[RBW] FS New Phil Wood Wheels and Bottom Bracket , New Paul Brakes

2010-01-27 Thread Andrew
Selling a few items for a project I abandoned when I scored a nice
Allrounder. Shipping is not included in the prices.

1. Brand new, professionally built rear wheel with:

-Phil wood 135mm 36 hole CSS633 touring cassette rear FSA hub in
silver
-DT 14/15/14 silver stainless steel butted spokes and nickel brass
nipples
-DYAD 36h Silver 700c Synergy Rims
-Zefal Rim tape

The wheel was built recently, it has never been used or put on a bike,
brand new. I know Rivendell likes the synergys but the DYADs are the
strongest touring rims. These are the most durable wheels you can get.
Rivendell would sell these for around $520. I'll sell mine for $395.

2. Brand new, professionally built front wheel with:

-Phil wood 36 hole CSF600 front touring FSA silver hub
-DT 14/15/14 silver stainless steel butted spokes and nickel brass
nipples
-DYAD 36h Silver 700c Synergy Rims
-Zefal Rim tape

The wheel was also built recently, it has never been used or put on a
bike, brand new. Rivendell would sell these for around $250. I'll sell
mine for $195. Brand new, never installed. I will sell the set for
$575.

3. Brand new never installed Phil Wood 108mm JIS Stainless Steel
Bottom Bracket 68/73mm model BRS08S. This is good for doubles on most
Riv bikes, or for the Atlantis. $85 for the bottom bracket. $115 with
new phil wood english threaded 68mm stainless steel cups.

4. Brand new still in the bag Paul neo retro silver cantilever brake-
$75

5. Brand new still in the bag Paul Touring silver cantilever brake-$75

2010-01-27 Thread Frederick, Steve
Heh, I carried a complete Turkey leftover dinner in my L'il Joe on a day after
thanksgiving club ride . It made quite an impression at the rest stop. Double
wrapped in foil it even stayed sorta warm...though it resembled a casserole
more than individual dishes.

you can have fun with Keven's bag. I occasionally ride with a rabid
vegan. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but she's pretty,
well, vocal about it. So a couple weeks ago at the top of Mt Veeder,
about 2 1/2 hours into the ride, we stopped for a break. The vegen
began to saw into her larabar, I opened up Keven's bag, and pulled out
a complete McD's meal - Big Mac and Fries - which I offered to her.

she demurred.

but it was still fun.

Re: [RBW] Re: Low-Mounted Headlights

2010-01-27 Thread Ron Farnsworth
A handlebar mount has some advantages,
- the ability to adjust light position while riding
- less water (if raining) and debris flying up from the front wheel (even with
fenders)
- you can use your hand to partially shield the headlight from walkers (or
other riders on a bike trail).
- easy on/easy off (if that matters)
- With my DiNotte, I use 2 handlebar bags with no interference problem

I've had my pair of home-brewed LED lights on the low-rider bosses on
my Miyata, but thought that that was too low.  It over-emphasized the
road contour and made insignificant undulations look like potholes.
The same lights are currently under are currently mounted to the
supports under a Nashbar front rack at around top-of-wheel height on
my 650b commuter, and I like that position better.  Just low enough to
see some shadows on the road, but not so low as to create them where
they shouldn't be.  Also, having the lights up and further forward
eliminated the shadows cast by the rim and tire, which is nice.

Another thought - if the lights are too low, they will have to be
aimed up higher, and so will have more tendency to shine into the eyes
of oncoming drivers rather than onto the road surface.  Having them
higher lets me tilt them down a bit more to put the light where I want
it.

Axle height would be too low for me.  The fender front stay / light
hoop on many Ebisus would be perfect.  Your lights may vary!

I was in the reserves while I was an undergrad, was out there for a
three-week JTF mission; and yes, we had to use the buddy system,
too. And, had a restriction on range ( I couldn't have gone down to
SD or up to SF while out there). But, I got to know Mulholland well,
from Mugu to Topanga. A LOT of time spent in the bush there. Bunch of
jarheads from Nashville and Knoxville living in a CP tent on a Seabee
base, we had a good time whilst out there But, we did get bikes
out of the base's recreation-equipment checkout, so we rode all over
Oxnard a lot

And to think, Rivendell was just about to get started then. (to

> A handlebar mount has some advantages,

And for the threadless stem people among us (we know you are lurking
around out there) Paul has this swell device:

http://www.paulcomp.com/stemlightmount.html

Probably a real good spot for mountain and cross biking or people who
ride on rough trails (think you call them fire roads out west - we
call them unpaved here in the Midwest where things tend to burn less
frequently).

