Re: [RBW] Re: V-brake vs canti question

2012-11-13 Thread Seth Vidal
Go with the V-brakes b/c they can be less of an ass pain to setup.

The tektro 520 levers also feel pretty good in my hands. Having said that -
so do the shimano levers.

However, if you really want cantis, spring for the paul cantis - they are
just a nicer brake and less fidgety to setup than the cr720s.

2012-11-13 Thread Jan RBW
I’m planning my new country bike with drop bars and bar end shifters and
I’m considering which brakes I should choose.

The alternatives I’m thinking at the moment are:
- Tektro CR720 cantilevers & Shimano BL-R400 levers
- Avid Single Digit 7 V-brakes & Tektro RL 520 levers

>From reading this thread I guess I should go with the V-brakes because of
the better stopping power?

I’m open to other alternatives too if you want to recommend something.

[RBW] Rivendell Canti LongLow

2012-11-13 Thread IanA
Yesterday, I took delivery of a Rivendell LongLow and it is a beautiful
frame, there is no argument about that. It is the canti version, but,
unless I'm mistaken, the frame has a drilled fork crown and seat stay
bridge for side pull brakes as well. Following Toshi's success, I'm
contemplating a 650b build., however, if I could build with Schwalbe Kojaks
35mm plus fenders, I think I'd be happy to keep it as 700c, just so that I
can access rims and tires locally when I need to. (Currently living in
Alberta, Canada and bike culture is not advanced here).

Does anyone have either a Ram or LongLow set up with fenders and true 35mm
tires? If so, could I trouble you for some measurements at the chainstays
and the forks.

Thanks for any info.

[RBW] Gauging interest in an MB1

2012-11-13 Thread Rambouilleting Utahn
I have a 1987 22" Bridgestone MB1 frame that I picked up on eBay a while
ago that I need to part with I bought it to build up as a around town bike
but now that I have an Atlantis coming my way I won't be needing it.

The frame was freshly painted and never built up before I received it.

I had one of these for years and then once deciding that it was just too
small for me I built it up for my wife as a Rivafied cruiser and she loves
it.

Before I put it up on Craigslist or back on eBay I wanted to offer it her
to anyone who wants a fine old school mountain bike.

I can send pictures if you are interested.

trail is one of the few bits of single track that is legal for bikes.
Most of the single track is off limits to bikes. Some of the trail

Sean took me on a short ride around "Rivendell country". Showed me the "Jay

climbing over ruts and gravel all on a hairpin turn. The story goes that
only Jay was able to ride the turn and the gravel without putting the foot

the rest up.The literal high point of the ride got us bunny hopping over
every little jump that we could ride. One hop before a hairpin turn didn't
end as fantastic as I thought. After making the jump the excess weight on
the tip of the saddle dropped me on the top tube and sent me flying over my

For what its worth. These shoppes may be worth a call:

There is a place in Laytonsville, MD called Just Riding Along Bikes
that sells Soma San Marcii. They may be Riv-ish.
Bike 123.com (Mt. Airy Bike shop and College Park Bikes) sell used Rivs,
Pashley's, and hosted a Just Ride speak with Grant this year.
I think there may be a Velo Orange place in B'more. Look for the location

But I am not familiar with the shops in B'more proper.

[RBW] FS: Salsa Vaya Ti 55cm frame/fork $1450 shipped

2012-11-13 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Admittedly this is not exactly Riv-ish, but I figured I'd offer this to my
friends here before taking it to the broader marketplace. Anyway, the
heading says it all: Salsa Vaya titanium 55cm frame with the stock Salsa
black CrMo fork. Condition is nearly new, very low mileage (guessing 200
miles or less). Made in the USA by Lynskey. The Vaya Ti was recently
discontinued, but the frame MSRP was $2000 when it was new - I'd like $1450
shipped in CONUS, or reasonable offer.

2012-11-13 Thread BSWP
It's very easy to use a stainless "P" clamp (with rubber insert) to hold a
small powerful LED flashlight at a threaded braze-on. I like the lights
from Four Sevens, and you can get a red lens, or a red light, for
rear-facing applications.

SKS fenders, I think would have been easier to get to fit. I think
the people that have been running Jack BRowns under fenders have been
either using the SKS fenders, or have modified the fenders to split at the

 Toshi,

You've inspired me... I've got a package from RBW enroute, new set of
Tektro calipers (and a few other bits). I've switched my Bombadil's tires
out from the Neomotos to my set of Conti Tour-Rides. Once my brakes
arrive, I can swap calipers and borrow the Bombadil's Synergy wheels to
check it out w/ my particular frame. If it goes as well as yours did, my
winter 650b wheelbuilding project will change course, instead of a 2nd set
of heavy-duty wheels for the Bomba, I will return the Synergys to the
 Bomba
and build a road set for the Ram, so I can switch between my 700c and the
 650b...

[RBW] Re: Question about Leslie's Ram

2012-11-13 Thread Leslie
Thx guys!

