[RBW] Re: Fenders and Speed
I don't think my riding is slower when riding with fenders you could probably measure it and you would probably be infinitesimally slower. The benefits of having fenders would certainly outweigh any slight drop in speed I'm sure. I don't usually transport my bike and have never had the fenders get in the way when I do. You probably have a brake shoe rubbing or the wheel could be angled in the frame after installing the fenders, causing drag. Is your tire rubbing inside the fender ? If not, ignore the mild paranoia and ride through some mud puddles. Happy trails !!! = ) On Nov 1, 8:51 am, Eric Norris wrote: > Any thoughts from other riders with fendered bikes about whether they make > your bike slower? How about natural cork? I had a sage green all-rounder that had that combo and it worked well. One idea - take a Paul Gino mount for the front fork and install the computer there. Could use a wireless and make it look really clean. That way, you'd have the info, but not be distracted by it. I have Thick & Zesty green camo on one of my bikes. Really like it, but it does feel different. Looking at the Soma site, would think the cork Aqua would look like a nice contrast with the frame. Just watched. Very impressive, for the speed, the handling -- and, for me, how they managed that deep sand with such skinny tires: I know sand, and their performance in that spot is amazing. I've been buying up cloth tape as I see things that strike my eye. Next time I need to wrap a bar I'm going to select from my inventory. I even bought some pink Newbaum's because I thought it was so cool that the NFL did a breast cancer awareness thing and wore pink accents on their uniforms for a couple weeks. Almost anything would look good on a color like that. Here are several that I think would look dynamite: White cloth, clear shellac Black cloth, any shellac Dark blue, clear shellac Orange, clear shellac Red, amber shellac Brown, amber shellac Light grey, clear shellac Dark green, any shellac Two tone--celery green with any of the above, clear shellac On Nov 1, 9:04 am, Mojo wrote: > My 2001 road custom is my favorite & most ridden > bikehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/79695...@n00/400392025/in/set-7215760747... > It is also has had the most stable parts list. [RBW] Re: The takeover is progressing
I bought this Cateye cheapie to use almost exclusively for trip distance. I want to gradually work up my mileage (actually kilometerage) to do my first brevets in 2011. The unit shows current speed in big numbers and whatever function you want below. I have it set to trip distance and probably will not push another button except to reset it. I am running it set up for kilometers so I have very little feeling for what the current speed even means. I know 30km/hr is brisk, and that 20 is slow but a pace I should be able to maintain more or less indefinitely. I'm a huge numbers guy, but I love cycling. Part of what gets me out on a cold rainy day (like Saturday) is the motivation to get my pitiful 30km in. Once that got me started, I just enjoy the ride. My Saluki runs at the same avg with/without hammered honjos. [RBW] What color bar tape, or tape plus shellac, for a Sage Green frame?
My 2001 road custom is my favorite & most ridden bike http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695...@n00/400392025/in/set-72157607471577085/ It is also has had the most stable parts list. The only changes since 2001 have been varying saddle bags and a change from Dream to Noodle bars. But for the last few years, I have grown bored with the over- engineered brifters. The front brifter is especially silly with only two positions needed, all out or all in. My one orphaned Simplex left downtube shifter has been calling, lately screeming, from the parts box. So Sunday before all the Hallow hoopla, I had 4 hours for myself. I rode 1.5 hours and wrenched for 2.5. Off came the brifters, on went the now-happy Simplex left and a bar end right. To me the bike just feels and looks right now. (By the way the bike weighed 1oz less with this setup compared to Campy Veloce brifters on my Park hanging scale.) Finally to my question: the above picture shows a white cork handlebar tape with reflector tape built in. It never 'matched' but at least it was cushy and reflective functional. That was changed a year or so ago to a cork grey. All I had yesterday was a light foam/cork grey tape. That didn't look great so I put on a layer of amber shellac, a first for me. Now it looks like leather tape. Not bad, but not a 'match.' Wasn't there a Riv suggestion list for tape and shellac for each of their main frame colors? I perused the Riv and Cyclofiend Riv websites with no luck. By the way I can't do cloth. I served my cloth time back in the 70s; never again thank you. Anyway any suggestions? [RBW] Re: Fenders and Speed
