[RBW] Ram 650b with Hetre conversion update 2--test ride, thumbs up!

2012-11-04 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Hi all,

Greg, thanks for your offer on getting a little more reach, and Franklyn, I
took your advice and used V-brake pads, which are skinnier (but longer),
and that was enough to get the Tektro 559 to work! What a great group with
great advice! The only minor drawback is that there may not be as much
clearance when the brakes are opened, so I may have to deflate the tires to
make it through the calipers...

OK, so the test ride, wow is all I have to say!

Within 10 feet of riding the Ram with Hetres, I knew I had a keeper. The
bike feels so stable. It inspires tremendous confidence. The Tektro brake
pads, though, lousy. I swapped back to the kool-stop salmon I used
previously--much better!

I had no issues with the BB height. I did a curvy descent (Shepherd Canyon
for the locals). The bike was so stable and the traction felt so good, that
I was extremely confident in my descent. The bike felt fast, and the tires
were so stable. I'll take some pics tomorrow to show the tire clearance and
my current setup (although I plan to add a front rack and fenders soon.)

My feeling is that the conversion is a huge success. I would highly
recommend it for others who may be wondering.

Toshi (in Oakland, CA)

Re: [RBW] Re: Anybody try a 650b Ram with Hetres?

2012-11-04 Thread IanA
I'm wondering now if there is a way to convert a canti frame/fork designed
for 700c? Without moving canti studs or creating a method of mounting the
canti's lower with some sort of Frankenstein's bolt on arrangement I guess
it's not feasible? Probably not necessary as most 700c canti frames offer
enough clearance for reasonably wide tires, but this thread got me
wondering.

exterior flap is more than enough. Which makes access a little easier and

I just rode 10 miles home with my Sackville med stuffed; I was surprised
at how little contact it made compared to a Nelson or Camper.

 ** **

I was disappointed in the several Bagmans -- Bagmen? -- that I used. They
look nice but seemed too flimsy for much weight. Note that I've not used
the newer model which, from the photo, is ugly and is complicated by struts
running to the seat stays. If you are going to have struts, I say, make
 them rack struts.

 ** **

I preferred the SQR, of which I also used several, but it also is limited
to 22 lb and, for me anyway, holds the bag too high and back. Its clamp
screw will dig into your seatpost unless you put something between it and
 the post.

 ** **

IMO, the Nitto Grip is best, if you have a Brooks saddle and for some
reason don't want to use your Brooks's loops; add a minimal rack or sturdy
fender if you lack clearance. IMO, the ideal, not-of-this-world setup would
be a Flite with sturdy loops holding a large bag supported underneath by a
custom platform integral with the fender. Just dreamin'. But with my 559
wheeled Riv, the Sackville M works fine sans bottom support.

 ** **

FWIW, I was disappointed in the admittedly inexpensive seatpost clamped
Velo Orange support -- flexed under a Nelson LF.

 ** **

Lastly, a question: the Sackville Med has an interior flap attached at
the bottom of the bag's mouth. Is this meant to cover the coroplast
stiffener, or is it meant to flip over the load for additional security and
protection before you close the lid? I use it both ways and both make
sense, at least to my little mind. What's up wizzat?

My small frame Ram rides on 559 wheels, and there is not enough clearance
to use a 584. It will accept a 37mm tire though, and that is what is on the
bike. It rides really nicely. I've got 2 other bikes which have been

[RBW] FS: Carradice Camper saddlebag, also a not-so-Rivish crank

Two things I'm trying to unload here:

1-Carradice Camper Longflap saddlebag. Just a few miles on this, it's in
like new condition with the cotton duck still stiff and the leather straps
uncracked. I bought this thinking it would be significantly bigger than my
Super C saddlebag, but it's not, and I much prefer the quick release
buckles on the Super C (though I miss the potential of the longflap)

$75 OBO + shipping.

2- FSA Gossamer crank and bottom bracket, 175mm arms 110 BCD double,
includes bottom bracket and bolts but no rings, $25 OBO + shipping

pictures for both are here:

That said, the medium basket is just great and has very big overfill

Really interesting bike. I really like this frame but the top tube was too
short for me. It has mounts for all sorts of extras. Wheel lock, rear tire
generator, mid for eyelets, eyelets for both fenders and racks. Double
butted chromo. Forged dropouts. Made in Holland supposedly. I'm the 2nd

are competent at setting up metal fenders. I ended up running 28s because I
 am not.
 This is a great bike.

I switched to some hard to set up but nice Shimano vintage ones to these

These were used on 2 camping trips this summer and for a few weeks while

 Tubus Cosmo $150
Same deal: This was used on 2 camping trips this summer for a few weeks
while commuting before I switched to a different setup. This is the best
rack money can buy. I think it's better than the Nitto because it has a
better design. Bags can sit low and back so they ride nice and have plenty
of heal clearance. Silver finish. Works great for tall frames with steep
 seatstays.

