[RBW] A few shots from NAHBS

2012-03-03 Thread reynoldslugs
I stopped by the show for a short bit on Friday, to say hi to some
builders I've known over the years. My shots are not the greatest
quality, but see below:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157629499867669/with/6948065325/

A few comments: The show was kind of overwhelming for this old dog.
But, great to see some old and new faces, and reacquaint old
contacts. The show was more about saying hi and connecting for me, so
I apologize I don't have a lot of technical bike content. But,
anyway, here goes:

The Six Eleven -- Aaron and Michelle - - a very nice young couple.
Their bikes are not terribly flashy (that's a good thing), but have a
solid, classid appeal. Vendetta and Six Eleven, along with Shamrock,
are on the top of my list after talking with them.

Vendetta - very much enjoyed talking with Conor and Garrett. Low-key,
knowledgeable. Their purple bike ought to be in contention for best
in show, ATMO.

And speaking of ATMO (Sachs): nice chat with Richard S. He's so
knowledgeable and gracious, recalled the details of the frame he built
for me (and our discussions) from back in 2003. A very interesting
fellow.

Roland Della Santa - - this guy is great. No b.s., quick turnaround,
should get the award for Framebuilder Least Likely to be Lampooned on
the TV Show Portlandia.

Tony Pereira - - also a gem of a fellow, with jewel-like bikes. ATMO,
he's the real deal - - solid builder, no b.s., beautiful stuff. A
regular guy who builds very cool stuff.

Mo Rebolledo - - local boy makes good - - another really nice guy.
The paint schemes on his bikes are classic, lovely, and unique.

Shamrock - - another very knowledgeable guy (Tim), great to talk
with. Beautiful work.

Tom Ritchey - - never met him, not likely I ever will -- he looked
like a rock star with the crowd three-deep around him. Wanted to ask
him about one of his limited editions, but the crowd was just too deep
in his booth. Happy to see Ritchey is now producing nice new silver
seatposts, handlebars, and stems.

The Brooks Saddles booth looked like an over-the-top set from
Portlandia. The whole knickers, tweed, and handlebar moustache
thing... I'm just sayin. Still, Brooks is Brooks, and I love their
stuff.

Hope those that made it to the show had a good time.

[RBW] Re: Weight

2012-03-03 Thread Joe K
My custom Riv was built for all-round road riding with possible light
touring. Do-it-all. (Sidebar: this was because I'd always been used
to having only one bike so it didn't occur to me to have different-
purpose bikes.)

The Riv always seemed very light to me compared to the other steel
bikes I'd owned. Still does. I now have an old Univega for a beater,
and it sure seems heavier.

One day I happened to notice the shop where they service the Riv had a
bike scale. It turned out to be 26 lbs unladen. I had it in my mind
that it was lighter than that, but so what? It's definitely light by
my own comparisons, and no other bike I've owned has been such a joy
to ride.

[RBW] Still looking for 64 SH, 62 Hunq, 64 Bomba, 67 AHH

2012-03-03 Thread Jared Volpe
I'm sold. I just don't have the money for a new one right now. So I'm
looking for a used Riv. If I don't find one soon I'm going to break
down and buy a 64cm Surly LHT but it will likely be too small. Save
me from this fate!

I'm 95-96cm in the PBH. Comfortable with a seat height of 83 - 84cm.

I'm looking to do some commuting and short ( 1 week) tours. Fire
roads, back roads, etc. Seems like a lot of Rivs would fit the bill.

According to Keven@Riv the following frames would work:

64cm Sam Hillborne
62cm Hunqapillar
64cm Bombadil
67cm AHH

Do you have a Riv you want to sell? Drop me a line if so.

'til soon,
Jared

Come on light bikes are fun, so are light motorcycles and light cars. All
for one reason, they go fast.

My fat man bike is fun too.

Thanks for posting. The Ritchey commemorative bike looks awesome (though
I'm not crazy about the massive Classic decal on the top tube). The Della

 67cm AHH

It's not mine and I don't know the advert but there is a 64cm atlantis

[RBW] Re: Weight

2012-03-03 Thread Philip Williamson
Gravity Knob! I've thought about weighing my bikes, but usually don't.
Any upgrades I've ever done to them have added weight. Fenders,
dynohubs, racks, leather saddles. Drop bars. I'm looking to move back
to the Bay Area, where I can get by with narrower tires, since the
roads are better, and maybe have one road bike without fenders. I do
want to photo-document each bike - weight, equipment, etc. so I can
refer back to it next Spring and see what I've done in 2012. I wish I
had that to look back on for the last 10 years, so the best way to
have that in the future is to start now.

Anyway - digression within digression. My Quickbeam rides differently,
and I ride it differently, with 40mm tires, metal fenders, front
basket, dyno hub and flat pedals than I did with 28mm tires and
Eggbeaters on NJS track wheels.

But how much does the gravity knob weigh?

 then wow.

Of course weight matters.  I like music, so I'm willing to carry an iPod or
even a harmonica on my bike.  I'm not willing to carry a piano.  Why?
Because it's too heavy.  Weight matters.

If there was a gravity knob on your bike that allowed you to dial down the
weight for free, you'd turn it.  Why?  Because lighter is usually better,
 if it's free.