I like under the front rack where feasible. Especially when you are
parking the bike around town the rack frame protects the light from
josteling.

I saw a Bruce Gordon custom front pannier rack where he put a mount on
the top of the metal that curves around the wheel for stability.
Probably not the best place for a light on a townbike as the light is
exposed. For touring it puts the light up front and at a decent
height with no chance of the panniers cutting off the light.

A Giant Twist-Tie. It's like a bread bag twist tie only about 2 feet
long and covered in foam. It's handy for quickly securing your bike
to a small tree or post or another bike. Also provides padding
between bike and other object. Can also secure things to the rear
rack or saddlebag. Since it's bendy you can fold it to whatever size
to fit in the bag and it weighs nearly nothing.

Yes, it is more often the case that I use my kit to help somebody else
who hasn't been as diligent about maintaining their bike. My current
kit really weighs very little in the end and if I can help somebody
else avoid having to call in evac then it's worth it. Up until quite
recently, I carried the same kit you describe, right down to the
Ritchey CPR tool and it was all I really needed for road riding. Now
doing mixed terrain rides, the likelihood of something going wrong
(particularly with tires) increases a bit.

That's true, and it's been a few years since I've packed along my mini
headset wrenches on a ride.

Part of the impetus is ritual for me. If I bring the chain tool, the chain
won't break...

Part of it is to not burden the other folks in any group with my repair
issues. A related part is to be able to assist those who are stuck. I was
the only person on a recent fixed-gear ride to have a chain tool. Another
time, I helped to zip-tie a broken suspension fork together well enough for
another rider to change a 13 or so mile hike back into a ride.

Part of it is the nature of the rides in these parts - you tend to ride away
from civilization reasonably quickly, and with the topography, phones don't
always get reception. At night, the ice weasels come out...

I'd rather limp home back call for a ride. The most important thing a
bicycle can do is get you home.

I don't have a photo handy, but I wasn't able to find a good way to mount my
Edeluxe on the fork crown (it interfered with the shifter cables from my bike's
Ergo levers). I put it on the bars, and it works great there. It's also out
of the way of a handlebar bag for those times when I use one.

Cannot comment on front caliper pivot mount. If you have a Pass Stow

A truck destroyed much of the rest bike last summer. The eDeluxe is
just fine, about to start working again as the replacement bike is
being assembled this week.

In the interest of full disclosure my go fast (at least for me) bike
has a micro topeak QR bag with levers, small multi tool and CO2 pump
in bag and the spare tube slung underneath through the loops (think
they are there for a mini pump). I ususally ride this bike on group
rides or if I am feeling strong and want to go out and crank it-
hasn't happened much lately.

On the Steel rivish "all rounder" I am not so much concerned about
weight but its not like I have a bike stand or an anvil in there or
anything;-)

[RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-27 Thread Jim Cloud
I ride almost exclusively by myself on rides around the Tucson area.
These include some rides in areas that are, by comparison to some in
more metropolitan locations, quite remote. For example, one ride I've
enjoyed is a backroads tour in Southeastern Arizona in mixed cattle
country from Sonoita that ends up at the West entrance to Fort
Huachuca. This is a rolling hills ride where the closest bike shop is
probably at least 30 miles distant. The ride generally does not
include even seeing another bike rider. (Here's a Google Maps link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl)

Being without a chain tool, or the ability to replace a broken spoke
in an area like this is not something I'm willing to try. When I
consider the weight of the tools/spares I'm carrying, the confidence
that I can be relatively certain of my ability to handle any
reasonable maintenance/repair in situ is more than worth the weight.

[RBW] Berthouds and Hetres Update

2010-01-27 Thread Esteban
Just an update here -- I ended up adding 50mm Berthouds to my 650B
Protovelo (custom) in order to better accommodate Grand Bois Hetre
tires (42mm, fo' real). I tried to document the clearance with these
mudguards:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671...@n02/sets/72157622888947795/

On the Herse site, they remark, "For many bikes using the Grand Bois
650b x 42 Hetre tire, the 650b x 50mm Berthoud fender is the best
fender option available. The reason is more luck than intent we
believe. The Berthoud fender in this size has a relatively flat
profile - so it doesn't wrap as far down alongside the fender as some
of the traditional French fenders that are not easily obtainable. So
the result is that the fender needs less clearance."

I found that there was a bit more room with the Berthouds, but they
are more stretchy than the Honjos. When I first mounted the rear
fender, I drilled the hole for the seatstay bridge a bit off, and it
stretched out the fender. When that happened, it became slightly more
narrow.

I hope this info helps Riv owners of 650B considering moving to
Hetres. The ride is really incredible, but it has been a pain to get
it passable in terms of clearance.

