Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam/SO Gearing Help
I agree; I don't see the point of two rings on a ss/fixed (so called) unless you want more than two ratios or if you want really big gaps, say a high range for pavement and a low range for off road, with small axle movement. You get a lot more variation for each tooth by increasing or decreasing the number of teeth on the cogs than on the rings. Me, I'd rather fret about whether I need to change the cogs on my Riv now that I've installed the Kojaks with a diameter of 25" in place of the Turbos with a diameter of 24", giving me a 72" gear instead of a 69" gear (46X16 on the cruise side). I could swap out the 16 for a 17, for a 68" gear, but then would the drop to the flip side cog, an 18, be big enough? I'd have to change that, too, to a 19. Or, I could change the 46 to a 44, but I have far many more 46s than 44s, and what happens in that purely theoretical future when I have racked up so many miles that I have worn the teeth on my two or three 44s to mere nubbins? Fret, fret, fret. Let's see what other artificial problems I can cause myself. Seriously, I am not fretting, but the moral is that a 2 tooth gap in the rear, from 16 to 18 as above, will give you a 8 gi difference (72 to 64) while two on the ring -- 46 to 44 -- will give you only a 4 gi difference 72 to 68) (that's how half stepping was invented, no?. Re: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Kojaks
Thanks. I hope to get a ride on the new tires tomorrow: too much work, hacking to get the tires to fit the fenders/front rack, and car trouble/conversations to find time today. It's a custom made by Chaucey Matthews who lives in the area. It's beautiful and stiff, but in hindsight I ought to have given him the bags I wanted to use, since neither of the two pairs that I had worked well with it (tho' I got a very good deal on a pair of smallish Jandds that do work very well). The front is just a cheap VO rack. On Tue, Aug 23, 2011 at 7:12 PM, Tom M wrote: > Beautiful bike. One thing i've noticed is that people really like to keep the amount of wheel movement to a minimum, either by taking advantage of small teeth changes in the rear only, or keeping the front spaced really close together. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam/SO Gearing Help
My set up is nearly the same as Charlie's - just with lower gearing. 36/32 front 16/19 rear. I live in the mountains so the lower range works better for me. Incidentally, my setup offers nearly the same range as the stock QB gearing of 40/32 x 18. I ride around town in 36x16. I only use the lower gearing when I have a long mountain climb or I'm commuting with a load - although I can't remember the last time I actually switched gears. With a one tooth difference between tine gear set ups, my fender line looks great and my axle runs about midway in the slot. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I like the double cog in the rear, too. I think the chainline is better, and the axle doesn't move in the dropouts. As you get bigger tires and fancier fenders, you lose a lot of adjusting room. I use a 17x21 dingle fixed cog, and I have some different cranks with 40x44, 38x42, etc. The 32x21 was a great climber when I had that on, though. Re: [RBW] FS: All Rounder
What a nice bike. My first custom Riv Road, early 1995, was based on the original AR, with 753 frame and 531 fork, 42.5 cm stays and (don't remind Grant!) 54 c-c st, 56.5 tt -- the last 26" wheeled Curt custom is a 58 and I ride a 60 cm Herse. Grant decreased the front-center slightly and used road tubing. lugs and crown (biplane!). It use calipers and would take a 35 mm tire with fenders, just. It handled well with 32s but was a bit twitchy with 23s; my later two were considerably different -- 45 cm chainstays, slacker head, and handle better with skinnies. BTW: tho' I sometimes wish I had asked Grant to build mine with larger clearances -- it would be nice to try the new Compass 42s without removing fenders -- I have absolutely no real complaint about my two remaining customs; they are wonderful bikes and my benchmarks for everything cycling -- even the Herse, nice as it is, was chosen with reference to the fit and feel of the Rivs. Were I to do things again, I'd consider going 622 and choose a 72 instead of a 73 seat tube (Grant urged me, but I stupidly refused), and would like to see if we could eke out another 2 mm of fender clearance with normal reach calipers, but otherwise, I'd not change a thing. I've also run Hetres, Pari-Motos, as well as Col de Vies at D2R2. I agree w/Patrick - it's a toss up between the Pari-Motos and the Hetres. If the course is choppier than normal, I'd recommend the Hetre. There are sections where you'll want one over the other, but for the most part, depending on conditions, I'd give the nod to the Pari-Motos. You can only descend so much faster than others on narrow, rocky, pot-holed, water-bottle-strewn roads before scaring the skinny-tired cyclists as you pass.
