Eric:

Thanks for posting; have you posted that bridge before? Looks
familiar.

The B&W pix that you & Manny have posted are really a treat. Maybe
the novelty or maybe color is just clutter; don't know but there is
something uniquely appealing about the simplicity. Love it.

[RBW] Re: widest Atlantis 700c tire??

2012-06-09 Thread dougP
Mike:

I've been using Schwalbe's Marathon Supreme on my Atlantis for several
years with good results. My riding is mostly pavement but I don't
hesitate to wander off-road on these. I started with 35 mm & have
been using 40 mm for a little over a year now. I have fitted a 50
with no trouble; 46 mm actualy width at 50 psi on a Mavic A 719 rim,
with lots of frame clearance.

If you want a more off-roadish tire, Schwalbe's Mondial looks pretty
good & goes up to 47 mm. The Extreme seems to be fading away on
Schwalbe's website; only 26" listed now.

I've been happy with Schwalbe but I'm sure Continental et al make
comparable tires. Someone out there will correct me if I'm wrong but
I think you can be confident stuffing anything in the 50 mm / 2" width
range into an Atlantis. I run 50 psi & have to nudge the 40 mm thru
the front brake but it's no big deal.

Funny thing - here in Minnesota, Ritchey bikes are more than somewhat
rare. Except for Time Mc's road, I've only seen one or two other bikes in
almost 30 years. Maybe it's just me. Then again haven't seen a Fat Chance

Must be me.

Tourists going 'round the world are best off with a 559 tire size, which are
available everywhere. China, India, the middle of Africa, South America, North
America, Europe. You might not be able to get the perfect tire but you can get
a tire that will get you to somewhere that can provide you with the tire of
your choice.

How aggressive a tire are you considering? A trekking / expedition or

Re: [RBW] widest Atlantis 700c tire??

2012-06-09 Thread James Warren

Before getting any answers, you have to know how old your Atlantis is. The
first couple of production runs had less clearance than what became the norm
for the Atlantis.

I'm planning on joining the ride after the signing and am throwing a
vote in for Marin but am up for anything. I'll just be in the bay area
for the summer, so a group ride will be great. Thanks for getting this
together.

[RBW] Re: A Ram, Rom and AHH on a 600k

2012-06-09 Thread Mike
Toshi, yeah, great write up and congrats on finishing the 600k. I
guess you earned your SR with that ride. Any more randonneuring plans
for the year?

Glad you're enjoying your Hilsen. It's a great bike for brevet riding.

Last weekend I finally made it across the border to ride with Seattle
International Randonneurs (SIR) on their Olympic Peninsula 600k. It
was a fantastic ride with incredible support at the SIR staffed
controls (1 each day with an overnight control). As usual, I rode the
first 100k way too fast and paid for that with cramps which eventually
subsided. Managed to get into the overnight control at 10:45pm and
asleep by 11:30 which allowed me a nice 5hrs sleep. I've come to terms
with the fact that I'm not willing or probably even able to ride
straight through. Besides, why not break it up into 2 nice long days
of cycling? The second day went well with no cramps and I felt really
strong through the entire ride. My Bryant randonneur worked well and I
feel pretty well prepared for the Cascade 1200k at the end of the
month. Here are some pictures:

Re: [RBW] Re: What’s Driving the 650B Explosion? Interviews, Tech Breakdown & More! - Bike Rumor

2012-06-09 Thread Eric Platt
Strange, from my personal riding perspective, I've come to prefer wider (37
to 40mm) 700C tires. Whereas, my attempt at liking 650B was so sub-optimal
I shall refrain from trying again.

The handling seems to work best for me with those tires. And there are
sufficient tires (and bikes) available to make me happy.

Am trying to decide if 26x2.00" is also worth keeping. As it may be more
useful on midwest gravel roads.