Jim,

It's one of the last ones, that I obtained through Mountain Sports Ltd in
Bristol; I brought it home as a boxed frame.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/leslie_bright/4320448965/in/photostream/

Braze-ons were on there, didn't have them added. In some of the RR's
that were talking about the Ram as a coming model, it was mentioning a
couple of models of the Long Shen crowns (are still used on some customs).
  I asked Grant about the change from the earlier crowns to the later ones;
he explained that they changed over now having a series of crowns for their
normal models, the last of the Ram's, the Hilsen, the Atlantis, and even
the Bomba... each different sizes/widths, as needed.

A bit ago, we'd started trying to figure out how many of each color were
made, is up on the Cyclofiend page:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/rambouillet/ Mine is the last one on that
list.

Will report back

Re: [RBW] Rear Safety lights that screw into seatstay braze ons.

2012-11-13 Thread Jeremy Till
The normal mounts for Planet Bike rear lights comes apart to attach
different bands for seatstay or seatpost mounting, and as a result you can
just bolt the bracket portion to a convenient braze on. I mounted one to
the upper seatstay mounts on a bike with no rear rack.

[RBW] Question about Leslie's Ram

2012-11-13 Thread James Warren

Leslie, that is a great bike. So it has the Hilsen lugs and the mini-rack
mounts. Was this one of the last Rams they sold, and were those features sold
on more Rams than just yours? Or did you get the mini-rack mounts as a special
add-on?

We had a discussion about rack mounts on the Ram a few months ago, and I could
have sworn that I had seen at least one late model green one that had them for
mini-racks. Great bike. Makes me want to ride right now.

Ram w/ 700x32's under aluminum VO fenders. The rear was fine, but the
front was tight; ended up switching to a 28 up front.

SKS fenders, I think would have been easier to get to fit. I think the
people that have been running Jack BRowns under fenders have been either
using the SKS fenders, or have modified the fenders to split at the brake.

If it goes as well as yours did, my
winter 650b wheelbuilding project will change course, instead of a 2nd set
of heavy-duty wheels for the Bomba, I will return the Synergys to the Bomba
and build a road set for the Ram, so I can switch between my 700c and the
650b...

[RBW] Rivendell-friendly in Baltimore Inner Harbor area?

2012-11-13 Thread Eric Platt
Long shot if it is anyone of this list - but twice now, have seen someone
riding a Salsa Casseroll in blue with the small front rack. Each time, the
bike has had a Rivendell bag up front. Once a tweek Nigel Smythe and one
greenish Sackville.

Are there any good Rivendell influenced shops in the harbor area? I know
of Joe's(?) in Fells Point and noticed a racing influenced shop on the Key
Highway past Federal Hill.

Just wonderin' more than anything.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone mounted taillights to Longboards?

2012-11-13 Thread Eric Platt
The PDW Fenderbot tail light works on a Longboard fender. And also on the
Planet Bike fenders. Have in the past used them on the now departed Sam
Hillborne and departed Fargo. Probably will set one up for the SimpleOne
next year, as the battery tail light on that bike is on the Nitto rear rack.

Did quite a bit of road and gravel road riding on those bikes with the tail
light attached and there was no undue rattling or bouncing. The PDW light
is very light.

Re: [RBW] Re: strange happenings

2012-11-13 Thread Eric Platt
Am in agreement with Jim on this. A number of years ago, rode my
long-departed Atlantis in a early season rain/late season snow ride. About
60 miles. Ended up with three flat tires. And of course, only two spare
tubes. Rode the last couple of miles on a flat tire. Sadly, my progress
was so slow otherwise, it didn't make that much of a difference. (FWIW,
the tire was a 26" 50mm Big Apple)

(Also reminds me of my dream bike - a 61cm Atlantis designed for 26"

2012-11-13 Thread PATRICK MOORE
How do you keep the blinkie aimed properly? When I attach them to a bag,
tey end up pointed downward and in effect lose half of their intensity.
I've resorted to a strobe on the Fargo which, not using LED technology,
does not have to be carefully aimed. But strobes use batteries up much more
quickly.

If I could find a way to keep blinkies properly aimed, the straps would
solve a lot of problems.

[RBW] Re: Anyone mounted taillights to Longboards?

2012-11-13 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I wouldn't.

I'm having enough trouble getting my Longboards to stay where I want
them, but that is probably because I have to stand the bike on end,
i.e. on the rear fender, to get it up and down the elevator in my
building. Which would make that spot not work for a light anyway.

I use a blinky clipped to my saddle bag.

[RBW] Re: strange happenings

2012-11-13 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have hypotheses about this:

1. Rain washes debris into the traffic lane, which makes it available for
tires to run over.
2. The water acts as a lubricant to facilitate penetration. It may also
serve as an adhesive to stick the debris to the tire tread.
3. Any debris that is embedded in the rubber may be repeatedly pressurized
as the weight on the tire squeezes water into the hole, forcing the debris
to penetrate deeper.