 Nitto M-12 $80
New frame doesn't have cantis. Yay! I'll have to mount my Wald basket on
something else. Boo! Like new. Installed once. Bolts included.

105, Mavic Open Sport wheelset $150
Used about a year. Not too many miles on them. Clean/nice. These were
 handbuilt but not by me.

Shimano dura ace bar ends $25
Pretty scuffed up but work great. Not very good photo of them:

 Sugino Triple XD2? $75
I believe it came original on a the Ram.

 Rivindell Roughy Toughies $50
I wish I knew the exact miles but they are no more than a few months old
and not very many miles. New bike came with 32mm paselas and I'm going to
stick with them. This is the best 28mm tire Iv'e tried. Love the smooth
 tread pattern.

2007 Shimano 8 speed XT long cage derailer $35
In nice shape. The all silver version. Another terrible pic:

64cm 1989 Giant of Holland Touring Frameset $200
Really interesting bike. I really like this frame but the top tube was too
short for me. It has mounts for all sorts of extras. Wheel lock, rear tire
generator, mid for eyelets, eyelets for both fenders and racks. Double
butted chromo. Forged dropouts. Made in Holland supposedly. I'm the 2nd
owner. Fits 33s and metal fenders just fine but only if you
are competent at setting up metal fenders. I ended up running 28s because I
 am not.
 This is a great bike.
 Included:
 Generator
 Wheel lock
 Seat post
Less than a year old bottom bracket - shimano, sealed
 original headset

Origin 8 Ultimate Canti brakes. $50
I switched to some hard to set up but nice Shimano vintage ones to these
and couldn't be happier. I got compliments on them all the time. Paid $80.
 Less than a year old.
 It's these:
 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41WqZFOCcAL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Deore Vintage Cantis, new salmon kool stops: $15
Came with my bike. I could never set these up very well.

enough clearance for reasonably wide tires, but this thread got me
 wondering.

I'd pondered something similar awhile back, regarding Atlanti... the 26
ones can be upped to a 650b w/ Hetres, since they have clearance, if you
use an adjustable v-brake like the Paul Motolites. For any 26
cantilever-braked bicycle, if it has clearance, such should work.

Going the other way, from a 700c to a 650b, works for caliper-braked bikes,
with longer calipers (ala Tektro).

And there's where the simple ways end: to go the other way, to from a 700c
to a 650b on cantis, is going to be moving posts. Conversely, if you had a
26 bike that used calipers, I doubt there'd be room to go up to a 650b,
either.

So, summary: 700c calipers to 650b, drop-dependent; or, 26 cantis to
650b, clearance-dependent.

Re: [RBW] Re: Re; How many Riv owners also stable Bridgestones?

2012-11-04 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Does anyone add suspension stems or seatposts to Rivendells? Long ago,
pre-Rivendell, I used a Softride plus an early (CODA) suspension seatpost
on a conventional mountain bike and found the setup very comfortable on
washboard -- hard, 35 psi 1.95 tires, of course. I hear the Thudbuster is
good. I probably would not bother for my current offroad bike, the Fargo,
but if I ever set up a dedicated mountain bike, I would consider a
suspension stem and good suspension seatpost -- but would not want the
complexity and weight of a fork or rear suspension -- I think.

[RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?

2012-11-04 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I have been fairly active on this list since I got my Sam last summer.
I have participated in discussions, bought and sold a few things
(including my Sam, thanks Forrest) and generally tried to be helpful
when I have something to add. I find the people here generally quite
knowledgable and friendly. It is a good groupvand I'm happy to be part
of it.

Once in a while, though, I have experienced something which to be
seems very strange and a bit insulting. A few times people have
refused to complete a transaction with me when they find out I live
overseas. Shipping costs have not been the issue, it seems more loke a
lack of willingness to trust a random foriegner on the internet.

I just lost a sale on another group in circumstances like those. The
buyer got the answeres he was looking for to his questions and then
balked when he saw thay my email wasn't from the US.

I feel like I'm missing something here.

Jay

I was confused about my derailer for sale. It wasn't xt it was lx. Sorry
for the confusion.

So I have two derailers for sale.

An 2007 LX normal in nice condition and a newer model LX rapid rise which
needs a new bottom pully. Both 8 speed though I guess the newer one would
work 9 speed too.

Sorry for the confusion. The regular all silver LX is $40 shipped and the
rapid rise is $35 shipped.

[RBW] A Bit of Rivendell History

overseas I do. Having shipped something to korea once and had to go through
a million questions and even THEN have to play whack-a-mole with customs on
the other end just to get the goods to the recipient I understand why
someone would want to avoid the mess.

It's not about distrust of YOU it's about dealing with irritating officials.

[RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?

2012-11-04 Thread Matthew J
I don't buy and sell on line as much as I did a few years back. Most of my
dealings were with people in the U.S. and Japan, but I had some successful
transactions with people in Europe, Israel, Mexico and South America. Probably
unfair to paint an entire continent, but I would block Africa from my eBay
listings because of some weird communications that came out of Nigeria (in my
defense, at the time at least eBay only let you block all of Africa and not
individual countries).

