I've seen the Berthoud saddles in the flesh (should that read leather)
and they look awful compared to the Brooks.
The back is plastic, the leather is mottled and the shape loots
malformed. They might be a dream to ride, but
just on looks a Brooks wins.

The Cork Berthoud saddles are tanned with a natural process, so every
one looks different. Maybe I got lucky, but mine looks rather nice in
my eye anyway.

The plastic back allows for additional flex, thus the added comfort.
I've had B-17s and find the Berthoud to be more comfortable.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's the right saddle for a Roadeo?

2010-03-20 Thread PATRICK MOORE
That's my experience with B-17s. The only one that has been comfortable is
the one on the Sam with bar flats just under an inch higher than saddle;
though I ride a lot in the deepish Noodle drops. The only factor that makes
me anxious is the chafing of the, you guessed it, nose in the crotchal seams
(sorry!), but if I lower the nose I am afraid I'll destroy the hammock like
comfort of the rear part of the saddle. I'll put many more miles on it,
first, then, if it seems unlikely to be suitable for multi-day riding, I'll
try to adjust the tilt. But I have a Flite in store, just in case.

The Pro *is* comfortable, for me, with bars 2 below saddle; but again, the
tilt was impossible to fine tune just right after 12 or 18 months; either
goosed or sliding onto my hands.

On the Geared Hub Yahoo List, there was a recent saddle discussion. Someone
mentioned that the women's Team Pro-S has the same width as a B17, but a
shorter nose. I don't know if the top is as flat as a B17, but that sounds
like a real good compromise!

[RBW] Stuff For Sale Update

2010-03-20 Thread Ted Durant
Thanks to all those who've inquired about my for-sale posting. Photos
of the two frames are now available at:

http://gallery.me.com/teddurant#100031

To reiterate, the Bridgestone XO-1 is a 1992 42cm (C-T), 26 wheel,
standard reach sidepull frame, with original fork, headset, and bottom
bracket. The bike belonged to my 5'2 wife, who took the seat height
close to the max of the seatpost and never could get the mustache bars
high enough. She now rides a Glorius with Albatross bars ... problem
solved. Both our daughters rode it for a bit, but they're now 5'4 and
it's definitely too small for them.

The Shogun is a mid-80's model-unknown 43cm (C-T) 700C wheel, standard
reach sidepull frame, Tange Prestige tubing, full Dura Ace 7400 group,
36H hubs with Torelli Master rims. I bought it 2nd hand, mostly for
the wheels it had at the time (Superbe hubs, Araya titanium rims, kid
you not), but also hoping one of my daughters would want to do some
fast riding. Alas, that never came around.

As you can see in the photos, they are both in excellent condition.
The XO-1 has a few decal and paint nicks here there. The Shogun is
almost perfect, as it's hardly ever been ridden (though the wheels
have a few miles on another bike).

I would prefer to sell the Dura Ace parts as a group, but if they
don't move that way, I'll entertain offers by part.

I don't have any prices in mind. I'm not looking to make a killing,
just hoping somebody will want to ride these, so just make an honest
offer you think is reasonable.

plastic frame, you can ride it in the rain without worries about
sagging or keeping it covered to protect it from the elements. When I
rode a B17 (which I didn't care for too much) and a Team Pro (which I

According to the Kogswell list, this kind of attachment seemed
correlated with shimmying problems. Check http://tinyurl.com/ybow223
for a solution if you have fork crown rack braze-ons like on the
Bomba. The removable legs introduce another possible source of flex.

Or how about a Nitto Mini Front, a big Wald basket, and home-made
supplemental struts to the dropout braze-ons? Attaching those securely
to a Wald basket however won't be easy, given the small diameter of
the Wald wire.

[RBW] Re: Chris K's Roadeo

2010-03-20 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
My down-tube shifter mounts were NOT an option: I had Joe Bell and his
team file off the stock cable housing braze-ons and then braze on the
down-tube shifter mounts when they had it for the paint. I had
Rivendell send it to JB with just primer on it to get the custom color
I wanted (Toyota's Barcelona Red as seen on the Prius and perhaps
other models). I have bar-end shifters on many of my bikes, but never
warmed up to the look of the housings, nor even the shifters. I've
used D/T shifters off-road before (which this bike was purchased to do
often) and they are not always ideal in certain bumpy, hair
situations, but I don't mind the compromise of a clean, aesthetic look
and very snappy shifting in exchange for having to sit down on
occasion to shift gears (actually, you just have to stop pedaling to
shift if you want to stay off the saddle).

