Hi all:

I just came across this amusing post on the Boston Craigslist.

http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/bik/2358812458.html

Obviously no relation to the seller. Seems curious at best...

[RBW] Re: Hunqa photos, and Albatross HB question

2011-05-03 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi, Bill.

I'm glad the folks at RBW are helping. I'm sure you'll stabilize the
bar unless the stem itself is problematic.

I use Albatross bars with a Dirt Drop 100 with a shim with mo
problems, even on torn-up roads and hoof-beaten trails. Maybe not as
bad as what you've got. But I weigh ~245. Never a slip.

I'm curious... what's your PBH (without shoes)? How's the standover on
you Hunqapillar? What size tires do you use? I'm trying to decide
between a(nother) 60cm Hillborne and a 62cm Hunqapillar. I'm not a
crotch worrier, really. But I'm also not insane and have no desire to
buy a bike which promises grievous bodily harm with every dismount.
Unfortunately, I think it's the 62 or no Hunqa for me; I really like
my bars way up there.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

I spoke with Jay who consulted Mark at Riv.

Next logical step is blue loc-tight on the bar and shims.  Gnurling
(gnarling?) or roughing up the point of contact was discussed, but is
better suited for shim-free situations.  Stay tuned.  If that doesn't
work I'll consider an old-school 25.5mm mountain bike stem similar to
the one I've got on my X0-1.  I'm thinking, 12cm and about as flat as
they used to make 'em would work

I like the Albatross bar for offroad; I think they climb great on
crazy steep stuff and feel good going down loose fire roads, and you
can shift and really keep your grip at the same time. Not my first
choice for super-steep and rocky, rooted downhill singletrack, but if
I were riding a chair lift in Tahoe I'd probably rent a bike to fit
the terrain.  La Hunqa is perfect for my neighborhood :-)

In the back of my head is the quickie bar conversion using cable
splitters to a bullmoose configuration.  I had a Nitto bullmoose-type
bar on an '82 SR mountain bike and h'bar failure never even entered my
mind, and that's a good feeling for an old fart that doesn't bounce
back from crashes like he used to.

 Happy trails,

  Thanks for the reply, Minh.

If the stem were about ready to close on itself (i.e., get to the
point where both sides of the stem clamp were touching) then I would
try the bigger ship option.  Never underestimate the power of the beer
can shim :-)    However there is still plenty of room for the stem to
  tighten before this happens.

I'm thinking, maybe a steel mountain bike stem (25.4mm) with a wider
clamp and 2 bolts (if such a thing exists)?  I'm sure the lugged stem
would hold a drop bar or mustache bar (26.0mm) just fine - it's just
the leverage you get on a 'Tross that makes this an issue, I think.  I
mean, on the road this is a non-issue, as it holds just fine.  It's
bombing down rocky trails at speed where it'll give if you hit
  something hard

Has anybody ever tried scoring the shim with something sharp in order
to make a less-smooth surface?  Or is this just dumb??

  Cheers,

Thanks for mentioning this Jeremy, but yup indeed, I've got a Nitto

I wonder if anybody has a trick o' the trade?  The bar, stem, shims
and clamp are devoid of grease (though the binder bolt has been
greased liberally).

On May 2, 1:18 pm, Jeremy Till jeremy.t...@gmail.com wrote:

This may be obvious enough that you neglected to mention it, but do
you have a shim in the bar clamp, since the lugged stem is 26.0 and

I really like the Albatross bar set up on this bike.  Being able to
lean back a bit when descending lends confidence, I think, and I
  like
touring with this kind of bar.  However, I've got a vexing issue: No
matter how hard I cinch the binder bolt on the lugged stem, the bars
will still move a bit when going through rough spots at speed.  Does
anybody have any suggestions to help sure this up?  I replaced the
stock binder bolt with a higher-tensile strenght variety, but still
have snapped a few trying to get sufficient bind on the bar

I found that I have to angle the grip ends of the bar downward
somewhat in order to keep my hands from slipping forward on the bars
on steep, rough trails, but the amount of downward slant you see in
the photos is after slipping somewhat and is a bit more than I like.
Frankly, I'm getting a little paranoid about that little binder bolt
failing on me at an inopportune moment

People seem to love or hate M-bars. They took some getting used to for me, and
getting them up high enough really helped. Now they are my preferred climbing
bars (We do hilly training rides 2x a week April - August). You can get
surprisingly aero on them for fast descents as well.