I'm remembering a Bicycle Quarterly wind tunnel test which concluded that front fenders reduced drag slightly, and rear fenders increased drag slightly. Maybe it's the years not the fenders that are slowing us down? The only disadvantages I have found with fenders are that many bike racks do not easily accommodate them, complicating lock up, and neither do most car roof racks, requiring extra care in selecting among the more limited choices. Anyway, it's 30 degrees with a light wet snow falling in VT, so right now, I'm more concerned with slowing down when I hit the brakes than when I hit the pedals. The most memorable part of this show, aside from meeting Peter Weigle and admiring his fine work.. Riding the Bombadil is just such a pleasure. I got a few admiring looks on my Bombadil. In fact, I was talking to a young frame painter from Bilenky and young frame-builder Marie of Folk Engineering (Newark, NJ-based!!!), and when I mentioned I had parked my Bombadil outside, their immediate reaction was "That's YOUR bike? We were both admiring it"... I attached a Wald basket to my Platrack, and it was SO nice to just toss my small duffel in there and not worry about it... I also added a Zimbale saddle bag to carry my pump, tools, etc... I've got to do more pedal/train travel like this... It's a great way to travel... leave the car, take the bike, and hit a distant destination all in one day...fun stuff. Am thinking for next year a different set of tires might be in the best interest of the bike. Probably Pasela 35 as they are lying around. But who knows? Don't really want to go any skinnier than 35. Actually would put on 37s if I had them. Maybe will score a pair by next spring. Eric Platt -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: The takeover is progressing
I like having a computer, following que sheets in the land of missing road signs is a challenge, besides I can't hold a consistent enough speed to use an E6B on a bike. ;-) Notes, Berthoud fenders stop cateye wireless dead, so do SON hubs, back to wired comps. A Cateye version of the old Lucas Milometer would be cool. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] WTB 68cm Atlantis Frame
Hello! I'm on the look-out for a 68cm Atlantis, preferably just the frame, but would gladly welcome offers for frames with parts at the right price! The bicycle will be built and used as a full-time commuter and carry- groceries bicycle, while my A. Homer Hilsen will be used for everything else. I'm hoping to build it up as a 1x7 or 1x8 and fit it with albatross bars and Fat Frank tires for a relaxed, solid and cushioned ride. Thanks to Peter (http://www.flickr.com/photos/beardedpeter/3870914885/ in/photostream/) and John (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ 32919...@n04/5102689331) on Flickr for providing inspirational photos of your Bombadil and Atlantis – well done gentlemen! If any member of our Riv Family is seeking to place your 68cm Atlantis in a good home please note that I take excellent care of my cycles, keep them clean, and ride them daily. I'd love for this to be my commuter/porteur bicycle! Thanks in advance for sending your replies to me directly rather than the whole of the group. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Again, it's just too fast. not sure why this controversial. these folks ride through mud, sand, obstacles faster than most people can ride on pavement - and at the highest levels, the combination of pure speed and skills turns any disadvantage - like having only one gear - into huge time deficits in an hour long race. >Or are all the ss-ers of lower caliber? No. Not at all. It's just that multispeeds are simply faster. The fastest sscx'er I know of is Marko LaLonde. he won the SS championship, but finished 51st in the pro field with riders on geared bikes. he now rides a geared bike in order to compete in that field. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Morning commute on my new Atlantis
Kevin and Rene -- Thanks for the info on the Guadalupe trail. I had never heard of it. I'll give it a try one of these days. Ray From: kevin lindsey To: RBW Owners Bunch Sent: Sun, October 31, 2010 5:14:13 PM Subject: [RBW] Re: Morning commute on my new Atlantis Ray - Give the Guadalupe River Trail a try. I use it on my daily commute between Santa Clara and south San Jose. As Rene said, it's hard packed dirt beginning somewhere north of 237 (as far as I've taken it in that direction) to San Jose proper. It's virtually empty, very quiet, offers beautiful scenery and, with the possible exception of a hundred yard stretch near the airport, looks fairly waterproof. If you have to go further than San Jose, you can catch the Highway 87 bike trail just off GRT that continues to Almaden or, with a bit of jinking through some neighborhoods, the Coyote Creek Trail that'll run you all the way down to Morgan Hill. Anyway, give the GRT a look. Re: [RBW] Re: 1950 rough stuff race
Are the ss-ers of the same abilities as the Cats in question? IOW, would a cat 1 on a ss possibly competitive against his own category peers on multispeeds? Or are all the ss-ers of lower caliber? I know Bruce Boyson of the boblist, an avid and very experienced offroader, is usually at the front on his rigid 29er ss's with his multispeed, suspended peers, tho' that may not prove anything wrt cyclocross at high levels -- only mean to point out that, in some circs, ss can be very competitive. Ignore if not relevant. On Sun, Oct 31, 2010 at 4:44 PM, Patrick in VT wrote: > On Oct 31, 12:20 pm, Beth H wrote: >> >> Indeed. Re: [RBW] New Roadeo pics
Lucky you. I want one. Someday ... Tell us how it rides. 1X9 drivetrain, say 48X say 14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-28 -- wish it fit dt shifters. Light, ~ 25 mm tires -- the bigger diameter (I am used to 559 or 571 road wheels) will make the wheels roll like 559X30s. Look Keos or Dura Aces. Nitto 44 cm 185 on Pearl stem. VO gr cru setback seatpost (what is the st angle? If < 73*, a nice old Dura Ace instead). Cyclotourist or, better, Stronglight 49D crankset with single ring. Phil ti bb. Small seatbag. I can dream, at least. On Sun, Oct 31, 2010 at 6:04 PM, reynoldslugs wrote: > Just picked this up from the LBS.