I mount a pair of dinotte led lights to the front of a marks mini
Rack. This works pretty well. It's lower and more forward than the
bars and is in front of the bag. It's a simple rig. I took an old HB,
in my case an odd width cinelli, and cut out the middle section. I
stuck cork in the end and bolted it to the front of the rack. The
batteries sit conveniently in the front (Acorn) bag.

Murphy's laws. The times I pair it all down and leave stuff seem to
be the one or two times a decade I am walking home for miles.

What about the VBQ-stocked 58mm Honjos (hammered or fluted)?

They should fit great.

I have Hetres and BQ¹s Honjo 58s on my Blériot. They work well and look
good, but can¹t imagine how smaller fenders would fit ‹ though part of that
limitation may be that the frame wasn¹t designed with such fat tires in
mind.

[RBW] Simpleone prototype at RBW

2010-01-27 Thread Jim M.
I stopped by RBW for some parts today and got to see a beautiful
Simpleone prototype. It's a 64cm in a very attractive burgundy. The
decals are very tasteful, and they even include Rivendell in small
type. Sorry, I had no camera with me. Without the decals, you would
think it's a Quickbeam in a new color. I didn't get a chance to ride
it, but I may go back tomorrow with camera and time to try it.

If you missed out on the QB, you won't go wrong getting a Simpleone
(pronounced sim-play-own-ay). ;-)

One of the parts I picked up was the SRAM road lever:
http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/sram-s500-road-brake-levers/15-164
I've used the Cane Creeks and Shimanos, and the SRAM is in between
those in size, and has a better ergonomic shape, at least to my hands.
It also has adjustable reach.

[RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-27 Thread Earl Grey
I don't use the adjustable wrench very often at all, EXCEPT as an
extension handle for the included Allen keys. If you need the long end
to reach a bolt (road brake lever, for example) you can't really get
enough leverage for proper torque. Slip the hex hole on the adjustable
wrench over the short end of the Allen, and you got yourself a very
nice handle.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I tend to be in the "minimalist but add a few things" category, and I have
just taken to carrying my kit for the commuter Riv in a bar bag (Ryan, the
holder don't work and I'll return it). So I may not even qualify for this
discussion of saddlebags. But anyway.

The motive that prompted me to add a little bit to my formerly minimalist
kits (minimalist = tube + lever plus single 5/6 allen) was the fear of being
late for work if some mishap should haply happen en route to the treadmill.
So I added a second tube plus a multi tool with more allen heads plus a
brake cable plus a chain tool plus a chain link plus a small patch kit so I
could fix flatted tubes on office time. (Boss: "Patrick! Come here! I need
you!" Patrick: " Hang on, dammit, I'm fixing my bike! Jeez!" -- and I tacked
a piece of cardboard to the wall of my office so the wall wouldn't scuff my
bar tape or saddle.) In winter I also add a flashlight for night time
repairs and a few extra AAAs for the Superflash and flashlight. Now that I
work at home I haven't gotten around to re-considering my kit.

Taking a tangent: for you -- or us -- weight weenies, the Lezyne HP model
minipump is the best mini I've used; better than even the Quicker. That hose
makes all the difference. I carry one on my gofast; the other bikes have
Topeak road frame pumps -- better than Zefal, IMO.

Here's a 'nother tangent: do y'all have a kit for each bike, or do you swap
the bag between bikes? Me, I have one for each.

[RBW] Re: Low-Mounted Headlights

2010-01-27 Thread EricP
My E3 on the Hillborne is on the side of the Nitto Mini Rack. Good
beam pattern at that hight. Not sure it's the ideal mounting, though.

An advantage of handlebar mounted lights - in winter (at least in
places with snow/slush) there is less chance of a build up on the
lens. That being said, the current winter bike has a Cyo mounted on
the fork crown. Does mean no front rack. But the trade-off seemed
worth it.

[RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-27 Thread EricP
Patrick,

Different for each bike. Hopefully to spend a bit less time deciding
"which bike to ride?" now switch everything to that bike. Plus, I
don't mind being over-prepared. All the repair stuff is only a couple
of pounds. I still have to lose a lot more than that around the
middle.

Strangely, "way back in the day" I raced. Mountain bike. At that
time, there was no support. Something broke on the ride, we had to
fix it or drop out. Probably where the "everything but the kitchen
sink" mentality started.

Did snap a chain last week. But was close enough to Hiawatha Cyclery
that just walked there instead of fixing it. Ended up replacing the
chain, anyway.

I'm finally heading toward having one good bag per bike, now that i'm
making my own bags. Each bike has a core kit of 1-2 spare tubes,
steelcore levers, glueless patch kit (got tired of finding dried-up
cement), cell phone, and whatever pump fits the frame or bag.