Please confirm if you will be joining us; otherwise please don't
 forget to cancel your reservation.

 The schedule:

I will arrive Friday evening (exact time TBD; aiming for around dinner
time).  I am staying at the Sherwood Motel.
 My cell is (908) 303-6887

SAT AM - Assemble at Wellsboro Village Green at 8 AM.  We will depart
shortly thereafter.  Our Saturday route will feature the 44 mile
Wellsboro Route, which takes us down through the Pine Creek Gorge.
 (see
 link:http://pinecreekbikerides.com/Bike%20Rides/Wellsboro%20Loop/Wellsboro...).

Sunday - Riders' choice:  There are several great rides in the area
(see web site -http://pinecreekbikerides.com), I thought we'd allow
group consensus to determine the route; otherwise I might recommend
one of the Colton Point loops (since these provide options for those
who need to leave earlier on Sunday to travel home).  Personally I
plan to depart for home in the early afternoon, so I hope to get in a
4-5 hour ride in the morning.

I plan to bring light rain gear, but rain or shine, I am REALLY
looking forward to this weekend; I hope you are too.  I am trying to
contact local rider Bill Yacovissi, who hopefully can give us an idea
 of the dirt road conditions.

For those planning to arrive on Friday, if you would like to meet on
Friday evening, give a call or send a text once you arrive... I will
try to stick to my self-imposed curfew of 11 PM.

Hope to see you at the Rally!!!

This may be blasphemy to some, but you might try to get the saddle
wet, or just damp, and then go for a ride. I have done that
(inadvertently) with brooks saddles in rain storms and they do tend to
break right in after being ridden wet. Farthest I've gone in a day
is 135 miles though, after which my whole body hurts. YMMV.

P.S. there was another thread on here recently about Bethoud saddles
twisting on the rails, for which there seemed to be a special clamp
you could get as a preventative measure.

cool. no better way to learn about your bike.

you want to grease just about everything - all threaded bolts and

thought regarding things like greasing bb spindles, but when in doubt
(and when common sense tells you otherwise - e.g. don't grease your
stem clamp and handlebars), grease it and don't be shy about it.

beeswax is optional, but may be used anywhere that you might want a
little extra stick-um on bolts/parts that are prone to loosening-up/
backing-out a bit over time. personally, i've never used it, but i've
never had anything so incorrigible that it needed to be tamed by
beeswax. it's a nice, natural alternative to loc-tite and more

I wore a light short sleeve jersey, a light long sleeve jersey over
that, and brought a windbreaker. The windbreaker lived in a jersey
pocket all day. The longsleeve jersey came off and got stuffed into
the handlebar bag at mile 35 or so. Doug's sweatsoaked wool
longsleeve baselayer went into MY handlebar bag at the top of McEwen
(harumph!) and ended up going home with me. I guess that was the
equivalent of rocks. I had a phone and wallet in one small pocket and
the camera in the other small pocket of the Hbar bag. A canister of
trailmix and three larabars were tossed in there too with an extra
tube and keys.

[RBW] Re: Crappy Pasela Sidewalls

2011-05-03 Thread Mike S
That's interesting, I actually find the Marathon Supreme 35mm's to be
really zippy on my QB, more so than the Jack Browns I had on at first.
That might just be the $138/pair premium biasing my perception
though...

The Schwalbes really are solid tires, especially in the wet and
considering the toughness factor. I'll be interested to see how much
treadlife they have, considering the pricetag. At about 1200 now,
hoping they make it to at least 4000.