In real life, light weight usually has its costs.  Either it costs not
bringing something that you might want, or it costs money, or it costs
something else like work, or looks, or a perceived downgrade in
reliability.  Those who say weight doesn't matter are those that are really
saying I could go lighter, but don't want to, because of the cost.

[RBW] Light weight! (And Low Bars!)

2012-03-03 Thread PATRICK MOORE
(That ought to raise hackles!)

I just did a nice out and back on the Rio Grande bosque trail (the
paved one) on the (Riv, fixed) gofast and boy did it feel good. A
strong, gusty (NW 20 gusts to 28 per NWS at 1:56 pm for 87120)
somewhat mitigated for much of the route by the trees lining the path,
so a nice spin southbound and a slog in the hooks on the return. 75
gear: I do have a 17/66 on the flip side but I usually ignore it and
did so today. It is **very** appealing to find your groove -- just
the right amount of effort that takes you to the brink of anaerobic
but not over it and lets you, therefore, maintain the effort and pace
in comfort but still pedaling energetically. I didn't time myself
because that is a drag (didn't used to be).

The Riv with the Grand Bois Maes Parallels is **just right** with bar
some 3 cm below saddle: I rode in the hooks with elbows bent for 8 or
9 of the return 11 miles. These are wonderful bars if you can get by
with nothing wider than a 39 cm at the hoods (they do flare a bit at
the ends). Mine are either 37s or 38s and for my long (Asian) torso'd
5' 10 they are just right.

The 650CX23 mm Conti GPs, if judiciously inflated, are surprisingly
cushy (I favor roughly 90 psi, a bit lower in front) on the tree root
upheavals, but the path is pretty smooth except for these and these
are mostly south of Central/66; not as cushy as the 559X1.35 Kojaks on
the other Riv but still very nice -- I realize that this depends on
weight; I am a rather hefty 175; could stand to lose 20 lb, well, that
was my college graduation weight; let's just say 165 would be nice at
57. If you want **harsh** over inflate your Big Apples: the 622X60s at
45/50 are damn' hard! (Even worse: 1.25 Fatboys inflated to the
sidewall 110 psi: bricks!)

[RBW] Lugged steel road frameset for sale

2012-03-03 Thread William
Not necessarily Riv-like. It is very Bridgestone RB-1 like, though. My
custom Davidson is up on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/260970814484?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

It's lugged steel and MUSA, so there's that. I'm replacing it with a road
frame that takes wider tires and fenders. This won't take anything wider
than a 700x25, although I did use it for a time with 650x33B. More photos
of complete bike setup(s) on request.

[RBW] FS: Mavic/Phil Wood Touring Wheels

2012-03-03 Thread SISDDWG
Great loaded touring wheels:

Mavic T519 and T520, 40 front 48 rear.
Phill Wood front hub 40, rear Phil Wood 48 7spd threaded freewheel
130mm.
DT 14/15g spokes.

Maybe 3,200 hard surface miles on these wheels with approx. 25 miles
on wet surface. I don't ride in the rain, therefore much less wear on
brake surface. They are as true as I could ever imagine a wheel could
be.

I also have a NIB Mavic T520 (maybe T519, same) 48 hole rim.

Two wheels price $400 plus actual shipping cost.
One NIB rim price $75 plus actual shipping cost.

Local pick up in Montara, CA is perfect.

Re: [RBW] NAHBS

2012-03-03 Thread William
Rich Lesnik was there. And after we left my son and I ran into Jay Ritchey
and his dad Tom having lunch. Without question the highlight for me was
the people that I got to talk with. I did take about 50 pictures of bikes,
though:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/sets/

Joseph Ahearne was a real nice guy. His designs are really exploring new
space. He had a snow bike, and a Monster Tour, and an urban mixte with a
kiddie seat on the back.

I interrupted Tom Ritchey's lunch and yet he kept asking me questions about
my reactions to the show. The free beer and 40 Anniversary Ritchey pint
glass was a touch I didn't mind telling him I appreciated. It was really
great to see Jay, since I didn't get to say goodbye to him when he moved to
Arizona

Mitch Pryor was also a real good guy. I admire his earnest motivation to
keep MAP a one-man-show. He's young but he's got a wise vibe to himself.
Of the young turks I have to say he might be my favorite

Steve Rex made the effort to come out, despite the massive 8 blocks of
travel from his showroom to the convention center. I'd say it is
extraordinarily likely I'll be buying a frameset from Steve in the near
future. He's a pro, knows his niche, and does delicious and clean work.

Jay Sycip heads up Cielo (Chris King). I really like his passion for the
real end to end craft of bike making. His fire for his ideas is really
infectious and inspiring.

I had a nice long talk with the son of the founder of White Industries.
I've talked a lot about the ultimate compact double crankset. I'm saving
up for a 48/32 VBC crankset, after discussing a couple details with him
that I'd never noticed before.

Turns out Stevil Knevil of All Hail The Black Market is a very old friend
of mine. It was kind of a high-school-reunion kind of moment. I had no
idea that he was him.

We only got about 3 hours but it was a thrilling afternoon. It was a good
day to spend with my son.
