Re: [RBW] Re: Slingshots!
I love home made weapons -- they are crude enough not to pose any real danger unless the user is insane or a monster. In high school I made a few slings (the David versus Goliath type) that would hurl an unripe avocado over 200 yards (I think the world record, but with something denser than avocados, is 400 meters). Never could aim them well, though. (Our three acres included several avocado trees that bore abundantly of fruit that sat on the ground and rotted.) A bit younger, at 12 or 13, I made effective blowguns out of 1/2" pipe, 3 feet long. Darts were made by placing a needle at the far end of a toothpick and diligently winding thread around the junction until it met the pipes interior diameter; nail polish kept it all nice. These were good for 30 yards or more -- but the only thing I hit was a holy cow (they ran loose in New Delhi) and that purely by luck. I was as surprised as the cow, which did a jump and ambled off. Also in HS I made firecracker matchlocks (my father told me about using plumbing pipe and cherry bombs to fire golf balls; this would have been in the 1930s). I made my own bullets out of solder melted over a fire and poured into a home-carved mold. Loading involved carefully installing the cracker, little finger-sized for the arquebus, at the bottom of the sealed tube so that the fuse stuck out of the hold cut near the breach; then wrapping the ball in a small piece of greased cloth and ramming it down. A smoldering cord clamped in a pivot sprung for activation by a below-stock lever lit the fuse which would then slowly ignite and, eventually, fire the cracker and eject the bullet. I tried shooting birds with it, but by the time the thing fired the birds had casually looked around, yawned, and flown away. I don't know how powerful the arquebus was, but a much smaller derringer using a smaller cracker in a 3" barrel with roughly 75 mm bore punched a hole through the bottom of a large, sturdy tin can (Kimbo, Kenya's answer to Crisco, used to come in gallon cans) from 5 feet; the can was perched unsecured on a hedge and the force was such that the ball punched a clean hole through the tough bottom of the can without budging the can's position. And then there was paraffin/kerosene incineration of hundreds-of-meters-long, massed trails of army ants -- but that I don't have to apologize for, as these were very dangerous to confined, young and disabled life. In case you haven't clicked through all the photos, here is one of my friend's carbon handlebars, which snapped off when he fell onto his left side while at a stop: http://tinyurl.com/7uhbvoc The break looks nasty (fortunately, he wasn't hurt, as he was motionless when he keeled over due to double leg cramps), but keep in mind that these bars have been in heavy use for almost six years. Re: [RBW] Photos from the Weekend
I rode PBP using a 72-inch gear, although in retrospect I would have geared a little higher. Riding from CA to Kansas in 2006, I rode the first week in 72 inches (over the Sierras, across the mountains of northern Nevada, and over the Wasatch). I started gearing up after that. By the time we started crossing the flat eastern half of Colorado, I was in the 80s somewhere. By comparison, having a 44-inch gear to get into on the climbs yesterday was sheer luxury. --Eric N Sent from my iPad2 On Jan 16, 2012, at 12:51 PM, PATRICK MOORE wrote: > Eric did P-B-P on a Quickbeam and rode across the US, west to east, on a > fixed -- climbed the Rockies in -- what was it, Eric, an 80" gear? > > He's not natural. > > On Mon, Jan 16, 2012 at 1:42 PM, Anne Paulson wrote: > On Mon, Jan 16, 2012 at 12:31 PM, Eric Norris wrote: > > I rode Patrick's former Motobecane down the California coast from San > > Francisco to Monterey and back this past weekend. You make me wish I'd kept it. I may eventually buy an old but decent road frame (Roadeo has verticals, alas) and set it up with an AW or Shimano 3 sp hub; this for coasting and minimal hill climbing ease. 44" seems pretty darn low after climbing hill in a 72"! [RBW] Another ebay item I'm selling: A very Rivish and very inexpensive crankset
I probably should have offered this here first, instead of wasting a week of my life on ebay, but I listed a bunch of stuff, and listed this, too. It's a lowish end Sugino crankset. 172.5mm arms. Triple, 130/74 BCD. It came as a 52/42/30, but I bought a Spot brand chainguard and ran it briefly as a 42/30 compact double. It's like an ultra affordable Keven special. Comes with a generic cartridge BB. It's used, to be sure. [RBW] Re: Sayonara Jay Day
When Sweetie and I visited Riv HQ during a Bay Area swing a couple of summers ago, we "kidnapped" Grant for a lovely "power lunch" around the corner that lasted nearly two hours. When we returned Grant to his environment obviously more relaxed, he settled down on his giant feldenkreis ball-cum-office chair, and got back to work with a smile. As Sweetie and I looked around the showroom for a quick peek and some possible shopping, Jay came up to me, smiled gently and whispered, "thank you SO much for getting him out of here for a couple of hours!" "Is there a problem?" I asked, sotto voce. "No, no, no problem," Jay assured me, "it's just that Grant eats lunch at his desk a lot. He takes really short breaks. Works a lot." He paused, snuck a glance at Grant and whispered to me, "Now and then he forgets to eat altogether. It's really busy around here in the summer, you know." That's the kind of fella Jay appeared to be in our brief encounter. Caring and sweet in a quiet sort of way. I wish him all the best in sunny, funny Arizona. [RBW] Re: Touring Load and Packing list with weights
That's great you can buy them now. My friend built one using a Platypus bladder, some tubing, and First Need Filter. We first used it in Tehipite Canyon in King's Canyon, so we called it the Tehipite Water System. And on that trip we were much better hydrated b/c water was so "cheap". Just fill, hang, go do something else and you have overflowing potable water. The problem with boiling is that you need a bit of fuel- as if your'e converting it into water. Filtration I think is much better. As for the rest of the packing list, seems like the hammer isn't very multi-use and heavy. If you're sleeping on tundra, it's like natural Therapedic. Miles of it. The best natural mattress I've ever slept on. Didn't unpack the Thermarest. And, of course, very easy to stake into. I agree about the coffee press, which to be sure, is a complete sign of civilization. But isn't a trip to AK about putting some distance between you and civilization? Which is why I would lose the iPad too. :-) stay off the grid for a couple weeks. Bring a journal and a couple good paperbacks (John McPhee's Coming into Country comes to mind, Michener's Alaska, or even Travels to Siberia by Ian Frazier, which in its own way is similar to these lands). Be sure to bring bug juice. In Denali, we had to walk around while eating our food; you could swipe your hand in the air and catch a zillion skeeters. Gross at first, but you get used to it. We used Sawyer's Gold, with up to 20% DEET. Beyond that apparently doesn't add any benefit. The mosquitos came within 2 in. of your face, and stayed away. Oh, a bandanna is also a great blind fold to keep that midnight sun out (4pm sunshine at 8pm; midnight hikes in full light. Surreal.). Great trip!
