Electra Little Betty sans training wheels -- Catie is
intellectually and artistically precocious but somewhat retrograde in her
gross motor skills: tall and klutzy, as I was as a boy (but a lot prettier).
She put her mind to it and did so, so I bought her this:
http://www.rei.com/product/781229

Hers is the 24" wheel model: 3 speed coaster brake hub, aluminum frame and
parts -- lighter by far than the Little Betty and even lighter compared to
the Magna/Raleigh 16" wheel bike her mother bought her, which weighs close
to what my Monocog 29er weighs. The townie is not a bad bike, though it
comes only in pink, which is *so* six year old.

Catie started out with a Radio Flyer trike with freewheel and optional
remote parent steering, then I bought her a little 12" wheel bike, then a
16" wheel bike while her mother bought her the Raleigh-so-called. The the
Little Betty at five, and now the Townie. Quite a collection for someone whe
didn't leave the training wheels behind until a month ago.

I like this new aesthetic of big, bold tires on bikes. It's not just a
black sidewall thing, but it helps when the tires is a single color
(see also the cream Fat Franks). Oddly enough, many road bikes
superficially have this look even with thin tires, because of the tall
aero rims also in fashion. Lots of wheels have that big, substantial
look to them. They look like solid, capable bikes, ready for the
charge. I like it.

[RBW] Re: A slight change in style

2009-06-23 Thread James Warren

This heresy creeping through this list and on so many new Rivendell bikes! So
many people preferring black sidewalls! What happened to our good fight to keep
tan alive. :)

Seriously, Bruce, the bike looks so good that when you said all-black Paselas,
I thought, "uh-oh," but then when I saw the photo, I was won over with how the
whole bike comes together. I wonder how black fenders would look on it.

Back to my little quip, I remember back in 94-95 or so, when I replaced the
stock tires on my MB-4, I was kind of bummed that the new all-black ones didn't
look as good as the tan sidewalls. I held that opinion ever since, and I
sometimes feel compelled to tell my friends, "hey, I was into tan sidewalls
before Rivendell even existed."

-James

who really, really wishes he could go on the Orange County ride on Saturday,
but every time these things come up, there is a conflict and I can't go. 3rd
time in a row, not to mention both Rivendell rides at RBWHQ.

You didn't say how long you've been working on it, but it'll likely
take a good 2-3 days for even liquid wrench to get in far enough to
help. Ammonia might help too, but do it outside - i tried it in the
basement on a stuck post and stunk up the place. I ended up cutting
the post out of that bike, my old Bridgestone MB. Vertically cutting a
seatpost with a hacksaw blade is certainly an exercise in patience.

No. The frame is a 52 cm, and takes 26" rims. That is what you see.

[RBW] Re: Fun with a Stuck Seatpost

2009-06-23 Thread Bill M.

It won't help now, but one thing you DON"T want to do is mix greases,
like using both Phil and anti-seize. Grease is basically oil plus a
thickener, and many of the different thickeners used are chemically
incompatible with each other. They may react and either lose their
thickening power and get runny, or thicken into a clay-like glob.
Either way, they won't do their job. So, use Phil OR anti-seize, but
not both.

I've read that soaking in household ammonia will free up a stuck post,
but I've not had to try it.

[RBW] Re: Fun with a Stuck Seatpost

2009-06-23 Thread Steve

I have occasionally experienced this too. Eventually it will release.
The ultimate fix is to cut the top of the post off just above the end
of the seat tube, then use a hacksaw blade down inside the post to cut
a slot. This always works. Just be careful you don't cut into the
seat tube: gentle does it with frequent checks using a flashlight.
To prevent freezing, I finally bought a rotary hone for my drill to
clean up the seat tube before inserting the post. Clean old grease
out of the seat tube using brake cleaner on a rag, then use the hone
to remove corrosion and just barely smooth the walls. Spray Boeshield
or Framesaver to seal it. Use some 600 grade sandpaper on your old
seat post to likewise remove any aluminum corrosion blooms and smooth
the wall where it inserts into the tube. Lather with Phil grease,
reinsert, tighten. For more protection, remove the grease from the
top of the tube and place a tiny silicone bead to seal it and keep
rain out if this is a problem.
And your advice about occasional removal is good.

[RBW] Fun with a Stuck Seatpost

2009-06-23 Thread Bob

My daily rider, a vintage steel Trek, is now afflicted. This is
embarrassing, because I remember pulling the post about two years ago
and slathering it with Phil Wood grease and Park Anti-Seize. Oh well.

Thus far, I have tried removing the saddle and tapping with a mallet
and wooden block; heating with a hair dryer after dripping Liquid
Wrench and other penetrants from all sides; and just about every
technique Sheldon recommended on his site.

I am trying not do do something so rash that I damage any equipment.

Luckily, the seat height is just about right, but I just can't sleep
knowing one of my rides has a frozen 'post.

Word to the wise: Pull your post occasionally, because you can . . .

Peace,
Bob
