[RBW] Re: Riding in Marin

2012-12-26 Thread Hetchins52
You might want to do some gorgeous road miles by getting on Panoramic
Highway and climbing up to Pantol Ranger Station then climbing some more
and follow the ridge line (Ridgecrest) and then Bolinas-Fairfax Rd. down to
Alpine Lake. From there, climb up toward Pine Mountain and descend into
Fairfax. You can experience some more Marin ambience at the Fairfax coffee
shops and eateries.
Wander back through Ross, Corte Madera and Mill Valley. You can take fire
roads back to the Headlands.
This may take some help from passing cyclists but most would be happy to
lead you if they are going the same direction.
Western Marin County is a wonderland for biking!

If you were wondering if this happened:
http://flic.kr/s/aHsjDmNiB3

It did. Ended up getting to the wrong place after missing the Bart train.
Started at North Berkeley patching up a flat. Good amount of climbing. Mud
wasn't sticking and the sun came out. Greg, Gordon and I ended at Sibley
staging area and met up with Ted who was planning on going to the ride but
because of the morning circumstances ended up riding ahead. We caught up
very surprisingly so our three turned to four. Good stuff. Stuck to the
route mentioned. Only got to do this in sections glad to do it right from
North to south. Good group, nice day what more do you ask for?

[RBW] Re: How waterproof are the Sackvilles?

2012-12-26 Thread Greg
I've never had water enter the main compartment of my large Saddlesack,
which has seen some rainy multi-day tours in Va./W. Va./ MD.. Nonetheless,
I use trash compactor bags or mega-size Ziplocks as liners.
I have had rain water enter the two front zippered pockets and even the
leather flapped side pockets. Putting all you stuff carried in these two
locations in Ziplocks is prudent.
The great advantage of a canvas bag for bicycle touring is the same as a
Duluth Pack for canoe tripping.
Breathability. Even if the interior of the bag gets wet it will dry out,
evaporate. You don't get that with waterproof-coating bags. The exterior
may dry fast but any water that gets inside stays there till you drain it
out and mop the inside.
For the same reason I prefer Egyptian hemp cotton decks on Klepper kayaks
for touring to any waterproof nylon ones.

[RBW] Re: How waterproof are the Sackvilles?

2012-12-26 Thread grant
The Scottish fabric is the tightest and most light-and-airproof of any I've
seen or used, and as far as I know is not available in the US. Carradice,
I think, gets its fabric from the same Scottish maker. Or at least *has*.
The waterproofness is one thing, and a big one, but as KS says and does,
stuff your dead-if-wet stuff in plastic or nylon bags. Or get vinyl bags,
like Ortliebs.
Waterproofness aside and on a more practical, everyday note, the tightness
and dryness of the Sackvilles means they don't accumulate dirt like both
looser and oilier bags do. I don't say the bags are perfect, but they are
as good as they can be, and as good as I've seen. Good enough, for sure.

I doubt you'll have to worry about chasing bottom bracket threads.
Framesaver is good
Check the derailiuer hanger .. Not a must but can sabe time later

Then have a blast .. I usually hang the bike from an old seat post till I've
put the first scratch on it then go. Ack to clamping top tube seat tube etc as
mood suits me. Hmmm maybe that is one of the reasons my bikes get so scared,
my lack of gentle handling. :)

Have fun and post photos

In my experience, the saddlesack bags (medium and large) will keep your
gear dry. The canvas is fairly thick and tightly woven, and the main flap
provides lots of coverage, almost like a raincape over your stuff.

Re: [RBW] Happy Holidays! Any Surprise Bike Treasures?

2012-12-26 Thread numbnuts
Hey All,
My first MTB was a mid 80s lugged stumpy (the orange one). I rode it for
over twenty years before a frame builder friend told me that the stress
waves in the top and down tube were serious enough that I should retire the
frame. So I did, and bought a Ritchey (which my wife uses as her uppity
townie - if there can be such a thing - more on that later). At any rate, I
have been looking for another ever since and finally grabbed one off of the
local CL. It's a lil rough, but serviceable, and will be my new workhorse
(shopper, pull a trailer) townie. It will replace a mid 90s steel
Rockhopper I bought years ago, also off the local CL.

And about the Ritchey. When my wife and I became engaged I offered her in
lieu of a ring any bike she wanted (we meet on a group ride). She
responded, 'I'll take the Ritchey, and a ring'. So it really is hers
because she did indeed marry me. She is a shrewd one that gal.

Smooth Tracks,
Chris
Redding, Ca.

[RBW] New Year's Day ride up Mt Diablo

2012-12-26 Thread Jim M.
I thought I'd start a thread for this ride, which was mentioned in another
thread. The plan is to meet at Pleasant Hill BART at 9:30 am: *
http://tinyurl.com/bvt86we*

It looks like the trails will be able to dry out a bit before then. There
should be enough locals on this ride to take different routes to the top
and back again.

I guess I wouldn't bother with studs for recreational riding if I lived in
Boulder. If, on the other hand, I was riding for transportation, and couldn't
pick and choose weather conditions, then the studs make more sense.

Re: [RBW] Happy Holidays! Any Surprise Bike Treasures?

2012-12-26 Thread Scott Henry
I ended up with a new Eddie Bauer First Ascent messenger bag. It looks
great and seems to be comfortable though I haven't ridden with it yet (work
and the great midwest blizzard).

My TimBuk2 bag was still functional, but all of the velcro was loosing its
grip. I cant wait to give the EB a try.

Advice - don't take shelter under a tree. Lightening strikes trees
frequently. That's how golfers get kill on a golf course. It happens.

2012-12-26 Thread Noah Deuce
Jim,

Looks like I'll have to add some studs to my tire collection. The thing about
Boulder is the snow/ice usually melts within a day or two, so that makes for a
lot of wrestling tires on and off.

Glad to see you're enjoying Marin!