I don't know what this bike weighs. Sorry. I don't have a scale and
don't really care that much. If I were guessing, which I will right
now, I'd say 18 pounds, but I really don't know. My main three other
bikes (RB-1, Kestrel 4000, and I forget which other) all weigh 21
pounds with 7-speed freewheel, 28-spoke, quill stem set-ups. Obviously
this Roadeo has much lighter features when just considering those
three factors. I wasn't trying to go super light when I set it up.
Literally I just used stuff I had laying around. The only new stuff I
purchased for this build were the derailleurs and chain.

I'll post more photos when I complete the second build-up, which will
eliminate the carbon parts and bring back my traditional Brooks
Swallow with ti rails. I'll have three wheel options so this will
truly be the one bike to rule them all - As seen currently with
fast low spoke count Ritchey race wheels and 23mm Ritchey tyres; or
with Chris King hubbed 32-hole wheels with 32-38mm cyclocross tyres;,
or with Dura Ace hubbed 32-hole wheels with 33mm Jack Browns. I
suppose, just for fun on occasion I can put on some tubulars when I
pretend I'm racing RAAM again with a pro mechanic behind me to change
my flats (which never occurred over 3,127 miles), so there will be a
fourth wheel option to silken the ride even more.

nearly 3 year old. I'd recommend it. I had a bamboo basket thing on
the back for a while and I thought it was a steal at 3 bucks. My wife
was riding behind me and she started screaming at me to stop because
my daughter was standing up no hands in the thing. The ability to
strap her down is a plus. We also have a Burley trailer. If I was
riding in traffic I'd go with the child seat as it's not so
obtrusive. If I was mountain biking (mellow stuff mind you) I'd put
the kid in a trailer. I have rolled it with her in it (going slowly
over a root!) and she was laughing. That wouldn't have happened if
she was in a child seat. I think I'm coming off as a crazy parent
herewell I love my kids and I think about their safety all the
time. Bobike Maxi works very well.

etc.  Its truly wonderful.  She's right there and can see everything

the Mini, the 4 year old will go on the back, likely on a Bobike Jr.
I'll miss her up there!  I mean, does it get any better than this?

[RBW] First Brevet of 2010

2010-03-20 Thread Mike
Wow, what a day. This was my first brevet of 2010, my third time
riding the Birkie 200k, and the first time I ever rode it without
rain. In fact, the weather was awesome. A little windy on the return
trip but overall fantastic, especially considering that it rained for
the entire ride last year and most of the ride the year before that. I
started today's ride with 2 goals, first to finish and second to
finish under 8hrs both of which were accomplished. My finish time was
7hr 52 min.

Besides the fantastic weather other things came together to make this
ride a success. I remained fueled and hydrated throughout the ride. I
rode my Hilsen and it handled fine with no mechanicals. Last year I
rode Jack Brown blues for the brevet series and wasn't completely
satisfied with them. While they are a sturdy tire they felt a bit
dead. Earlier this week I put some JB greens on and have to say that
they are an entirely different tire. They felt so much faster. I had
no problems with flats which I was worried about considering they're a
lighter weight tire. Tentatively my plan is to use them for the 300k
although that route does take in rougher roads with more debris.

It was great to see people from last year and after the ride I had
food with some fellow randos. Just can't get enough of talking about
bikes and randonneuring after a great ride like that.

Awesome! You're inspiring me to try the rando stuff. Keep the pics coming!
I'm itching to try more than the 50 miles I did a few weekends back. I've
been thinking about getting a rando bag for the front now that I have a
large Acorn bag for the back (yep, y'all talked me into getting that last
black one...) Today would have been a perfect day in Seattle, too - sunny
and mid-sixties. Hmmm - I gotta get out of the spring cleaning mode...
