[RBW] Picture of first bike tour

2011-11-01 Thread Manuel Acosta
5 years ago:
The picture above is one picture that sums up my first bike tour down
the pacific coast. While riding down Hwy 1 Duy sees a sign that he
thought was a bike trail. Little duy-we-know that this trail was a
single track mountain biking trail. We rode it anyways without knowing
if there was an end to the trail. All in the sense of adventure.

Today:
Saw my second car accident while bike commuting to work. Both
accidents were really bad wrecks. Both just miles away from school.
Makes you realize in life there are no promises. On the ride back home
I came the conclusion that if anything happened to me I would like my
friends and family to commemorate my life with a bike tour down the
pacific coast. Funerals always seem so dreary to me. Best way to
celebrate my life is to share it with something that I enjoy.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Grip (Color) Ideas

2011-11-01 Thread rperks
Contrast on the color wheel says Neubaums bright red with garnet
shellac, or maybe the purple with a lighter shellac. Think something
the color of a nice cabernet.

Trust the color wheel, it is usually right.

[RBW] Re: Shimano CX70 cantilever?

2011-11-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have no experience with these but they look so much like the 550s that I
can't believe they don't have all the problems the 550 did. I set up a
pair of those with Ultegra levers and found set up very difficult and
breaking power, even with salmon pads, mediocre. The levers required so
much travel that the pads had to be placed almost on the rims. For this
kind of money I would suggest you spring for Paul's, which are a breeze to
set up, offer great stopping power, and will last as long as Grant's frame.
The one feature RBW trumpets, that they use short pads and open up wider
is nice, but not as nice as stopping on a dime when you need to. If I
couldn't afford the Paul's then I buy the Tektro hi profile brake. Harder
to set up, won't last as long as Paul's, but will stop your bike when you
need them to.

RE: [RBW] Shimano CX70 cantilever?

2011-11-01 Thread John Speare
I've not set up the R550's but I've ridden them and they're the brake that made
me buy the CX70, which ahs a similar fixed straddle cable set up and geometry.

W/out looking/comparing the two, I'd guess the 70's are shimano'd - nicer
finish, and slightly lighter - than the 550's, but it's possible they could be
a different geo.

If you like brakes where you squeeze the lever all the way through to modulate,
then you'll dig these brakes (both 550 and 70's). Set up properly, the levers
don't bottom out, but you get a full handful of braking to skid.

If you like more of the v-brake feel, where you're instantly grabbing/stopping
when you grab the brake, then you may not like them as much.

I think that you'd find a 64 cm LHT to be WAY too small. If you don't find
a used Rivendell frame try looking for something like an older 27" (68 cm)

[RBW] Atlantis Frameset for sale

2011-11-01 Thread kaseri
I'm selling my Atlantis frameset. Frameset is in excellent condition. No
rust, no dents, I've always taken excellent care of this frame. Frame/fork
has Frame Saver applied. I disassembled the bike last night and touched up
the paint on the usual spots such as the rack mount points and the
dropouts. There are a handful of spots on the frame which have had touch-up
paint applied. The head tube has a couple of spots where the shift/brake
cables have slightly discolored the paint but the paint is in tact and has
not rubbed through. The bottom bracket threads have been chased as well.
This is one of the last Japanese built Atlantis frames. Two months after I
bought the it Rivendell moved production of the Atlantis from Japan to the
USA. All in all I would consider this frameset to be rated an 8 out of 10.

Size is 54.5 cm

Photos can be found here -

The frameset will be professionally packed/shipped and fully insured by a
local professional shipping company that specializes in shipping large and
unusually shaped items.

Asking $1100 shipped & professionally packed. (all reasonable offers will
be considered)
PayPal preferred