And BOO to Paselas. Though I may try to boot the sidewall and ride
them into the ground, just out of spite.

On May 2, 10:30 pm, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote:

put some Duremes on it. Even the new rando bike is sporting Marathons

with others. Most of the time I ride alone and they feel fine.

Please confirm if you will be joining us; otherwise please don't

 The schedule:

I will arrive Friday evening (exact time TBD; aiming for around dinner

Hope to see you at the Rally!!!

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj6ho1-G6twfeature=fvwrel

So that began my current pondering... what Rivendell would be what
you'd want to use if you were trying stuff like this? Would you want
a Bombadil or a Hunqapillar, or would that be too heavy? Would a
mixte be a better choice? Perhaps a Betty Foy w/ a trimmed down seat-
 tube?

Wow. Yeah. If. ;^)

IF I had those skills, which I most decidedly do not, I wouldn't hesitate to
run any of the Riv frames. My guess would be that you would go through more
wheelsets than anything. But, steel, mmm perfect for serious,
repeated stresses.

Of course, I'd have to veer from the teachings in that I'd want the smallest
frame I could get my hands on, with the clearance for the largest possible
tires. Disc brakes wouldn't be an option, so I'd want something that took
canti's (and would have to go back to the old trailsin' trick of tarring the
rims for extra sticky). I'd think the best tire size to use would be a 26,
as that's where you are going to find the big round profiles which give all
that pavement slapping goodness when you are running 10-15 lbs o' pressure.

So, I think you are looking at an Atlantis.

Ohand the technique that Danny has. ;^)

This is the stuff I mentioned previously:
http://www.campmor.com/birkenstock-cork-life-2-oz.shtml?source=CIci_src=14110944ci_sku=91642WC

If it's just a couple threads popping up on the sidewall, it seals 'em

concern. Tyvex USPS Priority Mail bags work GREAT for that.

The Schwalbes really are solid tires, especially in the wet and

treadlife they have, considering the pricetag. At about 1200 now,

[RBW] Lighter Wheel Set Question

2011-05-03 Thread Bruce Oppenheim
I would like to ride a lighter wheels/tires set on my A. Homer Hilsen
at times when just riding paved roads.

I have a pair of Mavic open pro wheels from another bike with road
bike hub spacing (130). My A. Homer Hilsen is (135). Since the Mavic
hub spacing is a bit narrower, my question is... will it hurt the
frame to squeeze the rear dropout to fit the smaller hub? I don't want
to stress the frame.

Thanks,

It would probably be easier to just add a couple 2.5 mm spacers (or even 2's

I'd been using on a 130 mm spaced frame.

[RBW] Re: Lighter Wheel Set Question

2011-05-03 Thread charlie
I did this on a 135mm frame I have making the 130mm rear hub I used a
133mm. This is exactly what the Surly Crosscheck was advertised to be
able to do with its 132.5 mm spacing.fit either size axle. Chrome
moly steel bends quite a bit before it stays bent ( no pun intended )
so I would add spacers and as long as enough axle is in the dropout
you should be fine. It might be better to get a longer axle and add
the spacers rather than trying to make a short axle work although I
did it with my frame.

hub spacing is a bit narrower, my question is... will it hurt the
frame to squeeze the rear dropout to fit the smaller hub? I don't want
  to stress the frame.

It would probably be easier to just add a couple 2.5 mm spacers (or even 2's
or 1.5's) to the axle.  That's what I did to use a stock DuraAce hub which
I'd been using on a 130 mm spaced frame.

I'm not sure I've ever heard a definitive word on whether the bending would
be bad, but it's easy enough to fix.

RE: [RBW] Lighter Wheel Set Question

2011-05-03 Thread Joe Bartoe
Hi Bruce,

The AHHs are supposed to have 132.5 spacing. Unless you've altered that, you
should be able to use 130 OLD wheels just fine. I did that on mine.

Best,

Joe

Michael,

Is this what you were thinking of?

They are available at many military bases, or online vendors:

This setup is still working great btw.
