[RBW] Ram 650b with Hetre conversion update 2--test ride, thumbs up!
Hi all, Greg, thanks for your offer on getting a little more reach, and Franklyn, I took your advice and used V-brake pads, which are skinnier (but longer), and that was enough to get the Tektro 559 to work! What a great group with great advice! The only minor drawback is that there may not be as much clearance when the brakes are opened, so I may have to deflate the tires to make it through the calipers... OK, so the test ride, wow is all I have to say! Within 10 feet of riding the Ram with Hetres, I knew I had a keeper. The bike feels so stable. It inspires tremendous confidence. The Tektro brake pads, though, lousy. I swapped back to the kool-stop salmon I used previously--much better! I had no issues with the BB height. I did a curvy descent (Shepherd Canyon for the locals). The bike was so stable and the traction felt so good, that I was extremely confident in my descent. The bike felt fast, and the tires were so stable. I'll take some pics tomorrow to show the tire clearance and my current setup (although I plan to add a front rack and fenders soon.) My feeling is that the conversion is a huge success. I would highly recommend it for others who may be wondering. Re: [RBW] Re: Anybody try a 650b Ram with Hetres?
I'm wondering now if there is a way to convert a canti frame/fork designed for 700c? Without moving canti studs or creating a method of mounting the canti's lower with some sort of Frankenstein's bolt on arrangement I guess it's not feasible? Probably not necessary as most 700c canti frames offer enough clearance for reasonably wide tires, but this thread got me wondering. Re: [RBW] Saddle bags hit backs of legs?
The Sackville XS and Brand V Keven's bags (I have the former) are basic not-very-large seatbags..not near big enough to hit with your legs. My small frame Ram rides on 559 wheels, and there is not enough clearance to use a 584. It will accept a 37mm tire though, and that is what is on the bike. It rides really nicely. For any 26 cantilever-braked bicycle, if it has clearance, such should work. Going the other way, from a 700c to a 650b, works for caliper-braked bikes, with longer calipers (ala Tektro). And there's where the simple ways end: to go the other way, to from a 700c to a 650b on cantis, is going to be moving posts. Re: [RBW] Re: Re; How many Riv owners also stable Bridgestones?
Does anyone add suspension stems or seatposts to Rivendells? Long ago, pre-Rivendell, I used a Softride plus an early (CODA) suspension seatpost on a conventional mountain bike and found the setup very comfortable on washboard -- hard, 35 psi 1.95 tires, of course. I hear the Thudbuster is good. I probably would not bother for my current offroad bike, the Fargo, but if I ever set up a dedicated mountain bike, I would consider a suspension stem and good suspension seatpost -- but would not want the complexity and weight of a fork or rear suspension -- I think. Had the chance to ride a bit with Tom Ritchey yesterday (he was in town for his induction into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame). Re: [RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
I've found it's not about shipping costs it's about shipping pain-in-the-assness. If I ship something in the US I don't have disclose what is in it or worry about customs or anything. If I do the same to overseas I do. Having shipped something to korea once and had to go through a million questions and even THEN have to play whack-a-mole with customs on the other end just to get the goods to the recipient I understand why someone would want to avoid the mess. It's not about distrust of YOU it's about dealing with irritating officials. -sv On Sun, Nov 4, 2012 at 4:16 PM, Jay in Tel Aviv jayin...@gmail.com wrote: I have been fairly active on this list since I got my Sam last summer. [RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
I don't buy and sell on line as much as I did a few years back. Most of my dealings were with people in the U.S. and Japan, but I had some successful transactions with people in Europe, Israel, Mexico and South America. Probably unfair to paint an entire continent, but I would block Africa from my eBay listings because of some weird communications that came out of Nigeria (in my defense, at the time at least eBay only let you block all of Africa and not individual countries). The most troublesome international deal I ever did was with an apparently eccentric person out of Canada. His auction was open to the U.S. so I bid and won. But then he did not want paypal, a cashiers check, or credit card. Rather he wanted me to send money via a bank transfer. I took an hour off of work, did a bunch of paper work, followed up and verified the payment went through only to have the guy send me a bunch of angry e mails complaining about some fee HIS bank added on the back end of the transaction. The transactions with Israel were a walk in the park by comparison. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I bought a 56 proto-Bombadil that RBW was selling last week. I built it up today with whatever I had on hand so I could ride it. Re: [RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
