[RBW] FS: Sugino XD 600 triple crankset

2011-06-24 Thread GSE
I am selling a Sugino XD 600 triple crankset. It is a 26/36/46 with
170mm crank arms. 74 x 110. It is marked as a 7/8 speed, but I
believe it will work with a 9 speed. You will need to research this
on your own to determine if it will work on your bike. I had it on a
9 speed and used it for one 20 mile ride and discovered that I had
ordered 170mm crank arms instead of 175 mm crank arms. My loss is your
gain. It is in the original box and is in excellent condition. It is
essentially new. I am asking $79.00 including shipping in the lower
48.

[RBW] Re: Thumbies vs BEs

2011-06-24 Thread MichaelH
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Between this list and the
tandem list I have gotten a number of good suggestions.

First, I have used chain stoppers in the past but somehow had
forgotten about them, but adding one to the tandem could solve at
least one problem. I am also grateful for the observation that
thumbies can cause some thumb fatigue on extended rides. Since we are
about to set off on a 240 mile sojourn in Quebec, this probably isn't
the time to do that. Besides, one of the best things about BE is the
ergonomics, which far exceeds brifters and even DTs. Besides it
reminded me of why I have never considered them in the past. On a
single I do 60 % of my riding on or just behind the hoods and 30% on
the drops, I only occasionally use the center of the bars, so thumbies
wouldn't really be all that convenient for me. On the tandem I'm on
the hoods 80% of the time.

I am also considering a moved to ramped and pinned rings. I have not
found them to be all that beneficial on a single, but some people on
the tandem list recommend them. Tandems put an enormous amount of
pressure on the drive train and I have managed to train my stoker to
know that when I say I'm going to drop the ring, she needs to let up
on the pedals, but it's easy to get in a situation and discover that
the gear you thought would take you to the top, wont, and we're
pushing hard to keep going. When we bought the tandem I outfitted it
with a good used DaVinci tandem crank ( a great crank, btw, I have one
on my single touring bike too) and then put some used Shimano 600
rings, a 50/36/26, setup. I think I could probably do less shifting
with a 53/39/28, but want to think about that.

Steve and Joe have pointed out, quite correctly that BE's do shift
very rapidly when you have both hands on the drops. But, I have two
caveats. Our riding tends to be, as I wrote, on rural back roads,
about half of which are dirt. We're not out for speed, but rather
enjoying the country side, and so that tends to keep me up on the
hoods. Of course I could train myself to ride the drops more when I'm
in the hills, but that is most of Vt! Second a tandem is not like a
single. Ours is quite long, with two long TTs and long chain stays to
accommodate panniers. The two riders, the bike, water, and a couple of
small bags, tools, and a pair of jackets brings the total weight up to
about 385 lbs. When you're barreling along a dirt road or a broken
section of chip and seal, the added sense of control from being on the
hoods is quite welcome. Tandems really like to mostly go in a
straight line, until the stoker starts squirming around!

Finally, for the suggestion that I go over to the dark side. If all
else fails I will consider brifters, probably campy and either add the
jtec shiftmate, or convert the White hub.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Ribbit Brakes

2011-06-24 Thread Damian
Hi Jason,

I have them on my Quickbeam. As you mentioned they have no toe-in
adjustment. I've never had problems with squeaking though. Their main
disadvantage compared to, say, Tektro CR720s is that they haven't got
microadjustment screws so you have to get it right and tighten the
main bolt. That said, if you take your time it's not a problem in my
experience but I have a park tools cable puller thingy... makes it
much easier.

So, all told, unless you prefer the aesthetics of the Ribbit brakes,
I'd get the Tektros - why not make it easier for yourself.

[RBW] Re: Thumbies vs BEs

2011-06-24 Thread Earl Grey
Why not raise the bars so the drops become a more comfortable and more
controlled-feeling option? On most of my bikes I have ridden on the
hoods most of the time because the bars were always on the low end of
the acceptable range. On my Sam I jacked up the bars to accommodate a
stem-mounted child seat, and now find myself riding the drops a lot
more, and enjoying it. In MHO, BEs give the fastest double shifts and
suffer the least from fatigue and soreness issues, though Campy Ergo
isn't bad, either. Right now I have BEs on 4 out of 5 bikes, and rapid
fire shifters on the mtn tandem, which will probably be replaced by
BEs at some point. I have had Ergos on two bikes and liked them.
Another couple of arcane options: Kelly Take-offs or Suntour Command
Shifters (my ex had them, and I liked them, but they do require thumb
force, and I'd say they are slower than BEs). I think BEs rock, though
my next project will have DTs (first DTs EVER for me; I reserve the
right to convert them to BEs later).