Commuting i'll add a lunch (usually in a tupperware container) and
usually a musette or other bag in case i need to grab something from
the store that doesn't fit in the bag.

On longer rides i'll have up to 2 tubes plus mini chain tool and 3
spare links (mainly for the singlespeeds), spoke wrench and a shop
rag. Non-bike stuff in there includes camera, maps (if needed), spare
t-shirt or light jacket, gloves and snacks.

If anything, i've learned that i tend to overpack, so i've been
whittling down my load, especially for long day tours. The first
century i did i probably brought 4 lbs of food with me, and still had
about 3 by the end of the ride.

[RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-27 Thread reynoldslugs
p.s. An iPhone is the tool I use the most, actually keep it in the V-
Bar bag. Thus I sneak out in the middle of the day, do a 2 hour ride,
stop at the top of the hill and return emails to clients across
country, with clients serviced and none the wiser.

I know this wasn't Ed Zachary what you were talking about, but it's
still my most-used cycling tool. When there is no traffic around,
just reach into the bar bag and do a quick check for email. I am not,
however, one of those dufuses (dufi?) that talk on the phone while
riding. I may be a dufus, but not of that particular species.

[RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-27 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Bill: You had three pounds of extra food??? I was probably starving!!!

My natural tendency is to carry a large saddlebag or pannier and add a
tube to it every ride. A couple times a year, I'll clean out the bag
and realize I'm carrying 25 tubes more than I need and the small
saddlebag weighs 50 lbs. But, I'm trying to cultivate my latent
minimalist. I have a couple trips planned in the next few months
during which I plan to travel light. Minnehaha medium saddlebag for 3-
day outings, etc.

A few years ago there was an article in the Reader about gearing
written by a friend/customer named Dave Siskind. Dave is closing in on
500,000 miles lifetime and has ridden across the continent many times.
Some photos from his tours show his heavily loaded riding buddies and
Dave looking like he has just enough for a weekend outing.

An alternate strategy is to carry little or nothing and rely on the
kindness of strangers and ride partners.

I carry the following:
Showers pass touring jacket, multi tool, spare tube, patch kit, saddle
cover, winter gloves, tire irons, extra prescription eye glasses,
spare wool socks, elastic headlamp for roadside repairs on my bike or
riding at night to see where I am turning, maybe or maybe not a flask
with whiskey when its cold, my camera, when I get one.a small cook
stove and coffee making stuff, usually a spare zip tie, probably will
start to carry some first aid stuff along with T.P. and or course some
food, cash money, wallet, and a cell phone. This goes in a Carradice
Nelson Longflap saddlebag and if I run out of room I strap on my Hobo
bag.

[RBW] FS: 58cm brand new Atlantis

2010-01-27 Thread joe werth
hadn't gotten a chance to post this with the hours in my days filled up with
who-knows-what, but I have an Atlantis to sell. And it's brand new. I bought
it at Rivendell in August more or less for a birthday present to myself, and
upon further research, have found this not to be the optimal frame for
me.(i'm looking for more of a lighter weighted tubing bike for
randonneuring.) I took it outta the box, did away with the box, and on a pad
in my bedroom it has sat. I've never attached any component to it, and
haven't even removed the metal plug from the seat tube. although I did peel
off the clear plastic cover over the front head badge.

If you're interested, I want to get what I paid for it which is right at
$2300 plus professional packing and shipping. Unless you live in the bay
area and we can arrange to meet.

if you have any questions or wanna see some photos, please respond offlist.

thanks
joe werth

2010-01-27 Thread Matt Critchlow
That looks really nice, great job! I'll be on the lookout for that
bike, probably not many like it around here in San Diego..

[RBW] Pa Panniers Listing on CL - SF Bay Area

2010-01-27 Thread CycloFiend
Not mine, don't know the seller.
But, you don't see these offered up too often, so I thought I'd let the list
know:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/1573829896.html

Rivendell Baggins Panniers - $150 (berkeley)
Date: 2010-01-27, 3:38PM PST

These were rarely used, about 5 years old I'd say. Just never carried that
much stuff.
Sorry I don't have a better picture, doing this at work and no net at home.
They are the Pa Panniers.
They are large.
They fasten with a stick!
Here's some pictures I found on the web, but keep in mind that mine are the
tan cotton like many other Baggins Bags, not the dark color.
I have all the original nylon cord that came with them. And the sticks of
course.

http://www.cord.edu/faculty/sprunger/bikes/pa/
http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2006/cc131-frankfulton0706.html

$150 or best offer.

Local Sale only. NOT SHIPPING.