U.S.A... U.S.A... U.S.A... I've noticed how a LOT of people don't want to ship intl on ebay. I kinda' like buying stuff from Canada, GB, France, or wherever as I figure there are a lot of people that are scared to buy it. You know, because of terrorists. Re: [RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
I've never had any trouble purchasing from foreign merchants on Ebay, as long as they are doing business using PayPal. I've gotten cameras from Russia, lots of stuff from Hong Kong and Taiwan, and a few other odds and ends. My real problem isn't dealing the folks in foreign countries, it's all the folks only willing to ship to CONUS as I live in Hawaii. I've checked on shipping prices and sometimes it's actually more expensive to ship from the west coast to the east coast than it is to ship to Hawaii - and, at least for small items, priority mail one-price boxes are the same everyone in the US, CONUS or otherwise. I get it with big items but small stuffsigh. I've often thought of selling a Brooks saddle I don't need (B-68) but putting non-CONUS only. :-) Aloha, Bob On Sun, Nov 4, 2012 at 11:16 AM, Jay in Tel Aviv jayin...@gmail.com wrote: I have been fairly active on this list since I got my Sam last summer. Once in a while, though, I have experienced something which to be seems very strange and a bit insulting. A few times people have refused to complete a transaction with me when they find out I live overseas. Re: [RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
I've had little hassle shipping to Canada apart from having to stand in the usual interminable line at the PO; ditto (at least once) to Australia. I make one warning: when you post for sale with price including shipping, ***be sure to specify if this is CONUS only***. I once sold a small item with modest shipping attached to the price only to find out after the money arrived that the buyer was in Canada; the additional cost of shipping (western Canada IIRC) just about wiped out any surplus. For the record, I am willing to ship internationally but for (1) additional shipping and (2) a bit more to add to the hassle of having to stand in line and deal with the PO. You could also use some wooden pieces running underneath the basket to support the wire, though I think this would mostly be necessary if you're transporting something very dense that could bend the wire i.e: shopping bag full of canned goods On Saturday, November 3, 2012 9:43:25 PM UTC-4, Scot Brooks wrote: I have a Nitto M-12 and I'd like to put the big Wald basket on it. [RBW] Re: the precarious balance of rim development
Choosing a rim should involve desired tire width. Since it's a Ram, I'm guessing you'll run a 28mm-ish tire, yeah? That's wide enough that you could run almost any rim, IMO. I'd probably go with something from Velocity. The Synergy has a more traditional profile, though not totally traditional. I like that they're made in the US. My Velocity Dyads have a mini-v, but have been perfect. And I like the way they look. The Sun CR-18 is a budget classic. You could beat on them till the Stouty comes out. A while back, Grant posted an insightful piece regarding the precarious balance of rim development (i.e., 'Light, Strong, and Inexpensive: Pick Two'). He then mentioned rolling out a new ‘Stouty’ rim of which I've been pestering Rick for an ETA for nearly a year now, but he confessed they were waiting as well. Complete speculation on my part, but I presume the delay may have something to do with Velocity moving it's production from Australia to Florida. Given this, I may just go ahead and choose from the current offering of rims (such as the ones below), but wanted to first touch base with this group to gather firsthand builder/rider experiences or possibly learn of other options. I'm also curious of any considerations pertaining to tire mounting/seating issues. Incidentally, I will be running 32 mm tires (Jack Brown Green’s, most likely). [RBW] Re: How's the big basket/small rack combo work out?
Going to give my Acorn handlebar bag a break for the winter and just setup a regular rack on an M12. Only concern is over-filling it weight-wise. Any guesses as to a weight limit for this combo? Thanks! David On Sunday, November 4, 2012 10:01:45 AM UTC-6, Mojo wrote: I do not see any reason the large Wald basket would work just fine on the M-12 rack. That said, the medium basket is just great and has very big overfill capacity when used with a net. I bought a Sackville rack bag and have an Acorn handlebar bag on another bike. But the simplicity of the rack and net get used most often. http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/7832253824/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: 650b Ram with Hetres, update 1
I like the idea of the Dia Compe long reach centerpulls and have a friend converting her Motobecane with those now. She looked into drop brake bolts, too. Filing the slots a teensy bit shouldn't have any ill effects, but made her cringe a bit, so the Tektro 559s she bought got shelved and the Dia Compe have the right reach. I don't think the bike's on the road yet, but should be soon. Daniel -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