Good luck,

Gernot

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Ribbit Brakes

I have the Ribbit brakes on one bike. I also have experience with
Tektro Oryx as well as older cantilever brakes.

When Mark put Ribbits on my Bianchi - he showed me how he secures the
post of the brake pad in a vise, and gives the pad a gentle whack to
create toe-in. So far, they have worked fine. Not as much power as the
Tektro Oryx - probably less than the CR 720s as well.

If I were you - I would go with Tektro Oryx or CR720s. Tektros are
much easier to set up.

Just a bit more clarification on the ride. Registration actually closes
today (Friday) at 5pm. Check-in for registered riders begins at 6am, not
registration. A modest lunch offering will be provided at the finish so an
exact number of riders expected needs to be known in advance so that
volunteers will know how much food to have ready.

[RBW] Re: 52 rambouillet taking 26 wheels...can it be converted to 650b?

2011-06-24 Thread William
Most likely no it wont. 650B rims are a full inch larger in
diameter. 584 vs 559mm

Imagine the fattest 26 inch tire that Ram will accept. Subtract a
half-inch off of that width. That will be the fattest 650B tire that
you could take. The Riv geometry chart for the 52cm Ram says that
26x1.3 is the widest recommended. That means you'd have to be able to
find a 650Bx19 or something like that.

To convert a 26 bike to 650B the best candidate is a bike that starts
with clearance for super fat tires to start with. For example, if you
want to take PariMotos at ~38mm, you'd need a frame that fits 26x2.0
to start with. Even bigger if you wanted to fit Hetres.

Re: [RBW] incredible slow loading of this site

2011-06-24 Thread Jim Edgar
Okey - dokey

Here's what seems to be the deal. Google migrated the groups over to a new
format, and is semi-redirecting things to that new location. It seems to
load much faster if you go directly to the new Forums fomat, which can be
found here:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/rbw-owners-bunch

So, just to divert comments about this -

1) Yes, it's a different presentation. I liked the older way too, but then
again, I was just used to it. In a couple weeks, you'll probably never miss
it.

2) Yes, it makes you reestablish your google ID connections, no longer using
your previous image or moniker. No, I don't know why. If this vexes you,
please direct your wrath to the folks at google, rather than share it with
the group.

3) The discussion can still be enjoyed via email, rather than the site.

All-righty, that's enough list-adminy stuff for a Friday

[RBW] Update on RBW Owners Bunch Web Discussion

2011-06-24 Thread Jim Edgar
For the past week, accessing the RBW Owners Bunch via the web interface has
been akin to downloading images over an analog modem - pokey and filled with
weird time-out errors.

Here's what seems to be the deal. Google has been migrating all of the
groups over to a new format, and is semi-redirecting things to that new
location. It seems to load much faster if you go directly to the new
Forums fomat, which can be found here:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/rbw-owners-bunch

So, just to divert comments about this -

1) Yes, it's a different presentation. I liked the older way too, but then
again, I was just used to it. In a couple weeks, you'll probably never miss
it.

2) Yes, it makes you reestablish your google ID connections, no longer using
your previous image or moniker. No, I don't know why. If this vexes you,
please direct your wrath to the folks at google, rather than share it with
the group.

3) The discussion can still be enjoyed via email, rather than the site.

From my point of view as list admin, it does allow some other controls, such
as Locking a discussion or making an Announcement as opposed to a
discussion thread, and always displaying it at the top of the list. In
fact, I'll probably do a couple of those things to this post, so folks
continue to see it. I'll dig into things a little more next week.

All-righty, that's enough list-adminy stuff for a Friday

[RBW] Re: Future Rivs

2011-06-24 Thread Philip Williamson
I'd like to see a Rivendell bike trailer with a Nigel Smythe bag like
this Jack Taylor / Goëland in Bicycle Quarterly:
http://www.bikequarterly.com/images/GBwTrailer.jpg

And a production version of their ill-fated Mountain Fixie, optimized
for drop bars. Ideally, with a limited run of Cunningham drop bars
like they did with the Bullmoose. Derailler hanger, kickstand plate
and fender mounts would be acceptable, but I'm not talking about an
overbuilt Fargo rig with 40,000 braze-ons. Just a fun, light, knock-
around-in-the-woods bike with a long headtube and a long seatpost. Any
wheel size would be fine. A complementary super-rise Nitto threadless
stem, either lugged or not, painted or not, would be a fantastic
bonus.