The most troublesome international deal I ever did was with an apparently
eccentric person out of Canada. His auction was open to the U.S. so I bid and
won. But then he did not want paypal, a cashiers check, or credit card.
Rather he wanted me to send money via a bank transfer. I took an hour off of
work, did a bunch of paper work, followed up and verified the payment went
through only to have the guy send me a bunch of angry e mails complaining about
some fee HIS bank added on the back end of the transaction.

The transactions with Israel were a walk in the park by comparison.

Re: [RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?

2012-11-04 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I've never had any trouble purchasing from foreign merchants on Ebay, as
long as they are doing business using PayPal. I've gotten cameras from
Russia, lots of stuff from Hong Kong and Taiwan, and a few other odds and
ends.

My real problem isn't dealing the folks in foreign countries, it's all the
folks only willing to ship to CONUS as I live in Hawaii. I've checked on
shipping prices and sometimes it's actually more expensive to ship from the
west coast to the east coast than it is to ship to Hawaii - and, at least
for small items, priority mail one-price boxes are the same everyone in the
US, CONUS or otherwise. I get it with big items but small stuffsigh.

I've often thought of selling a Brooks saddle I don't need (B-68) but
putting non-CONUS only. :-)

There are certainly a number of individual reasons for not wanting to
transact informal business across international boundaries, but I'd say the
biggest reason is that the USA is full of xenophobes. Heck, there are still
plenty of 'Murcans who don't know that Hawaii and New Mexico are states.

I once traded vintage mandolins with an Irish gentleman in China after I
got to know him a bit. China Post and USPS International were both
amazingly efficient. The mandolins reached their destinations intact and
remarkably quickly.

2012-11-04 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've had little hassle shipping to Canada apart from having to stand in the
usual interminable line at the PO; ditto (at least once) to Australia.

I make one warning: when you post for sale with price including shipping,
***be sure to specify if this is CONUS only***. I once sold a small item
with modest shipping attached to the price only to find out after the money
arrived that the buyer was in Canada; the additional cost of shipping
(western Canada IIRC) just about wiped out any surplus.

For the record, I am willing to ship internationally but for (1) additional
shipping and (2) a bit more to add to the hassle of having to stand in line
and deal with the PO.

and won. But then he did not want paypal, a cashiers check, or credit
card. Rather he wanted me to send money via a bank transfer. I took an
hour off of work, did a bunch of paper work, followed up and verified the
payment went through only to have the guy send me a bunch of angry e mails
complaining about some fee HIS bank added on the back end of the
 transaction.

The transactions with Israel were a walk in the park by comparison.

Dude, glad you got to do that ride. Great images. Like practically
every other randonneuring event this year, it happened on a day I was
scheduled to work. I've ridden that route and it's great, much better
than the one they used in years past. I would have loved to have seen
more pictures of that Hillborne.

Any chance you'll be able to do any brevets next spring? I've been
entertaining thoughts of sitting out randonneuring next year but that
probably won't happen...

Let's ride soon.

[RBW] Re: the precarious balance of rim development

2012-11-04 Thread Daniel
Choosing a rim should involve desired tire width. Since it's a Ram, I'm
guessing you'll run a 28mm-ish tire, yeah? That's wide enough that you
could run almost any rim, IMO.

I'd probably go with something from Velocity. The Synergy has a more
traditional profile, though not totally traditional. I like that they're
made in the US.
My Velocity Dyads have a mini-v, but have been perfect. And I like the way
they look.
The Sun CR-18 is a budget classic. You could beat on them till the Stouty
comes out.

Inexpensive: Pick Two'). He then mentioned rolling out a new ‘Stouty’ rim
of which I've been pestering Rick for an ETA for nearly a year now, but he
confessed they were waiting as well. Complete speculation on my part, but
I presume the delay may have something to do with Velocity moving it's
production from Australia to Florida. Given this, I may just go ahead and
choose from the current offering of rims (such as the ones below), but
wanted to first touch base with this group to gather firsthand
builder/rider experiences or possibly learn of other options. I'm
also curious of any considerations pertaining to tire mounting/seating

[RBW] Re: 650b Ram with Hetres, update 1

2012-11-04 Thread Daniel
I like the idea of the Dia Compe long reach centerpulls and have a friend
converting her Motobecane with those now. She looked into drop brake bolts,
too. Filing the slots a teensy bit shouldn't have any ill effects, but made
her cringe a bit, so the Tektro 559s she bought got shelved and the Dia
Compe have the right reach. I don't think the bike's on the road yet, but
should be soon.

Re: [RBW] OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?

2012-11-04 Thread Dave

This pretty much says it all.

It's not about distrust of YOU it's about dealing with irritating

I have participated in discussions, bought and sold a few things

knowledgable and friendly.