I'd like to see that more than the trailer, but it's about as likely.

[RBW] Re: Thumbies vs BEs

2011-06-24 Thread Michael Hechmer
Yup, I could do that. I set up the tandem to match my singles, which all
have the bars about 2 cm below the seat. I find this a nice compromise for
a reach to the drop and control of the bike when I stand up. But since my
stoker doesn't like to stand up I could raise the bars a bit. It's an ahead
set up, but i left two spacers above the stem for this eventuality.

Re: [RBW] incredible slow loading of this site

2011-06-24 Thread Aaron Thomas
For some reason, my interface already migrated quite awhile ago. I can't
even remember what the old one looked like and certainly don't miss it! If
yours hasn't migrated, you can do it yourself by clicking on the link to
View this group in the new Google Groups, which should appear on the right
of your screen if you're already in your group. From the main Groups page,
instead, the link is called Preview the new Google Groups. Just click and
go.

Changing the way you choose to view it to the new Groups format should
resolve loading speed issues, as the new Groups interface loads lickety
split.

I was holding onto them to build a new 650b wheelset but I think I

I am open to trade the hubset for a nice 130 spacing 650b wheelset.

and almost poured it on the hoods. Down the hatch instead.

Won't isopropyl alcohol dry the hoods out?

[RBW] Re: Removing crud, grime dirt from gum brake hoods?

2011-06-24 Thread William
maybe it would dry out real gum rubber if you soaked in it. Just rub it on
and rub it off, and you should be fine. If it's fake gum rubber, like
anything modern, then it won't matter even if you soak in it.

I noticed that they now sell a budget bandanna for those who found the

Or you could just order a $2 bandanna from RBW.

[RBW] FS Son Hub Edelux

2011-06-24 Thread Jonathan Mitchell
Thought I'd give this another go before heading off to the Bay..

I bought both of these for a project that is on hold for a long while and
can use the money more than these beautiful parts sitting on my shelf :)

The hub is polished silver, 32 holes, with skewer, manual and connectors.
Perfect condition, took it out of the box to admire then put back gently.

The light is black and comes with the 140 cm cable. I took it out of the
package (just a plastic ziploc) only to make sure it lit. Simply pressed the
ends of the wire to the contacts of a dynamo wheel spinning in a truing
stand. Comes with manual and connectors.

I have photos I'd be happy to send if it's helpful.

New on Peter White cycles the hub goes for $253 and the light $195 plus
shipping

Asking $215 shipped for the hub and $165 shipped for the light, $370 shipped
for both.

I haven't seen these ever on sale, so I think these are fair prices. Let me
know, would love these to get some use!

Also willing to consider partial trade for a black Brooks B17 or a Selle
Anatomica

Thanks,

Jonathan

Okey - dokey

Here's what seems to be the deal.  Google migrated the groups over to a new
format, and is semi-redirecting things to that new location.  It seems to load
much faster if you go directly to the new Forums fomat, which can be found
here:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/rbw-owners-bunch

So, just to divert comments about this -

1) Yes, it's a different presentation.  I liked the older way too, but then
again, I was just used to it.  In a couple weeks, you'll probably never miss
it.

2) Yes, it makes you reestablish your google ID connections, no longer using
your previous image or moniker.  No, I don't know why.  If this vexes you,
please direct your wrath to the folks at google, rather than share it with the
group.

3) The discussion can still be enjoyed via email, rather than the site.

All-righty, that's enough list-adminy stuff for a Friday

- Jim

[RBW] 1993 Bridgestone BUB for sale -- $150

2011-06-24 Thread RetroGrouchy
In case anyone here may be interested, I'm offering up my 1993
Bridgestone BUB for sale. It's not in primo shape but it does ride
well and includes the original fenders and kickstand. The original
catalog listing is below -- this is the 50cm variety and will fit
pretty much anyone over 5'6 or so. I definitely don't want to ship
it, so local pickup only in Longmont, Colorado.

The sticker in the picture is from University Bicycles, where this
bike began its life as a rental. I've tried peeling it off and it's a
slow go -- however, it will come off and the paint underneath is in
nice condition. I just haven't finished messing with it.
